G'day Chris, actually purchased a Gomier tricycle, electric assisted, back in June 2011. The concept is good, but, the frame was not built for the stress that my body weight was putting through. This was a 350 watt motor, downrated to 200 watts, so I had a thumb control on the handlebars to operate the front hub motor. All electric bikes are meant to have a maximum motor output of 250 watts, and be set for a top speed, assisted, of 25 km/h, but, you can pedal to go faster!
With the batteries, ended up purchasing a 30 aH battery from China, and added that to the tricycle, along with the 14 aH battery that was originally provided. Between the two batteries, that gave me 10 hours of stop / start riding. Sadly, the Gomier snapped once too often, and finished up getting a mate who is a diesel engineer by trade to build a new tricycle for me. Based on a 75 mm C channel, it still has the front hub motor, but, it was set up to climb a wall. A 3 speed cluster on the pedals, a 3 speed coaster / can gear set in the middle drive, then a 7 speed cluster on the drive axle. I know that bottom gear is veeerrrry slow! I also know that it may not be prudent for me to ever use top gear - I am not game to work out what the ratio is for that gear, but, I know it will be quick!!! It also has a mixture of braking. Rear dual disc brakes; coaster brakes on the centre gears, front block brakes, operating to the rim, and option is there for front disc brakes to be fitted. It also has a brake lock pin on the front brakes, to prevent the tricycle rolling away!
With the tricycle, you have to tell it where YOU want to go, otherwise the steering will tend to do its own thing. You are not able to ride no hands, as you are not able to balance the tricycle due to the rear axle. Once you get used to riding the tricycle, they are a very stable and a straight riding cycle. My ex rode with me one day on a bikeway, and was amazed at how consistent I was from the edge of the path, and with minimal variation of the distance from the edge of the path over an 8 km. distance.
Just a word of caution: People over 100 kg are not meant to be riding cycles. The Australian Standard only covers pedal cycles up to 100 kg. This is part of the reason that the mate was asked to build the new tricycle, to handle my 150 kg weight!!! From what we can tell, the tare weight of the new tricycle is 140 kg!!!

Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles. Safe protected bike lanes and trails are needed so adults and children can ride safely. Speak up for bicycles in your community. Bicycles make life and cities better. Ask your local transportation planner and elected officials to support more protected bike lanes and trails. Children should be riding a bicycle to school and not be driven in a minivan.

Bicycles, ebikes, electric cargo bicycles, robo taxis and escooters are great options for last mile, short distance travel.
Reduced transportation costs and fossil fuels free transportation.
Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles by providing SAFE, PROTECTED BIKE LANES and trails. Every adult and child should own a bicycle and ride it regularly. Bicycles are healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. Electric bicycles are bringing many older adults back to cycling. Ride to work, ride to school, ride for health or ride for fun. Children should be able to ride a bicycle to school without having to dodge cars and trucks. Separated and protected bike lanes are required. It will also make the roads safer for automobile drivers. Transportation planners and elected officials need to encourage people to walk, bike and take public transportation. Healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. In the future cities will be redesigned for people not cars. Crazy big parking lots will be transformed with solar canopies generating free energy from the sun.

Absolutely Ken. more should be done to encourage people into them like safe riding space, rules to allow use, and incentives.

The place that e-bikes really excel is uphills.
They kind of make hills disappear
We replaced one of our cars with an e-bike.

Whoa! That is someting I want to do - work is about 10kms from home, and features a massive downhill section (read: big uphill bit on the way home). This has me intrigued.

      @@chrisvanderstock A perfect solution!
      Just get a good one.
Recommend a bike with a Bosch battery & motor, & 85 Nm torque (for the steep hills)
