    If you slice them and leave them in a bowl of milk and a bit of sugar in the fridge overnight you will get a wonderful treat the next day, they turn the milk into a yogurt after about 3 hours. It's one of the best foods i've ever had! I just bought 2 trees and i'm hoping they thrive like they did where i grew up.

    I am glad you changed your mind about the taste! The more you let them ripe on the tree, the better they taste. Try cutting only the ones that come out just by giving them a push... they are really sweet. You can tell they are that sweet by the colour. The darkest, the sweetest!

    They also have a yellow variety larger and better.The yellow variety taste kinda like lemons and guavas.You should try growing the yellow variety but its rare and you can buy seeds or plants online.

    Cool, I never knew that there were red guavas! I grew up in the Caribbean and while I am familiar with other types I never knew there were red ones. Thanks for sharing.

    Where I live, which is in Guildford, Southern England, the lowest temperature is typically around -3/-4 C in the winter (although on a mild winter's day, the temperature can reach 10-12 C). The temperature can reach maximum of 28-32 C in the height of summer. However, the British weather is living up to its fickle nature, since our 'summer' this year has been nothing but torrential monsoon-like downpours, with daytime temperatures barely nudging 19/20 C! Do you ever get snow in your part of NZL?

    Hi, I recently moved to NZ and we absolutely love the strawberry guava. We would love to grow our own. What time of year would we try to plant some from seed? Do we need to take the seeds and dry them first? Will they grow in pots since we are renting?

      Yes, they grow fine in a large pot. As above, they are restricted Auckland and further north. You can buy small plants from bunnings for about $8.

    How would you describe your climate? Warm temperate? I wish I could grow grapefruit, feijoas and tamarillos outside in England! I'm going to try growing guava indoors as an exotic houseplant. If I'm lucky, it might even produce fruit. Have your mangosteens germinated yet? My seeds have been in compost for 5 weeks, yet there's no sign of germination.

    This looks exactly like Red Strawberry Cattley guava. Aren't they the same? They come in Yellow Lemon Cattley guava also. Cold hardy to around 25 F, I would estimate. I grow both in NW FL. The Red has stronger flavor than the yellow does.

      I think they are the same. It's called Strawberry Guava in the US and Cherry Guava in some other parts of the world like UK and Australia.

    can you make a video on how to grow those red cherry guavas from seed?

  • @garrygreenfingers2784
    @garrygreenfingers2784 12 лет назад

    Sure, I have no doubt that a subtropical species would be able to survive outdoors in the UK from May until September, but from late autumn to early spring we can get heavy ground frosts. In winter we sometimes get several cms of snow if the winds are blowing down from Siberia. I take it that you live in the volcanic North Island, where the climate is relatively mild compared to the South? I have seen those forests of huge tree ferns on Man Versus Wild (Bear Grylls). Truly impressive landscape!

  • @bcupcake
    @bcupcake 12 лет назад +1

    Ditto. I am actually trying to grow this tree from seeds... I don't even know if it's possible (just started the process a couple of days ago). I also started growing soursop (guanabana) from seed... by accident! You should try growing them, they are so pretty when they sprout. I'll send you some photos to your FB page.

    I wonder whether the hard seeds help digestion as well as clean the digestive tract. Try yellow ones instead.

    How to start from seeds?
    Plant whole fruit or seperate seeds?
    Do seeds need dried?
    Soak seeds?
    Do they need cold stratified?
    Can you send me any seeds.
    Please?

    • @TheKiwiGrower

      Hey, you can just clean the seeds off and sow them. They are pretty easy to grow from seed. Often the seedlings just naturally pop up under the tree. Sorry, I don't have any seeds at the moment :)

    I really really really hate cherry guavas or strawberry guavas. My family has a white guava that has a much better taste, it is something like a mild apple taste. It is about 10 feet tall or taller at the moment and produces loads of guavas.

    Very nice, I will get some for seeding, I live in Argentina but, near here, at Uruguay, the government and some companies are beginning to produce this fruit massively, along with acca sellowiana, Pitanga (Surinam cherry) and Guaviyú. They say that next summer and will arazá jams (Psidium cattleianum or strawberry guava) and feijoa (Acca sellowiana) on supermarket shelves. I advise you to use the google translator and read this
