This dude is so humble and down to Earth. I saw this video some months ago and I thought he was some dude who swam in the Olympic games but didn't perform outstandingly. I learned today that he is the person who holds the most world records in swimming. How can you be so good at your sport and so humble? Absolutely amazing
That was me this summer after not being in the pool for two years. I also forgot that we do long course in the summer, and this was at a college pool, so the whole time I’m trying not to drown or wear myself out. Embarrassing and frustrating because I can’t get the full effects of the workout. Totally different feeling when they put the bulkhead in that one time.
Finally! So glad someone brought up how visibility underwater without goggles is very low. Obviously, these are movies, but I always wondered how people in movies were supposed to be able to have 20/20 vision while underwater w/ no goggles.
You can only get so far with actors playing actual professionals. Those people mostly swim for fun at the beach or pool, if they swim at all. That's just movies, go with it.
Actually, as a swimmer and coach, I was impressed with the swimming in several of these. They were clearly using real competitive swimmers, though not necessarily of the same caliber they were portraying. Sort of a limited pool for actors who also swam competitively in high school or college and look the part. I wish they'd do that kind of thing more often, like in the first example, that WAS terrible. And I'm a horrified that they kept that scene with the kid where the edit was clearly to cover up someone rescuing him.

It's interesting that he mentioned college, because I was in the swimming team with him in college. Do you know when some athletes say that they knew they had the potential to make it because even though they were competing against people in their category, they stood out? That's the realization I had while observing the rest of the guys I swam against. This dude here was absolute INSANITY. I used to swim because I liked it, but didn't have the drive nor the objective to make it further, but he wouldn't let anyone get to him. Even when we used to train indoors to practice our timing, we weren't really a challenge for him.
As a triathlete that was a competitive swimmer, yes, open water swimming is sooooo different than pool swimming. This year I’ve only trained in open water for races, as pool swimming doesn’t translate as well. So much better if I can simply train in open water.

The dive in Pride is actually pretty accurate to how they dove in the 70s, which is the setting of the movie. The flip turn looks pretty awful, even for the 70s. I was hoping they would include the Angels and Demons clip with Tom Hanks swimming again. Tom Hanks did pretty well swimming in that movie.

For the scene in castaway, you have to remember that he was physically and mentally drained for so long so as close as Wilson appeared, to tom hanks he probably looked miles away and didn’t want to drown or lose his raft.
I'm a former competitive swimmer. I have never seen good swimming technique in any movie. If you're a competitive swimmer, you can spot bad technique instantly. Most people have no idea what actual good swimming looks like so the films just don't worry about it. But it matters, dammit! 😂 Also, Caeleb Dressel is hardly just "an Olympic swimmer". He's probably been the best swimmer in the world for the past 5-10 years. He is INCREDIBLE.

I'm a former competitive swimmer. I have never seen good swimming technique in any movie. If you're a competitive swimmer, you can spot bad technique instantly. Most people have no idea what actual good swimming looks like so the films just don't worry about it. But it matters, dammit! 😂
Also, Caeleb Dressel is hardly just "an Olympic swimmer". He's probably been the best swimmer in the world for the past 5-10 years. He is INCREDIBLE.
Amazing how many Olympic swimmers have a fear of water or drowning. Caeleb and Adam Peaty both have it, and they’re the best ever at their event.
