I was the girl. I was approached by them in Shelley's one night and asked to dance on their video. On the day we filmed their video, their manager heard me singing along to the radio. He asked me to be their singer, they had sampled a male vocal and need a girl to sing it. Flattered and curious I agreed. Little did I know it was going straight to number 2 two weeks later and didn't make it to no 1 because we were beaten by Michael Jackson's Black and White. I had no previous experience singing live in front of an audience so sharing a stage on Top of the Pops with Tina Turner among other huge stars, my nerves did get the best of me. I had also been in and out of the medical centre all day taking multiple concoctions for my sore, hoarse, throat they told me I had laryngitis. I'm not making any excuses it was definitely not my best effort. I was way out of my depth but at least I gave it a go. Hey not many of you can say you have been on Top of the pops! Any way I went on to do be a model and I'm now happily married to a Racing Driver/TV Host and live in the Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles with my two young children who are models and successful Actors. As for the haters yeah I agree with you it wasn't great and not my proudest moment. As for the people with the nice comments thanks and Rave on!!!!
Thought the voice went well as a contrast to the underlying beat, it was of its time Madchester and Hacienda era. loved it, when I first heard the song the contrast between the vocals and the beat stuck with me.
Ahh man this is just the bomb .. i remember raving in stoke -on -trent when this was out, of course Stoke had arguably the best rave scene in the u.k. (Shelly`s etc) also Chris Peat came from just down the road in Stafford.. so Moonbell missy thanks for the memories babes ... they were great days .. and also to finish off did you ever work for Caudwell`s mobile phones ?? .. only i went for an interview there back in the day and they told me you worked for them ?? !! not too sure how true it was to this day :-) .. anyway i rejected the offer of p.a. to John Caudwell in the end .. (THANK GOD ) .peace out y`all .. we live to rave another day x x
amazing moonbel1 you owe no one an explanation I have been in the music business 20 years and know the 2 marks well - god bless you not many have been on top of the pops and never can be now well done and thanks for the great memories x
@@SHEARMINATOR yeah too shit music with no lyrics and half off there rave tunes are rip offs and sound stupid tablets have gone shit the music's gone shit and coke has took over now everyone wants too carry a knife and course murder there was none of that back then
moonbell1 i remember this from the day. i loved the performance and still do. me and the kids rave round the living room to it. ialways wondered about whoyou were. thank you for sharing your story.
Superb can't believe the BBC actually allowing this on prime time, purely drugs related. I was 18 at the time going out every weekend, think my parents must have thought what is the world coming to . Great to see ta for posting..
My very first Rave event I went to had the live performance of "Altern 8" during the Spring Season of 1992 in CA,USA.I remember the 15 foot robot dancing on stage.I still have the flyer to that rave 25 years ago(how fast time flys).
Her name was Sarah McNeil . But she later married the racing driver Colin Bell. Hence she became Sarah Bell, after she did the Alternategigs . She went with Iggy RIP for 5 years , my mate we all used to hang out together . They lived in a flat by The Cherry Tree pub in Newcastle Under Lyme Staffs. She hardly ever mentioned her time with Altern8 on TOTP etc unless asked about them by somebody? Sarah is a nice genuine down to earth girl ❤. She didn’t have a attitude at all , she wasn’t a DIVA just the opposite . It’s a pleasure knowing her & poor Iggy RIP.
Yes I remember this one, the girl singing was in my year at school - she really thought she was it - this proves one thing ' nice bum love, shame about the voice' Gawd bless ya sarah ;)
Go easy, as a singer she's no Whitney Houston that's for sure but her spirit and vibe was just right for the spirit of the age. And she was nice to look at too.
@ellegreeko Nah, in TOTPs later days they scrapped the miming thing, although alot of acts still did it, i.e. manufactured pop twits, but most indie/rock acts chose to play live
One of a few acts to have preformed live on top of the pops. You can tel the audience do not listen to RAVE... whats the clapping all about😂😂😂??? A Top tune 🤘🤘🤘
This is awesome: I mean the fact that there are so many old skool fans still, like me. I'm pleased to see this track re-enter the Top 40. Very impressed. Personally, I prefer 'Hypnotic St-8' or 'Evapor 8'. THEY should be the singles getting all this hype!
Weird how top of the pops mimed every song since the 70s then decided to insist on live vocals from the early 90s just as the dance/rave scene kicked in. Great tune well performed.
Seem to remember them slapping the chords out taking the piss I would remember!! This was the start of it for me a couple of years after this I was Dreamscape ing etc.
Yes her vocals would be completely unacceptable in a Madonna song and she wouldn't have made it into an Andrew Lloyd Webber production - but she was so right for this performance. Like Nico out of Velvet Underground.
If we had chavs back in the early 90s, THIS is the music they would be listening to! IIRC, didnt they do another appearance on TOTP a couple of weeks later, but with a black girl on vocals?
anyone remember the inspector morse when the rave went bad and the big inflatable pig went on fire? Message to youngsters - if u don`t like pork scratchings, don`t go to a rave. :-)
@gecko303 I liked the fact that EVERYONE mimed on top of the pops except Altern-8 and Shades of Rhythm. It was another big fuck off to the mainstream and I loved it.
yeah, proper dance stuff, I loved the sample they used from the film nekromantic - very underground, I always wondered how many people picked that up lol
had to check this out as it's a mint tune, and the fact you called yourself Chandlerbingbong caused a chortle also :)Shud it have not been Chanandeler tho..lol???
Why is there another Altern 8 - Activ8 video of a performance on TOTP with a totally different black vocalist?! Which was first and why the singer swap?
@chandlerbingbong I agree with you. The dance scene 'back in the day' had virtually no attitude involved with it. I had the massive pleasure of meeting Danny Rampling (Danny is my inspiration for becoming a DJ) on the Easter weekend and had a good chat with his manager and Ratpack's girlfriend who was there too and we were all in agreement that there was a lot more love back then. By the way, RobDeManc, look up Gala - Freed From Desire as I'm sure she was on something when she performed :-)

mike archer works at the argos call centre in acton gate (nr stafford) now, in agood position tho, earning a decent wedge, got no ideas about chris peat, know more about his brother ade cos hes constantly in trouble with the old bill lol...
its a big shame you dont get eny desant dnace tunes in the charts now :( no its just lets take a tune and lets see how much cash we can make and call it a dance tune
I really liked Altern-8 but they should have done what the Prodigy did and refused to go on trashy Top of the Pops and kept the rave scene to the clubs and big raves. The Prodigy refused an offer to perform 'Charly' and 'Everybody in the Place' on TOTP at a very similar time that Altern-8 went on and did Activ-8 because Liam Howlett didn't want to be seen to be 'selling out'. Still, A-8 made some brilliant records.
@hhhaaazzziii I dont think you get it,it was meant to be 'off' a little and it really is hard to do it that way ,trust me,not a modern over produced, polished recording . peace !

Not only were you smoking hot but you absolutely made this vid!
What are you doing now? Did you stay with altern 8?
No candy statton.
a true classic. who remembers seeing them at the eclipse in coventry? awesome nights in there!
@Dectheboner - Her name (at that time) was Sarah McNeil - I think she is married now so I have no idea what it is now, hope that helps
I love the vocals I love the spirit, where has it all gone !
Kids are still throwing illegal raves! Still pumping music scene

@@MichaelWilson-jr2xh you're just jaded and old. The kids are keeping the rave scene alive, go to a Club Glow night and you'll see for yourself
Yeah, the effort made it great
I remember watching this and I'd never seen anything like it. The shyness in the voice contrasting with the hard track was something else.
I remember that bird in her cat suit making my week, when I see this back in the day!!

Thanks Moonbell1 thanks Altern 8 those day's will never return, we are all older now, great time's though.......🙂🙂
Saw altern8 at rejuvenation leeds 2016. Superb .
Loved this video from back in the day,, great vocals from the girl too.

I love her vocal, I get someone happy enjoying it and absolutely in that MOMENT, wonderful.
Rave is - electronic - *punk* music. Its spirit is about getting up there and doing it, and inspiring other people to do the same.
Oh my goodness Moonbell...I was in the same class as you studying fashion design.
This takes me back to my time at college in Stafford
mark archer - legend!! hes still producing some top notch tracks these days !!

loved this tune back in day, still sounds ace, love the string sample
. . i remember i was a kid in dublin, this baby rocked the place . .
I remember this period so well. Totp was full of dance acts...and I often wondered if the acts took E when they performed :-)
some did.
man i love it! its so toddler hahaaha, but dont get me wrong toddlin around is the best evaaaa!!!

Back when top of the pops got given a taste of the underground !
I remember this on totp back in about November 1991...! I actually recorded it, and still have the VHS tape somewhere...

TOTP Was good at that time, after they moved it to Elstree and started having live performances
She's doing a gr8 job with the vocals!
Why is there another Altern 8 - Activ8 video of a performance on TOTP with a totally different black vocalist?! Which was first and why the singer swap?
This one was the first recorded 2 weeks before.(the vocals aren’t great) then it reached number 2 so they swapped vocalists and re recorded it

Yes then prodigy mocked Altern 8 with the video everybody in the place by writing masks

how that dance is called? that they do?)
@StaticAttackMUSIC I completely agree with this.
haha, only the totp crowd would express themselves by clapping their hands and swaying side to side to Altern-8.
