    - [00:00] 🗣 Your accent might not be the issue in communication; it could be your articulation.
    - [01:59] 📖 Practice articulation by reading aloud for 5 minutes in the morning and 5 minutes at night, overemphasizing mouth and tongue movements.
    - [02:31] 📚 Document emotionally impactful moments in your life as potential storytelling material to improve your storytelling ability.
    - [05:18] 🌟 Familiarize yourself with high-stakes situations to perform better in them; expose yourself to such situations regularly.
    - [08:49] ⏸ Pause before responding to questions to appear thoughtful and increase the perceived value of your response.

from my experience, the pause before responding depends on what your face is showing. If it looks worried or confused the pause could do worse. Also depends of the question, if someone ask you something simple like ”how are you” you better answer fast cause the person could take the pause as something bad

Me when I pause , instead of thinking of answering the question, am thinking of thinking , or thinking of what the person waiting for my response is thinking

consider a conversation as a quest (like in games) and you will start thinking how to succeed the quest, so keeping the discussion ok

Yeah I usually do the same when being in front of a group of people. My mind just goes blank and I can't think of anything during the 5-second pause.

hi, not sure why I did not found you before. This is a God send. I am doing this exercise now, and my face is so sore. I do have a french accent, I stutter sometimes and I speak softly, fast, and barely articulate. I am at risk of losing my kids in custody court, because the evaluator wrote she felt no emotions from me , no credibility, I sounded cold, and disinterested. Based on my speaking style, and being shy , introvert, She deducted that I didn't love my kids, did not offer them affection, and recommend the judge to give 90 per cent of the custody to my ex, who is much better communicator, a native english speaker, a long life trained salesman, and an extrovert.
This is why I want to work very hard to sound better, credible, charismatic, friendly, make a connection , learn breathing and not run out of breath. My goal is next time we go back to court, to sound like I truly feel inside, for my face, and body and voice to represent confidence, credibility, create an instant connection.

Thats how we speak in Southern Africa 😂 we naturally emphasise all letters. Remember Nelson Mandela from South Africa?

As a young American with only tv to teach me the difference in these places, I always confused British, Aussie and South African accents. Once I actually met and talked to people from those places, I can pick them up much better. I particularly like Aussie and South African accents.

When I pause, no matter how briefly, someone thinks that is their cue to start talking about something totally unreleated.

    • @RussellClausse

You need to give visual cues that you are going to continue talking.
Let them know also that you want to finish your point before u actually start speaking.
“You mind if I finish my thought here?”

@@RussellClausse You make a great point, and I do that sometimes. The biggest problem is that people listen to respond, and dont listen to "hear".

    • @H_B_R
      @H_B_R 8 месяцев назад

Pausing after making a point signals that you've finished speaking, unless you pause mid-sentence or immediately after someone asks you a question. So that is why people develop the habit of using "hesitation marker" like "ummmm" and "aaaaahh" to fill the pause. Which is not actually good. So try to think of everything including ending when the question was being asked to you. If you make it up as you go it will be less coherent and you will start making up stuff including exaggerations and weird metaphors that does not make sense.

That the problem with Indian languages. We have 49 vowels and consonants designed as per tounge, teeth, throat, lips movements. And it’s tough for me “not to sound” fee letters. Like “little” is “lil” for Americans. For me it’s LI-TT-LE with big sound of letter T.
