The ECM-M1 is Sony's most powerful on-camera shotgun mic yet and for good reason. With 8 selectable pickup patterns and a backup recording fail-safe feature, you won't want another mic!
Thanks for the good review, just bought this mic, looking forward to it, not just for speech, but for capturing ambient noises such as birds, streams etc. for my sound fx
@@BrionneOlsen yeah it looks great, though I think the low pass filter and noise cancellation sounds a bit cheap for the cost of the mic, and is not particularly effective. Also, they need include a small adaptor to clip a normal Sony battery to the bottom, and have a line out port on it so that it could be used on a boom arm or attached when using a cage or something, pretty frustrating that they have limited it to Sony hot shoe only
@todayimgoingto I generally don’t like the LP filter or NC features on any mic because it just takes away frequencies that cannot be fixed in post. So I often switch those off. For the fact that it’s limited to the hot shoe, I hear you. I suppose Sony created another problem by solving one. I doubt they were thinking about such an application because it would make sense taking into account the different patterns available, especially for dialogue. I wouldn’t want another product just to attach to the mic (which will add to the cost) just so I can use it as a boom 😅. I suppose that’s why they released the ECM-W1M and the ECM-W3 for those kind of applications.
Sadly, no. I’ve only used it to test for vlogging but I watched the launch video and it covers outdoors applications but I am not entirely sure for wildlife.
24-bit and 4Ch? Wow, I was looking for answers about it if it records 24-bit, but 24-bit with safety track and an omni directional channel for ambience? This mic is the future indeed and a must buy.
Most of the newer Sony cameras record in 24 bit 4 channel and I think the ECM M1 is the only mic for now that can record all 4 channels. It’s pretty good I must admit.
@@BrionneOlsen Yes, I know! Problem is when you use the 3.5mm jack it's only 16bit and 2 channels. Was considering buying the FX3 handle for my A7SIII on AliExpress for such features, now this one is added to the list.
@@BrionneOlsen I personally think the price is actually fair. Not cheap, but fair. Cheap as well if you need that 4 channel with an omni channel and a -20dB one. Now there are no wildlife use on youtube of it, so I need to figure that out myself. If not good enough the FX3 handle with 2-3 mics will do.
Actually great question! It’s great for capturing atmospheric sounds but I doubt it would be able to capture any animals sounds with any of the directional patterns. You would need to be close to the source for that.

Ah! Amazing Michael! I really hope you enjoy the mic. It’s such a cool mic 🙌🏽. I appreciate the comment, thank you.

@Bo_Hazem that handle is a bit expensive. The mic would be a better option in terms of price

If you're editing on Adobe Premiere, how does the 4-channel recording appear? Does the video clip in the timeline show all 4 channels?
@@MasterofNone365 the video clip has 4 audio tracks linked to it. It should create four audio tracks in Premiere when dragged on to the timeline.
@@BrionneOlsen ok awesome! That's good to know! Thank you!
@@MasterofNone365 as long as your camera supports 4 channel recording, you should be good.
Only pleasure 👍.

@@BrionneOlsen Can you suggest any audio solution? I normally use 600mm lens
@ThePhotoGuru I would say the Sennheiser MKH 8060 or MKH 8070 would be good for when you’re in the field.
Would you say stereo setting still wont cut it?
@rnrnrkrk994 it didn’t when I was testing it. It’s connected directly through the hot shoe (digital signal). So it won’t cut out.
