A friend had a hive loaded with Small Hive Beetles. He tried the blasters and swiffers and did not see great success using them. He purchased an oil tray bottom board insert from Dadant and virtually got rid of all of the small hive beetles. (Some put DE in them instead of oil) Just another tool in the fight against these insidious bugs.
I really found this video very informative on the beetles. It is the first one that has truly discussed the beetles cycle. A lot of helpful hints. Thanks Jason and take care. Tim
I have my freezer set on -5 degrees. It takes 48 hours. I took some out after 28 hours. Put the frames in the sun and some of the larvae was still alive.
Thanks Jason, it's great to hear of different methods of beetle control. I lost a hive to beetles and used small traps that turned out to be a pain to maintain

New subscriber here. My hives rest on large cement pads to start off. Around the pads I have placed rocks. The pupa can make it through the rocks to the soil, but I am eventually going to cover them, plus a large area with crushed concrete and dry sacks of concrete to make the terrain less hospitable to them. I have heard of using squares of corrugated plastic signs with a roach paste injected deep within. The beetles can access the holes, bees cannot. I have not heard of a brand of roach paste that is labeled for such use. I use Swiffers for now. Great material on your channel. Thank you for sharing.
Great video Jason, I use the same concept with the DE in my Apimaye hives bottom tray. I also use homemade Beetle Blasters inside the hive with DE in them. The only drawback from the CD cases is the bees tend to propolize the holes in the CD cases after only a few beetles go in. I gave up on the Swiffer sheets after the bees kept chewing them.
I use Diatomaceous Earth in my beetle blasters and in the pan under my bottom screen boards. Easy to clean and reuse the beetle blasters and pan. Be sure to get food grade DE. DE is fossilized plankton that acts like razor blades to any insect with an exoskeleton. DE become ineffective once it gets wet so it would have to be re applied after it gets wet. I heard bottom entrances work but my take is hive beetles can land on the hive and just walk in through cracks and crevices in the hive and they can definitely walk upside down on most materials. Typically you have to treat your baffle material with a product to make it so slick the SHB can't hold on to when up side down.
Jason I have never heard anyone say anything about hive beetles being able to get into a pipe like that BUT that idea may just work . Even if it just keeps a few out it maybe something to try . As always thanks for your video’s and your informative information. Thanks

Hay Jason, I just watched your video on small hive beetles from 4 years ago on tips and tricks. Question on the pvc pipe on the upper part of the hive, it seems like the beetle could still get in the hive from the screened bottom board. What's your thought on that ? Great video.
The beetles are not here yet in Quebec but I guess they will soon be. I memorized your methods to get rid of them. Hoping I don't need them until a few years
I come from South Africa, where small hive beetle originates. Most important thing is to maintain bee space. Make sure bees can access the whole of the top bars. Otherwise bees will chase small hive beetles onto the top bars and because bees cannot access this space, small hive beetle will just hide here. What they then do is very interesting. They stimulate the bees antenna that are chasing them and this causes the bee to actually feed the small hive beetle. Major waste of resources Other things you can do, when feeding patties, only feed what will be consumed completely within 5 days. As you mentioned, eggs take 7 days to hatch. Great tips. I did read about the beetles using their antennas to trick the bees into feeding them. That's crazy! I am gonna have to trap your fly trap idea. Does the type of yeast matter?
Thanks Jason! Very informative and helpful! I had some last year and I tired a commercial bottle trap...what a waste of money.. not one beetle in the trap... hopefully I can get a handle earlier this time
Yes! I have heard the beetles could not hover as well and observed an individual using a holed-out solid bottom board as a preventative. And after watching one fly yesterday during my inspection, I believe it too be true.
I just learned about small hive beetle infestation the hard way. One of my hives was destroyed completely. This occurred within two weeks' time. I'm installing swiffer sheets today and hive beetle traps and have just ordered beetle bottom boards.
Sorry to hear about your issue. Sounds like your about to put the whoop down on them though. Make sure you use "unscented sheets". Also I am now using nematode to kill beetles in the soil before they become a problem ruclips.net/video/B_gIF9x1vSE/видео.html Good luck there a nasty pest!
Hi Jason. I am in Australia. Thanks for your informstion relating to small hive beetle. I am also interested in the plastic elbow you suggested and how I install that, if you can show me ? Keith
Hive beetles lay eggs on pollen so the larva has protein to develop just like bee larva...the detritus that accumulates in the bottom of the hives is a place that needs to be strictly monitored as it is a perfect source for beetles to lay eggs and larva get out of control. Very strange how our raspberries and blackberries barely have buds and yet our locust bloomed out several weeks ago...

How about combining the Swifter sheets with the CD case and honey... Cut out a piece of the Swifter sheet to fit inside the CD case, cut out openings on all four sides of the CD case, try to remove material from within the CD case to create more space inside of it, then attach the square piece of swifter sheet to one side of the CD case (on the inside) with double sided tape, and apply a bit of honey to the middle of it, then close the CD case and place inside the beehive.
@@JCsBees You could also try a beetle barn trap or CD case, and just put strips of heavy duty double sided tape inside the trap, with the hopes that the beetle will stick to the tape and get trapped inside.
I'm trying fly trap jars filled with a concoction of 1 teaspoon yeast, 1 teaspoon sugar, one tablespoon honey and a cup of water hung in a tree about 25 yards from hives.
I stop feeding pollen patties after March. If I’m giving a split a little boost, I will cut a 1/2”X4” chunk and give them. I also use a pyrethrin based pesticide mixed with water and apply in a 3’ circle around the hives. Use a watering can and apply after dark. Don’t use a sprayer, it will kill the bees if it gets airborne. I know a lot of people don’t like using stuff like that around their hives, though.
Yeah, I read about the pyrethrin but I'd rather avoid chemicals if possible. I did see there is some soil-dwelling entomopathogenic nematodes that can be used as a form of control but not sure how well they really work. Have you heard of this?
Jason Chrisman I’ve never heard of that method. I’d like to try the swiffer sheets but with my luck, I’d crack the box and there’d be my queen, stuck-fast and dead.
I understand but it's not too often the queen comes to the top of the frames. You can reduce your risk by sticking the sheet in only the top brood box.
I just discovered this week that I have hive beetles. Surprised me. My hives are in a shaded area as my yard is almost all wooded and near marshes. I put beetle traps in today with vegetable oil. You did not mention that as a method to catch the beetles. My second hive is a horizontal hive with trays . Can I use DE in the trays or vegetable oil? Since the bottom screen is larger roundhouse for bees to go through will the DE hurt the bees. Thanks for the video. I learned a lot.
@Dave Vierthaler Sorry to hear you have beetles, they are such a pain to get rid of. I am not 100% sure about DE and bees but it does seem they are always kept separate from one another so you might want put it some place the bees can't reach to be safe. Sorry I didn't mention the oil traps, to be honest though none of the traps on the market blew my mind. Best of luck with you battle.
JC I need to do a video on my channel about the PVC portal hives been running them for 3 years and there are no beetles in them. I also have bottom entrance as in the bottom of the bottom board hives with no beetles.
I am curious about the beetle buster board and varroa. I use screened bottom boards to help with varroa. does the varroa fall through the beetle holes too?
I have 2 other videos on the guardian entrance, I completely stopping using the Beetle Buster though. ruclips.net/video/ToxzhNmv_bM/видео.html ruclips.net/video/mUY7NslUXFk/видео.html
beetle Blaster oil traps go between frames and work well killing adults. You didn't mention any chemical controls. GuardStar is a treatment for the soil below hives.
Thanks for sharing the information. I only mentioned what I am aware of, as I mentioned these pest are fairly new to me. I will have to look into this Goldstar.
I don’t know why beekeepers don’t install a simple cheap made screen bottom trap below the entrance so the larvae never even make it to the soil. There’s info on the internet. Simple 4 pieces of wood frame with a screen bottom so water can drain. Inside wood lined with sandpaper so they can’t escape when it’s wet outside. They use the water to stick to the wood to escape. Sandpaper breaks that wet smooth contact. I’ll be trying it on my hives when I get started.
JC, another good one. A quick question. I wrote about the early Oxalic Acid dribble and you did answer me. You stressed that the OA only kills mites on the bees and not in the cells. I got the impression, and it might have been obvious that I should wait until there were more hatched bees and the frames were pretty full of them. At least that's what I thought. Right or Wrong? Also May this year in the SF Bay area is almost unprecedented in the amount of rain and cold weather we're having. So I didn't want to upset them too much. But it should be clearing tomorrow and am anxious to get it done. My thoughts were to do it after the foragers come in in late afternoon. Your thoughts please.
No, it will not kill mites in cells. For this reason you should wait until you have little capped brood. Waiting on the foragers to return is a good idea. I would resort to Randy Olivers article to learn more about dribbling. It's listed in this videos description. Best of luck!
My beehive has one of these trays, but DE isn't working! They're writhing in it but not dying! Shite. I'm in there nearly weekly squishing the beetles. I have blasters, they do a bit of work... what are you doing about the damage to the combs?? Are you removing the damaged wax and product/babies nearby larvae holes? Freeze it and remove everything? I can't seem to stop them enough in time to keep the bees production healthy. I have an entrance trap coming soon, but we'll see... adding swiffer soon, and more dio I suppose around the nooks and crannies... do you scratch and scrape the corners of the frames?
Jason, you're so correct. Bruce is really a wonderful fellow and truly believe in his product. The darn guy practically builds each one by hand and he's really meticulous about quality and construction.
Hello from australia, Loving your videos. very informative. I have had bees for three years and I am learning lots of tips from you. Ps love your apiary. Annie
I’m going with the beetle blaster with oil and a dab’o honey and clamshell (like the cd case but looks better) beetle traps with poison and dab’o honey in hives before I see beetles.
I made my own hives . The entrance is underneath the hive about 600mm above the ground and facing down . I still have some small beetles in my hives not really problematic. I would say the hovering theory is 70% correct.
@@TheRainHarvester Yes mate. In the winter and cold weather when it's harder for bees to fly they will struggle to get into the hive.the same situation when they are carrying a lot of pollen. Everything needs to be custom made for it. I am changing them all to standard hive box with landing board.
I bought a nuc from a local bee keeper to start this hobby and I didn't realize the frames were infested.... I had no mentor and was just You Tubing to find out what was going on.... but the hive swarmed.... if you see larva that looks more like large grains of rice ... it is the beetle....
@@fionmor4893 The bees could had swarmed for many reasons.....no food resources, to hot in hive body, no room in hive body especially if you left them in the nuc, maybe you used some chemicals or treatments that the bees did not like , like cinnamon and peppermint or mite treatment, or some other treatments that you used at your yard. The bees could had made emergency cells, after the queen got killed and every queen cell could mean a swarm until nothing is left.
Depending where you live, you may not have beetles especially if you live in the northern part of the US and Canada. Make plans and treat your bees for mites in July, August may be to late. And you may have to re-treat in fall. Take a mite count with alcohol. It takes time to lower the mite count when treating and some treatment does not kill the mites at all instead just make the male mite sterile so it can not reproduce. Know your brood cycle because after about 3 weeks your new worker bees emerge and with it new mites. Now at this point hopefully you are still treating for the newly arrived mites. When fumigating with OA(oxalic acid), OA stays active only for a couple of hours every-time you use it and is only good before the honey flow (early spring) when the mite count is low.
The elbow doesn't work , guardian makes one and a special front entrance, both did not work It was very difficult for the bees to use no matter how long and I personally think It was harder to defend and possibly Entices encourages Robbing. That would need to be watched for longer periods with different apirys
@@JCsBees Yes. No sliming or anything, but I addedBeetle Buster Bottom Boards about two months ago, I have at least four BeetleBlaster oil traps in both deeps on all my hives, and still have more than I'm happy with. Trying the peppermints now to see if that helps.
Sorry to hear about your issues. The Beetle Buster does not work. I have one and tried it for one season and I actually think it let more beetles in than it helped. Mine was given to me by the creator to try then when I told him how I felt about it he started making threats. Sad deal all the way around. I know what you need to try, peppermint candy in the hive. The red and white striped one. Add one to each cover of each box and the beetle problem will cure itself. I haven't tried it but it's all over RUclips right now. Good luck!!
I strongly disagree with the statement that hive beetles can not hover. They do a good job hovering around my hive and their landings are very well targeted. So far this year we do not have many beetles, just seen 1 in one of my test hive. Last year we had them by the tons this time of the year and we had a lot of rain so far mixed with warm temperatures.
Joe May did a video with the CD case technique but he added a poison that he wouldn't reveal. After a bit of research it appears to be boric acid mixed with a bit of honey
Steve Jackson I believe it may be the powerful roach bait like the comment above. The pesticide isn’t allowed to be used with/around bees, at least your government inspector will tell you this.
Richard McCallum yes, roach bait is boric acid. The formula I found was soy flour and boric acid in equal parts then add enough honey to make it slightly thicker than honey then enough crisco to make a very thick paste. 2 or 3 blobs about the size of a BB. The other control technique I use is pool salt under my hives. It kills the foliage so no weed wacker needed and makes the soil inhospitable or larva. The bad part is it'll bee years if ever that those patches of ground could be used for agriculture
Steve Jackson that’s interesting. I haven’t heard about adding honey. The beekeepers who I’ve seen use it just use the paste in the tube. I guess the honey is to attract the beetles to eat.
Another awesome video. I'm new to beekeeping and saw my very first SHB last week. Already I hate them(: I came across a product called "Guardian Hive Entrance" The critics say "the bees can't do good housekeeping on the bottom board" (similar to the pvc top entrance). Have you heard or tried Guardian, if so what were your findings as far as housekeeping? Thanks for all your knowledge and time.
Tried the Guardian Hive Entrance on two of my 8 hives and they did not work. I was hopeful. I do use the DE on the bottom of screened bottom boards and they do help, they also kill any mites that drop down. Still working hard to control the first wave of hive beetles this year, last year was not as bad. May try the CD cases with boric acid, still want to research what if any adverse reactions of using boric acid.
Last year I had hive beetle infestation that caused my bees to abscond in July. It was bad. I have a new hive this year and started out with Guardian hive entrance and also oil pan under the bottom board. I have 2 oil traps per deep box. My whole yard is mostly shade and humid. I put bees in the sunniest spot. I have very few hive beetles now. I don’t know if the Guardian works well or if it’s the oil pan in bottom. I suspect it’s the combination of everything. Or maybe it’s just really early in the season. Last year I tried CD cases and 2 beetle traps in each box.
Jason Chrisman I seen a RUclips video of it in slow motion, it was pretty gross actually lol I trying to remember what channel when I think of it I'll clue you in.man MORE RAIN Today Ughh..
Jason Chrisman WYATT MAGNUM WAM has a video showing same thing, skip to 40 seconds ,it's a Nikon camera against Observation hive shows it really well, the other video showed the part where the bee feeds the beetle, but this one shows it kind of like the bee volunteer Lee walks over there and then the beetle takes it from the Bee.. crazy..

JC I need to do a video on my channel about the PVC portal hives been running them for 3 years and there are no beetles in them. I also have bottom entrance as in the bottom of the bottom board hives with no beetles.
I would love to see a video on that. If you do make a video showing your setup please let me know.
Cheers mate fro. North Queensland. Have ya had much to do with the guardian round entrance or long one.
Yes, I have the Guardian entrances on one of my hives. It does slow down the beetles but does not stop them.
@@JCsBees cheers for info.
I am curious about the beetle buster board and varroa. I use screened bottom boards to help with varroa. does the varroa fall through the beetle holes too?
Save your money for something that works. The beetle buster did nothing for me but cause grief.
Got yourself a new subscriber, very informative and interesting.
You are a good teacher, very informative.
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
wow... great video.... thanks for this .... I had a hive swarm because of these beetles
They are a nightmare pest from what I am seeing. Best of luck!
Do you have any followup videos on the beetle buster or Guardian enterances and probably more relevant are you still using either now?
I have 2 other videos on the guardian entrance, I completely stopping using the Beetle Buster though.

Thankyou very very much. So appreciate your advice.
What about a dryer sheet in a CD case?
Jason, have you been using Xentari to prevent moth in your stored boxes with comb wax
beetle Blaster oil traps go between frames and work well killing adults.
Have you guys heard of combat roach killer, Walmart has it, very cheap and works great
They are little traps you put under hive
As long as it is not in the hive it is legal
Shared your video on our bee club facebook page.
good stuff, thank you for sharing with us. looking forward to opening up our hives again this year.
Definitely some good advice and information my friend. Thanks for sharing.
Great video, Jason! Thanks for sharing.
I have two Bruce Wallace Beetle Buster Bottom Boards and really like them. They're very well made.
I am gonna do another video on just the bases soon. I really like mine and Bruce has been a huge help.
Annie
@annanmarfc Hello Annie, Glad to hear my videos are helpful to you. Hope you subscribed!
Can you give a link where to buy that bottom board
It's actually a inner cover turned into a bottom board. This video explains it ruclips.net/video/0JejQW7ZKks/видео.html
I’m going with the beetle blaster with oil and a dab’o honey and clamshell (like the cd case but looks better) beetle traps with poison and dab’o honey in hives before I see beetles.
Very good. Where are you located?
Central Ohio (Licking county)
I made my own hives . The entrance is underneath the hive about 600mm above the ground and facing down .
I still have some small beetles in my hives not really problematic.
I would say the hovering theory is 70% correct.
Cool! Are there any disadvantages With this method? Great idea!!
Would a foot high work?
@@TheRainHarvester
Yes mate.
In the winter and cold weather when it's harder for bees to fly they will struggle to get into the hive.the same situation when they are carrying a lot of pollen.
Everything needs to be custom made for it.
I am changing them all to standard hive box with landing board.
@@TheRainHarvester
I would say that would even make it harder for the bees to get to.
@@mrmaaaxaaam1 thanks! Your experience is great!
Another great really informative video. Marinus from Australia
Many Thanks Mate! Like your videos & the way you share your experience & knowledge.
great video jason
have no beetles yet in my 5 hives
Hopefully it stays tat way for you, they are a pain in the butt to deal with.
Great video. Very informative.
What if you already made the mistake of putting box 2 on? I have some hive beetles😥 and alot of shade.
A friend of mine uses Oxalic acid to treat for beetles. It works well for him.
Great video
What is the brown flakes on the bottom board?
Great Video. Do you put the jewel cases on the top of the frames or under them?
Top.
I haven’t seen any yet but I have only had my bees a month now.
I bought a nuc from a local bee keeper to start this hobby and I didn't
realize the frames were infested.... I had no mentor and was just You Tubing to find out what was going on.... but the hive swarmed.... if you see larva that looks more like large grains of rice ... it is the beetle....
@@fionmor4893
The bees could had swarmed for many reasons.....no food resources, to hot in hive body, no room in hive body especially if you left them in the nuc, maybe you used some chemicals or treatments that the bees did not like , like cinnamon
and peppermint or mite treatment, or some other treatments that you used at your yard.
The elbow doesn't work , guardian makes one and a special front entrance, both did not work
It was very difficult for the bees to use no matter how long and I personally think It was harder to defend and possibly Entices encourages Robbing.
That would need to be watched for longer periods with different apirys
Just found your channel. Where are you located? I'm in north Florida.
I am in central Ohio. Thanks for checking out my channel.
@@JCsBees okay. I just have to adjust what you say by about a month for me.
Nice job and thanks,
Good info Jason!
So...how big are the holes in the "floor" that the bees can't get through them?
Can I use dryer sheets as a small hive beetle trap?
Very informative! I am in Ohio also, where about are you located!
St. Louisville area. Where are you?
@@JCsBees I am just east of Cincinnati
Where can we get the beetle buster in USA?
Loads of information one of your best videos thanks Peter Australia.
I have never seen a beetle in my hives here in Saudi Arabia. May be because hot weather
Thanks!
Thank you!
Are you battling small hive beetles?
Last year we had them by the tons this time of the year and we had a lot of rain so far mixed with warm temperatures.
thank uuu man
Joe May did a video with the CD case technique but he added a poison that he wouldn't reveal. After a bit of research it appears to be boric acid mixed with a bit of honey
Awesome! Thanks for sharing the information.
Combat roach bait . That came straight from Skinny bee man .
I've seen bees corral the shb in the hive
Good stuff👍👍👍
If heard peppermint candy along corners of EVERY level of hive works
I've heard this and plan to try it. You've been watching Earl haven't you? 😊
Food grade DE or does it matter?
Yes food grade
Jason you have said that you give some crystallized honey to your virgin queens when they hatch would queen candy work? thanks
Sure would! I just like feeding something thick so she's don't get all covered in honey.
Put a bug zapper where beetle can go but bees can't go . use harbor freight fly zapper with solar power.
Did you know that small Hive beetles supposedly massage the bees mandibles and then the bee literally feeds the small hive beetle, tricky little pest.
Yes, I read that too. I haven't seen it but I assume it's true. Suck a tricky little pest.
Jason Chrisman I seen a RUclips video of it in slow motion, it was pretty gross actually lol I trying to remember what channel when I think of it I'll clue you in.man MORE RAIN Today Ughh..
I'd love to see that video when it comes to mind. Yeah, the rain is getting old really fast.
Jason Chrisman WYATT MAGNUM WAM has a video showing same thing, skip to 40 seconds ,it's a Nikon camera against Observation hive shows it really well, the other video showed the part where the bee feeds the beetle, but this one shows it kind of like the bee volunteer Lee walks over there and then the beetle takes it from the Bee.. crazy..
Hard peppermint candy in you hive and you will not have beetles or mites. Cheap simple, no chemicals and it works!!!
hive beetles are not prevented from entering using this method.
