- I took N. K. Jemisin’s Masterclass on writing fantasy and science fiction! Jemisin has been praised as "the most celebrated science fiction and fantasy writer of her generation" by the New York Times. Let's talk about my thoughts and review on what she says about worldbuilding, traditional publishing, and marginalized characters!

I really like the fact that she acknowledges not writing everyday when she's tired, stress or not in a good space. Self care is important
Self care is so important!
There’s a time for self care and a time for doing it anyway
I want to take half of the Master Class writing classes
They certainly do have some cool ones!
This sounds like a great Masterclass, particularly for someone like me, who knows little about fantasy or science fiction. What Jemisin says about the story idea not being a "contract" definitely resonates with me, as I often have difficulty adjusting my ideas to new inspiration. I have been thinking about traditional publishing recently for my nonfiction, so that segment would definitely interest me all the same. Great video!
What a coincidence! I recently got Masterclass, and NK Jemisin's one is a class that I am intrigued by. Can't wait to hear your thoughts. My fantasy story is not my main project, but I'll be writing it in the future and might want to listen to that class.
That’s awesome! I’d love to hear what you think after you take it!
I just took this class! I absolutely love NK Jemisin and could listen to her talk for hours! I got some really good tips from that class and think I will be watching it several times!
That's awesome!! I agree, I could definitely see rewatching some of the lessons!
you have a new subscriber for this. you said so many things i thought about and agreed with and felt as i was going through this masterclass too.
including the fact that i have never gone through AN ENTIRE COURSE IN ONE DAY, the way i did with miss Nora's work :)
and that includes Neil Gaiman :o
Awesome video, you really encouraged me to take this master class!! I really want to read NK jemisin!! She has been on my radar for a long time!!
I hope you enjoy it!!
This was fascinating! I've been considering joining Masterclass or something similar, but this one is also up my alley. It was great hearing your thoughts, definitely think I'll have to add this to my list to do!
I'd love to hear your thoughts after you finish it!
I came across your channel about a month ago and I just find your joy of writing so infectious. I loved this video! I hope the editing is going well!
Aw thank you so much!!
I've been thinking about a subscribing to the MasterClass. Now may just be the time to do it. Thanks for another great video.
Thanks for watching!!
I don't think you understand how happy I am to see this video lol, I just lost my masterclass subscription (lets not talk about how I was piggybacking off of one of my teachers lol) but THANK YOU SO MUCHHHH
Aw thank you!!
Thanks. You gave a well considered and well organized review which should be helpful to everyone.
Thank you!
So glad you made these. Ill need to take this course now.
Thanks for watching!
These videos are pretty interesting. I don't plan to take any of these classes, but it's nice to see what they talk about
Totally fair! I just like sharing what I'm learning
@@SaraLubratt appreciated 🙌🏻
I was just about to start this MC when your video showed up! Great overview.
That's awesome!! Hope you enjoy it!
Thanks so much for this video! I've recently been looking into Masterclass (don't have it sadly) I think you should check out Chriss Voss (I bought his book), Dan Brown and some other Masterclass tutors
I read Chris Voss’s book and freaking loved it!! I have started a few other masterclasses and didn’t like them as much but this one really got me back into it so I’ll have to check them out!
I definitely want to take some Master Classes in the future. This one has caught my eye. 🙂
I hope you enjoy it!
I bet I will. :D
This seems like a really extensive masterclass. are masterclass classes usually like this?
They seem to be!
Would you ever consider sharing sneak peaks of your book you're writing and doing a video, analyzing your writing in a deep level. How you wrote your characters? Villains? Heroes? Plot? Etc
I like that idea! Not sure how I could do that well but I will think about it :)
I just signed up for masterclass over the weekend cause I thought doing something like this would be cool. haha, i Look forward to watching hers since it is on Fantasy.
That's awesome!!
I didn't know NK Jemisin has a Masterclass. It must new, just this year since I often for any writing classes.
You read one nonfiction book, right? You might want to try Malcolm Gladwell's Teaches Writing. If you think of dabbling and experimenting non-fiction.
It came out only a few days before I posted this video! I do read nonfiction books occasionally, I'll have to look into that one, thanks for the suggestion!
I'm starting to write a historical fantasy and researching history. Would you recommend her class?
This was so interesting! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Will this Master Class be beneficial to someone who doesn't write fantasy or not interested in writing a fantasy novel?
Another question...
Do you have any other Master Class about writing that you would recommend?
Thank you :)
It has benefits for all writers but it is definitely targeted at science fiction and fantasy writers with the world building. I'm still looking into other writing masterclasses but I've definitely enjoyed this one the most so far
This has nothing to do with anything but I never understood being "just" a fantasy and sci fi writer. I'm just a writer. I write everything. Don't you (looking at all of you)?
I totally understand having preferences but I agree that a writer is a writer :)
Would you recommend it for beginners?
If you have Masterclass, yes! I enjoyed how she talked about worldbuilding as the start of a novel idea so I could see it being very helpful for beginners!
Writing is going well this month. Less than 10,000 from end.
Nice!
I know this has nothing to do with your video but you are so pretty 😩
Thank you!
You spend so much time in world building, who has time to cut the grass :-)
😂
If only i could afford it......
I think that they yearly subscription is far more reasonable than the class to class model but if you can't, it's no big deal! That's why I wanted to review it. I don't think the class is worth $90 but because I have the yearly subscription I'm enjoyed it.
@@SaraLubratt can i ask you a question?
@@Elia-fn8jv What's up?
@@SaraLubratt its a very specific question, but i am writing a story very similar to Lord of the rings but like you said i dont want to fall in the cliché of copying what other people have done,so i have some difficulty making different my dark lord and my protagonist....do you have any ideas?
(Its an annoying question so i would completely understand if you didnt have any answers for me)
That’s a good question. A little hard for me to answer knowing very little else. I’d say just work on character motivation, attitude, and goals unique and you can take inspiration from fantasy but try not to copy. That’s super general but hope it helps :)
It’s clear you got so much out of this class and really admire Jemison! A head’s up - the term “articulate” is often seen as a microaggression when used to describe People of Color.
Oh my god I did not know that. I use that word a lot, I didn't know it could be seen as a microaggression
I wanna do this but 4 hours seems like such a long time.
It wasn’t that bad! You could totally skip around and just look at the lessons that interest you or spread it out over however long you need :)
Hey Sara, good morning! I have not watched your video yet, that will be a reward for writing well done, but I had a video idea a few days ago and had typed it out, do consider it.
Hey Sara! I got a video idea which I think you should consider doing. Now that you have completed Draft 3 of project DE, I think it will be a good idea to plot the story again. I mean like how you plotted in your JK Rowling video but only the first book, filling all the boxes based on the 3rd draft now that you know what happens. I personally think it will be amusing to observe how much the plot has changed; how many additional chapters appeared, how many chapters disappeared, how much of the plot was supposed to extend two chapters but was compressed in one and how many chapters split in two. I have not completed even one draft and am not a pantser, yet how much the plot has changed surprised me. Within three drafts and pantsering (is that a word?) I think you have will have a blast doing that. Just an idea, it is totally your wish though.
Thank you.
Thank you so much for the suggestion!!!

Congratulations!
You have 1 dislike.
That’s a part of creating any kind of content 🤷🏼♀️
She's perfect for new writers today, because she teaches you to write exactly what all publishers will only allow to be published. The secret is that you have to make sure the characters aren't white, straight, cisgender and male. Don't do it! You will fail!!! And don't be those things, because again, YOU WILL BE DENIED!!! Thank you for attending this masterclass.
😂😂😂
@@SaraLubratt why did you like this antagonistic comment?
