Good synopsis. I agree but would add that when he first found himself in the 70s, it was as alien to him as a person from the 70s ending up in the 40s, and all that brings with it. By the end though he obviously longed for those times and those people back again . When he is on the roof I imagine (only my opinion) Him thinking that Annie and Gene and Ray and Chris etc are now long gone (either dead or grown old) and he didn't want to be in a World without them
That end shot rotating as the car drives off and ends with Testcard Girl and Bubbles is amazing, all the best shows came from Kudos productions at that time. Real Cinematic stuff!
This scene is an absolute masterpiece. The use of changes moving into the music for the kiss as Sam decides to stay in 1973 , moving into Gene screeching up in the Cortina as he tells them all to get in . The way sam hears the last seconds of his present day life on the radio as he tunes that out back to life on Mars. They drive out of the scene into the 1970s and the test card girl points us towards Ashes to Ashes.
@@EugeneOneguine The test card girl was the last thing that was broadcast last thing at night before people switched off. For me it's like when the TV is switched on again it's a new day where Sam lives his life in the 70s
Better for it to go out on a high with a complete story than get dragged out, drop in quality and then end unresolved when the network cancels it due to low ratings.
A great ending . When the little girl (death, I presume) turns the invisible TV Off I assume Sam's life support is being switched off in his own Time . And putting Life on Mars on the radio at the end, as it was near the beginning, was a great touch .
No. It was a middle ground, but none of them knew they were dead until the last episode of Ashes to Ashes. Gene had forgotten he was basically the Ferry Man .. He was supposed to lead them to the light, so to speak . Instead he created his own World and slowly forgot this.
After years I get what the lil girl at the end is about .... she is the girl from the test card from the 60s/70s even carrying the clown heh well done .

Sam killed himself because he wanted to go back to the world he'd been experiencing, even if only for a short while. That's why he turns off the radio - he knows what he's done but wants to enjoy his coma "life" for as long as he can. That was the original concept - but then, of course, Ashes to Ashes made it more complicated. :)

Annie is one of my favourite female characters from any show; she’s so sweet, kind and gentle.
