This is actually such an accurate introspection on what we love to use and is such a good exercise to start understanding what works for your complexion and what products you should buy and keep in your makeup kit! I've stopped buying by impulse and reduced my overconsumption in makeup overall!
I wish I had known how long it takes to use up a makeup product. Influencers rarely talk about this, if at all. We definitely don’t need to be buying things as often as we think!
I’ve been auditing my makeup (without even realising it lol) since I started working 40 hours a week back in April. With limited time in the mornings and to be creative I really took a long hard look to find the pieces that worked hard for my new lifestyle. And boy have I cut down spending on MU and now just repurchase repeats. Thank god😅
I recently developed eyelid dermatitis BAD and had to declutter pretty much everything but Clinique and Tarte. It was crazy emotional. You’re right. Makeup is emotional and a part of our self identity. ❤❤❤
8:20 Also it is good to think what you reach for depending on the season. I have decluttered some powder products during winter thinking I don't like them but I actually prefer them alot more during summer and I had to buy them again. In the winter my skin is drier and in the summer bit oilier or just sweatier so the products work bit differently on my skin.
Exactly did the same ! I almost dont use any powder in winter since I have dry skin, so I keep them aside for summer or special occasions. I still use them half the year so I just keep one pressed and one loose
It takes a while to understand what you really want. After being influenced to buy more than you need with your hard earned money, i hesitate to throw or gift away. I gift products that don’t work for my skin type. I’ll use everything else until it’s gone and then only purchase my favourites to replace. I feel joy with an empty and I’m slowly getting through my stash🤗 And of course it’s a year of no buys for me to be able to do this. Living and learning…
Great, much needed video. I'm 67 and have really toned everything down to the minimum. This audit really helped with my decluttering process. The part of the video where you're filming with the windows behind you, YOUR NATURAL BEAUTY came shining through the screen!!!!!!!! And your hair!!!!!😍
I do two makeup audits a year: Oct and Jan. October, I review how my makeup worked for me and what I need to purchase for the new year. For example, I only needed to replace/repurchase my favourite blush palette and my favourite concealer. I had enough unopened mascaras for the new year and need to finish my favourite products in the other areas. In January, I made sure I purchased and received the products. And January, I review techniques to best use my favorite products. Thank you for helping me complete my January audit, and I am having fun learning how to apply products with a lighter hand. Happy New Year!
I just did a lot of declutters before clicking on this video. I saw a lot of makeup, skincare and fragrance samples in my travel bag that I don't remember I got them how long ago. Usually, I use those samples on my trip in case of it's not convenient to bring full-sizes on the flight. Some of them did end up finished on the trip, while some of them not.
This was great video and helped me to really ask those questions on my makeup. I will have to say that my makeup routine has become minimalist to five products. I have some ride or die products that I am always repurchasing. I will be doing a low or no buy starting in February for the year. ❤
I love this, Amanda! Going to check your website next! I love the woo-woo stuff about approaching with compassion. I have a large collection and I often feel shame when trying to tackle it (the waste of unused/unwanted products, the guilt over the money spent, etc.). The compassion and curiosity allows me to bypass those hang-ups as well as insecurities I discover I have--consciously or otherwise--as I analyze and audit my collection. Thank you so much!!❤❤❤
Oh my gosh, I LOVE this and have so many thoughts. I’ve been keeping an inventory of my makeup for a few years using an app called Sortly. It makes shopping so much easier and I sometimes even use it to track when I purchased or opened items. I’ve never actually done an audit per se, but I definitely want to now and love the questions you pose while taking us through this!
Incredibly useful! Thanks so much for taking the time to give this to us. I know I'm going to see it mentioned by others because it's a critical process none of us are doing.
This feels fresh and inspiring. Thank you ❤ I know I can approach my makeup bag more mindfully. I also want to make a small matte eyeshadow palette. I will probably include a few blush and bronzers for my eye looks. I have some singles that I know will work well for me. I’m looking for an empty palette without a mirror.
The same steps can be apllied succesfully to organize your closet or kitchen supplies. Without being objective and spending some time to think about some purchases we will be stuck in pointless buying and decluttering cycle.
18:10 concealers have so much nuance for me. At the moment I have 4 different concealers (1 of which was a drugstore purchase that left me so unsatisfied that it brought me to go to Sephora for the first time. I can make it work but I’m just trying to use it up) but I am kinda okay with having them because apparently my face’s blemish game is too much for any one formula or even colour to tackle 😂 Natasha Denona N9 - the shade I wanted was out of stock but I decided to go for this one because it was pretty close and I wanted to try a concealer that was slightly colour-correcting on me because my undereyes are THAT bad. Attempts at layering colour corrector and concealer doesn’t work out and my textured skin just doesn’t take kindly to having a lot of product there. Great for full-beat makeup, too obvious for no foundation days, a little awkward as a spot corrector but still workable because my very dark acne scars can benefit a bit from the slight orange tinge. Tower 28 6.0 IE - only thing I want for minimal makeup days (especially if I have to wear a mask), extremely forgiving formula that provides a base that lets me not look like a zombie when my health is going Through It and it shows. Might switch to another more olive shade because this is looking kinda peachy on me sometimes, but it’s usually not obvious when I don’t use foundation. Doesn’t set very well so I normally avoid using it when I’m going full beat. Hourglass Fawn - formula is AWFUL for my undereyes, I find it too drying and even for spot concealing I feel a tightness in the places that I apply it on. But it is FULL coverage and actually matches my foundation. Might be stubborn to blend out but if I really need to look good despite discomfort then I can put up with this for spot concealing. Each of these address very different areas so I don’t know if I could even downsize this but with Tower 28 acting as an everyday foundation for me and ND and Hourglass excelling at opposite but much needed areas for full glam looks, I think I can accept it. The only thing I could probably change is just buying another ND concealer in a shade matching my Hourglass but I will still have two separate concealers for spot concealing and undereyes 😂 I have a setting powder that turns out to darken my undereyes so I’ve repurposed it to a powder foundation. This has set my base products that I want to keep at 5 (3 concealers, 1 really nice foundation, 1 “powder foundation”) and tbh I’ve already told myself that getting any more base products in 2025 is redundant it’s just really hard resisting the call for stick foundations because a lot of people are singing praises for some right now. I just can’t justify the purchase when I really want to use up the flunks I bought for this category before they expire.
I'm also on a low-buy plan for 2025. I won't buy any new products unless I'm lacking something in my collection. The big jar of Eucerin or Cetaphile or CeraVe cream is what I'm currently using since I saw the 50ml jar costs almost the same price and normally, creams in that amount go away within 2-3 months if using every day. Their shelf life is normally up to a year so I'm not worrying the big jar expires.
I got that novo eyeshadow per how it looked in your last k beauty video and it’s so so pretty, I’ve been loving it!! I ordered another shade as well, that looked interesting, and it was super dried out and crumbly, but it was less than $4 so it didn’t make sense to try and return it
Very helpful video. I realized that I have a fantasy self . I buy makeup for my “Carrie” self but I’m more “Miranda “ in reality. ( yes I still watch Sex in the City 😂)
Thank you so much for sharing I went to your website and saved to my favorites right away. I love your content so much and this makes me think even more highly of you. You are becoming one of my favorite people on RUclips. I am definitely going to follow along with each course. I have decided to go on a no buy for 6 months. Which I feel like will get me to use what I have more so I can get to know those products more And this is a good way to know myself better. Thank you so much!
Where is your black makeup Bag from?! I love it! And thank you for the helpful video, I need to do this more often in my collection. Feeling very overwhelmed by the overflow of products I own and unlimited choices I have, it’s almost paralyzing . I need to slow down with my makeup purchasing . I think everything I currently have I love, so why keep buying more .
This is really beautifully said and done, Amanda. Thank you, i feel less alone w/ the intention example you gave, and with...well, everything in this video, really. xoxo
idk if it's too late for me comment this for you to see, but PLEASE DO NOT TRY ANYTHING ELSE FROM NOVO!!! I AM BEGGING YOU. novo is one of the most dodgy brands out there, it's well known for copying the packaging and component 1:1 to other popular products on the market, its safety is also not guaranteed as it's really cheaply made and lots of people have had infections from the product in the past. other brands like this to also watch out for includes herorange, sweet mint, cappuvini, hold live and maffick.
Hi Amanda - FYI regarding that beautiful Novo eyeshadow, please be cautious since I did find a link online stating that the FDA (in the Philippines) has not approved this makeup and in fact cautions against using it due to some potentially dubious ingredients. I had attempted to embed that link here, but apparently RUclips didn’t like that. I had never even heard of the brand prior to seeing this video, and while I agree with you that the color and formulation do look enticing, I’m nevertheless hearing my mother’s voice in my head telling me “You only get one pair of eyes, dear, so take good care of them.” I’d hate to see you put your own beautiful eyes at risk on potentially risky products. Thanks for all you do!

Agree 💯%. I no longer listen to people who push buy, buy, buy.
This is the smartest and most helpful video I’ve seen in a long time. Thank you!

One of my goals for the new year is to only minimally buy make-up as I know I buy it as a means of endorphin release. Thanks so much for this!

I do makeup audit all the time! Keeps me from buying too much stuff 😅

How about putting "Intentional Makeup Audit" in the title too? I think lots of enthusiasts will find this video helpful.
I still want that I need a nude palette from Natasha denona
Interesting 🦋👩🦰
