    You know Rio knows game when from all the star players on that Portugal lineup he said "Sousa, i loved that player". Definitely one of the best DM of his generation. Too bad his injuries killed him when he was about to reach his prime. Still won back to back Champions Leagues with Juve and Dortmund. His absence was a massive hole in that portuguese generation as he had been one of the key Golden Generation players from the start and no one came even close to replace him. In fact, the DM position was one of the holes that team had and that IMO prevented them to compete even more seriously in 2000 and 2002.

    • @MrPorto4ever
      @MrPorto4ever 3 месяца назад +3

      Totally agree that paulo sousa was an amazing player but after him there was costinha as DM ( one of the 3 most important players in jose mourinho FC Porto that would win the champions league) so I disagree with the notion that there was a hole in that position in the next years. Not as good as sousa but still one of the best DM of Portugual since the 90's.

    • @gabkoost
      @gabkoost 3 месяца назад +3

      @@MrPorto4ever Costinha was nothing but an average player for this level. Comparing him to Paulo Sousa is heresy. Paulo Sousa was elected best foreigner in Italy when that league was by far the best in the world. He was a star player for the team who was n1 on earth. Costinha was nothing but an anonymous right back for Monaco who fitted well in Mourinho system. That's all. He was a nobody before and a nobody after. A system player who only did one thing which was cutting plays. Paulo Sousa was not only a fantastic DM but was extremely able at actual football. A true modern Italian 6. The DM position was never filled properly. Oceano, Petit, Vidigal, Costinha, Pedro Mendes, Raúl Meireles, Miguel Veloso etc. All were underwelming at DM and many of them weren't even true DM's but there was no one else. The first quality DM since Paulo Sousa, a true top player at the position, was Danilo when he excelled at Porto and was signed by PSG. And even then we need to like the pure Defensive style as we've seen him transform in a CB since those years.

    A few years ago i was strolling alongside the chanell on Candem Town and there was this group of older lads with a pile of books asking everybody who was passing by to sign them and write something on those books. When they ask me where i was from and i told them i was from Portugal they immediatly said "Yes, Portugal, home of some great football players" and i thought to myself "Cristiano, here we go again"... To my surprise, they started talking about Baía, Figo, Chalana, Futre, João Pinto and some other great players of my youth, and it made me very happy that some of our greatest players were still known outside of Portugal so many years after they stoped playing

    Love Vítor Baía and his hair. Love that Portugal 🇵🇹 squad. Sexy football.
    That Figo goal is one of the greatest goals of all time. And that 3-2 comeback win for Portugal 🇵🇹 one of most memorable.
    The bar in Bristol where I watched the match, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 fans were silenced after Figo's thunderbastard. And when Nuno Gomes scored the winner, people stood on top of the bar and cursed the name of Portugal for days on end. It was glorious.

      Rui Patricio and Ricardo, but Ricardo tops both for me.

    • @leomedeiros3933
      @leomedeiros3933 3 месяца назад +7

      @@BenFc356 No he doesn't. Ricardo is iconic, but he was never considered one of the best to us, he was insanely inconsistent, even in 2004 everyone was shocked how Baía was not called to the National team, after being considered the best GK in the World that year after winning the UCL with Porto. The best GKs of Portugal ever are Baía, Bento and Damas, Patrício also wrote his story on that top after that 2016 Euro, but that's it.

    • @BenFc356
      @BenFc356 3 месяца назад

      @@leomedeiros3933 I agree with you on that, Ricardo is the penalty expert but very flawed in open play, the Greece goal that won them the euros was all his fault. Baia was excellent in open play and Patricio’s legendary performance for Portugal in the final of euro 2016 along with his consistency earning the most caps for a goalkeeper in the selecao’s history earns him some recognition and surely he’d be among the world’s most recognized had he joined a big club sometime in his career.

    • @sapiophilo
      @sapiophilo 3 месяца назад +1

      @@leomedeiros3933 Ricardo still has accomplished more accolades than just the saved penalty without gloves, he got to be the best UEFA's GK a few years after Boavista made a wonder campaign by winning their club's single portuguese championship tittle, on which he made part of as well. Also Baia at the time got in the middle of the crossroad between Pinto da Costa's influence in the national team, and if I recall correctly there was a struggle to keep Porto's president incluences away from the National Team, and at that time the coach Scolari acted abruptly and accordingly. Vitor talks like he's 100% clueless but there were a few reasons, ultimately unfair for him.

    I have nothing against 🇨🇿 and have disliked 🇵🇹 for a long time so I want to say it was a great goal I'm pleased he scored it and got through but it was flukey the way it ricochet off players when he ran through and Baia then went way too far out of his goal giving Poborsky an easy option to lob and also scooping it up like that is not as skillful nor pleasing on the eye as chipping it like Suker's goal that Euro's vs Denmark/Schmeichel. You were a bad player in the dressing room, you were toxic and not even the best Portuguese Keeper at Euro 2004 (Porto didnt win the CL in 2004 because of you but inspite of you). Rio never even played in the Euros, only legendary players who contributed to past Euros should be pundits and get to host programs like this. Micah Richard’s is another

    A very overrated "golden generation" they never qualified for USA 94, France 98 and flopped in WC 02.

    • @Vera150607
      @Vera150607 3 месяца назад +3

      It was essentially called the golden generation because of the U-20 World Championship victory over Brazil in the finals. USA 94 in the same group as Italy (tournament finalist). France 98 is in the same group as Germany. 02, several national teams were easily ahead of Portugal.

      For our reality and such a small country this was a golden generation. At the time we only qualified to 2 major competition wc 66 and euro 84.

      It was considered a golden generation by the Portuguese. And that was related to the group quality, youth World Cup titles and expectations, a lot of it based on a National feeling regarding this group of players. It had nothing to do with external views, regarding stats and what not. Just ask a portuguese or two about it and you will understand.

    • @jackmasterdick

      94 they were still too young, 98 was a failure yes but they had Germany to qualify, Rui Costa was sent off for “tekinf too long to walk off” as he was substituted. Semi final 2000, runners up 2004 and semi final of 2006. Not bad for a small country.

      USA were ahead of Portugal were they? They went 3-0 down to them and ultimately knocked out by them and likewise 2014 they got through again at Portugal's expense (I predicted the latter).
