Really loved Sun Yi 💙 I think this is the only time we saw a smile from her in this spirit realm. It just seemed that she was sad that her family wanted to get rid of the panda. Seeing when Mei did the first ritual and she looked up at the mirror and Sun Yi is just deadpanning like 😐I'm sure she sees it as a blessing. Not a curse.
I think it's more like she doesn't want to interfere with their decisions. When Mei asks her "I'm not going to regret this, am I?" the smile was to reassure her that, whatever she chose, she wouldn't regret it. It's their panda, so it's their choice, as long as they can live with their decisions, she will be happy.
It's really sad to pass down a gift to your family only to have that gift essentially locked up and ignored. The reasoning behind it is fair but still. Anybody would probably still feel a little dejected.
Something that seems to get overlooked a lot in favor of the mother-daughter bonding (which IS important!) is how Mei connected more with her ancestor than any of her family did because she finally truly honored Sun Yee's by keeping the panda. Sun Yee did what she did out of protective love for her children, so it must have been disheartening down the line to see so many pandas/gifts sent back by descendants who saw it was a mere inconvenience.
I loved how I could finally tell; when Mei first performs the ritual, Sun Yee doesn’t acknowledge her and let’s her pass. Then, when Mei keeps her panda, you finally see Sun Yee smile; the panda isn’t just a blessing, it’s a bloodline. Imagine Sun Yee watching all her descendants give up their pandas, believing she would be the last of her ‘kind’ forever; now, for once, she’s no longer alone
Never once has, one of her descendants family ever wants to keep the red panda with them except for "meilin lee" the girl who except for who she truly is!
Sun Yi looks so sad when Mei was initially going to seal away her Panda but here, you can see her mood shift. She looked happy and proud at her decision.

Actually, it was shown also in theaters in the Philippines (Disney + Hotstar isn't come yet in the Philippines ). Sadly, I haven:t seen yet coz I don't have enough money and there is no time.
I really love this scene a lot more, Sun Yee seeing mei keeping the red panda spirit makes her proud and happy after all of her hard work in protecting her children and passing the red panda spirit to her descendants, and yet they wanted to get rid of it. Perfect scene.
I feel like Sun Yi had always meant for her descendants to choose whether or not to keep the red panda, hence the point of this ritual. But so many of them were probably pressured into choosing to be normal people and in all honesty, it's probably harder to live with the red panda. But when she finally saw one of them actually choosing to keep it for herself? All because she actually loved it? How could she not be proud to see one of her descendants make such a choice?
I love how proud she was of Mei Mei! Sometimes, we feel a closer connection to an ancestor than a living relative for things as important to us as the panda is to Mei. Too bad San Yi has no lines, I was hoping she'd say something wise like Oogway. 😅
That would have been nice, but I think Sun Yee having no speaking lines is fitting with her role. She’s not there to provide advice as a mentor or to influence Mei’s decision to accept or reject the panda. She’s simply there to show her descendants one path they might take, and to support them if they should choose something different. Sun Yee doesn’t need to say anything to Mei, her eyes and her smile convey a thousand words all by themselves.
First of all. Props to the music score team. The Sun Yee moments were breathtaking, because of the animation, moreso because of the music playing. Second, I actually rewound back to their first encounter. When Sun Yee showed her the mirror she was all so formal, a hint of sadness, and dissappontment, as seen with the way her lip is a bit raised, and her eyes and brows were low, very intense, like she expects nothing from Mei But upon Mei's second chance. We can see Sun Yee's face liven up. Her eyelids blocked less of her eyes, and her brows were slightly more raised. A hint of curiosity, and dumbfoundedness, as Mei stays behind in the spirit realm, and the mirror fades away as the Red Moon finally passes When Mei gave the impression of wanting to keep her gift, Sun Yee went from surprised, to feeling relieved, and finally joy. She was probably demoralized by how many of her descendants didn't want the gift, but inevitably helped them transition to normalcy. When Mei showed up, she probably was thinking the exact same thing. She did not expect Mei to deny the ritual not once, but twice. Here comes this gal, willing to break the streak, to at least give her gift a try in the modern age. If the story went on longer, I'd bet Sun Yee and Mei would be more close and connected Throughout the decade I've been seeing a lot of non-vocal characters express so many emotions in movies, this was one of them.

For Sun Yee to see her descendant to keep her Gift (the red panda) that was given to her, and Finally that someone in her family line sees it as a gift not a curse, this moment was truly remarkable and got me in the heart strings! Anyone else notice Sun Yee has red hair? I think this implies she kept her panda instead of getting rid of it, and Mei is also probably the first one to realize the pandas not actually a nuisance like the family thinks it is, but actually a gift your supposed to hang onto.

People were calling this one of Pixar’s worst movies because it was about a 13yo girl hitting puberty and because it was the ‘9 millionth’ Disney movie about generational trauma was it was only the second one they’ve done by that point. I can respect an opinion that’s more like, “It wasn’t my cup of tea,” over, “Omg when is Disney going to stop making cringe movies about generational trauma and bring back villains?”
