Tip: In art we don't use black a lot for base colours, so instead maybe use a darker shade of blue or any dark shade and it will be much more easier to edit the hair because you have tons of colours to edit with instead of just the grey spectrum. I use a very dark red and the multiple layer and I use a lot of reds, yellows and sometimes blues as my add layer and work on adding numerous different color layers that share a similar tint to the previous but get lighter and lighter as I go up. Then I use the original hair color and make it a color layer so the shading fits the hair :) keep the colors consistent so it doesn’t look like a mess when you add the color layer

As someone who draws their Sona with black hair, I understand your frustration. A few things I learned and my process of shading black hair is as follows : I use deep blue or deep purple as my base for black hair and decrease the saturation a bit ( maybe somewhere in the lower middle of the color cube ) I then play with overlay for the shading and highlights. If the highlight is a little dark, I could always duplicate layers, or change it to linear dodge or both! I don't use pure white as a highlight, instead I use a pastel with a little bit of saturation as my chosen highlight. Usually my highlight color depends on the color of the base ( if the base is deep purple, my highlight is light pastel pink or purple ) I hope this helps ♥

You are not alone, many shows use dark blue or navy blue hair when the character was supposed to have black hair. For example, Marinette from ladybug. When editing a single picture, try making the base hair colour a dark blue nearly black but not quite, then you can use black for the shadows and really light blue and pastel blue for the highlights and glaze. I quite art months ago if there’s some new way than use that.
So I first color the the hair a dark blue or purple and then make a new layer, air brush any color that is the light source (if coming from above and It's hash) or a color complamentry to or just the main color with a little screen, ADD or color dodge. And then put some highlights were ever and lower opacity to liking... PS: even if the light source is not above i still air brush a light color just to make things easier...
same thing just use a darker black (Like outline black or smthn) and lighter grey for add, i sometimes use a fine white outline on the inside of the first outline to make it stand out more

I think maybe you should highlight with dark shades of blue/purple instead of greys and whites? I'm no expert, but i think that might be what you should do.
For base use do dark grey in gacha, then when editing do black shadows and do lots more highlights, for shadows and highlights you can do super dark/light colors instead of just grey
My tips: 1. Draw lineart 2. light grey base 3. black on the ends and starting of hairlines 4. white on the part where it attracts the sun light or any light, then blur it. 5. draw shadows with dark grey. 6. Use any hair brush you want ( I use "round brush" on ibis paint ), now black color with the hair brush. 7. Use the same hair brush but on 20% fade mod (color white) draw on the part you want to be more visible. 8. Finally black thin shadows where ever you want to. And done! I hope I was helpful ^^
you make the base a little lighter so all that could fit in and just edit it! Idk how with this because i edit more realtistic and differently but hope this helps :)

Tip: when doing black I'd normally make the outlines shining white and chose a color like red for example and do highlights using that color and everything is just up to you
For me: 1.Use a few shades of grey and draw Random strands 2.add a new layer and use a yellow greyish colour to draw some lines(depending on the lighting) 3.Blurr the yellow greyish lines 4. Set the first layer to 30% 5. Set the second layer to 50% 6 add a new layer and put it between the already two layers 7. On the new layer use a dark grey colour to draw out the corners of the hair 8.From the middle top draw with the same dark grey to when you drew 9. Open a new layer and set it to add+the 3 layer(the picture of the hair doesn’t count) 10. In the middle of where you drew on the 2 layer use a very dark grey to draw in the middle of 11. Burry it Then you’re done!
This might help you: 1.Change the oc’s hair color to a lighter black 2. Screenshot 3. Import it to what ever app your using 4. Take the original black that was for the oc’s hair. 5. Make the shadows with the black 6. And add lighting!

So I loved ur vid queen, and to your question, I try to change the shape a little for it to seem more magical, and then you can add an add layer and start doing little lines to the hair. If you don’t want the color of the lines to be black, then you can add another color of lieht to the background and add it to the hair as well for it to seem like you shaded it! I hope that helped😅😅

For black hair, I recommend using purple shades for shadows just like in cartoons, I also use white/,gray highlights to show light reflection

I normally use a liter colour example gray to edit black hair, some times brown as well. it all deepens of the tint you want the hair to look like.
