We’ve all struggled with getting a cheap floor tom in tune. It’s hard to get it to resonate properly and still have a nice, tone-filled low end. Today I’m tuning two different floor toms side by side to show you how I approach tuning a cheap tom versus an expensive one. We’ll see what the differences are and what the specific challenges are associated with a lower-end drum. We’ll tune both heads in realtime, and I’ll share tips for maximizing resonance and tone as well as handling sympathetic resonance from the kick and snare. There are very clear differences between tuning a nice drum and tuning and cheap drum, and these differences are VERY apparent with toms, especially floor toms. An expensive drum is much easier to tune, and it tends to tune up quickly and easily. You have a work a little harder at tuning a cheap drum, but you can still get a good sound. Sometimes you just have to find the tuning sweet spot. Once you find it, though, you’re good to go.
