  • Drawing curves in perspective is not as difficult as at first appears.
    This video explains a simple and systematic way of understanding how perspective affects various round structures used in architecture.

    That part at the end, where the ceiling circles and the arches have different effects as they go nearer or farther, was really helpful to me. Thank you.

    Oh wow this video is really insightful! Never noticed that a curve/circle would look more lines/elipses like when viewed from low angle vertical axis. Many thanks, sir!

    For the perspective squares a tip to find the middle of edges is to use diagonals as they cross each other in the center of the square. I guess it’s to get accurate

      Thanks. Yes, that's a very helpful tip. I use it for ceilings when I want to find a centre point for a vertical tip of a pyramid roof etc. I will include it in a future video Appreciate your input. :0

    I think one important aspect not mentioned here is that the arches are tangent to the quadrilateral used to construct them.

    Ok, I get how to draw the 2D arch in perspective. (Thank you) Now how do I make that a 3D arch? Is the other side of the wall that I see through the arch the exact same curve, just shifted over?

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  Год назад +1

      If you think of each side of the arch going back to the same vanishing point, you’ll understand therefore that the sides of the further end of the arch are slightly closer together than the sides at the closer end of the arch. This does make the two arches a tiny bit different. Because the further back arch is angled slightly more towards us than the front arch. But in practice you could almost always regard them as the same without any harm.

    Are you sure that a circle or an ellipse describing an arch in perspective isn't symmetrical along both the vertical and horizontal axes? Seems like it should be. The highest visible point of the circle or ellipse isn't the highest point of the arch above the ground of course. It is slightly closer to the viewer due to the viewer's upward vantage point, and equidistant from the two widest parts of the circle or ellipse. Or so it would seem.

    Hi Stephen. Would it be too much to ask if you could do a video drawing these circles in perspective on the roof as shown in the photo? I’m hearing what you say and I can master the other lessons here but attempting the circles/ellipses isn’t working. I feel I need it shown to me. Thank you.

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  Год назад

      I’m not sure I can Abi, because I would draw them freehand, using my theoretical understanding to guide me in a general way. I would not plot them in detail. I’m a street sketcher at heart, not an architect. I would look for the patterns, such as the ellipses getting narrower as they move back, and at how what we see also changes as the relative position of the inset section changes in relation to the surface of the ceiling as they get farther away. But then I would draw it freehand. Sorry if that doesn’t help. And it is a complex structure to draw, that I didn’t expect to happen from the video. I thought it illustrated a few examples of how ellipses worked in perspective well. 😀

      here are two channels with playlists that cover ellipses in perspective. Another one is Drawsh Studio which has more condensed versions, which I also recommend.
