It’s sad this show doesn’t get the attention it deserves. It is brilliant. I was completely blown away when I saw episode: back story. Bro’s legit just made a masterpiece short film in the middle of the series that seems completely irrelevant but somehow ties in with the plot
The main problem is that it is on Apple TV. The platform is really not going to hit the kind of audience that is going to fall in love with it. The show really has a "Community" vibe to it with whimsical characters and then a sort of "The Office/Parks & Recs" vibe of each individual character having their own plots spinning. If Apple let the show pop up on Netflix or Hulu I think it would take off in popularity.
you're absolutely correct! community itself got bigger and bigger due to it being on netflix, i can say the same for arrested development too because this show has a lovely ensemble cast of characters that are. morally grey and spiral out of control like arrested development. the fact that nobody watches apple tv and this gem of a show is on it is just so frustrating
I don’t know, because community wasn’t well received when it came out either. There was certainly a cult following but it was definitely struggling in the ratings department. It wasn’t until three years after its debut that it got recognized, and now 15 years later, we look back on it fondly. That’s kind of the standard for art. It’s not appreciated at first, but after existing for a certain period of time people begin to give it the credit it deserves. A lot of the greatest artists in history weren’t recognized for their work until decades after they died. The hope is that the Internet speeds that up, but it’s still gonna take some time.
I've been surprised by 2 episodes mythic quest s3 e7 · sarian, S2 E6 · Backstory...by themselves they are some of the best episodes of TV I've seen in a while.
This show has moved me in more ways than I ever could of imagined when I too, checked it out because of Danny Pudi. And thank god I did! I'm completely in love with it. It's characters are so beautifully written, and it's 'other' episodes are just straight up masterpieces :0
I stumbled across this show recently and decided to give it a shot. I found it charming at first, but Dark Quiet Death was character writing on a level I hadn’t seen in a long time on a sitcom. As I watched more episodes I became more and more invested in these characters. By the time I got to the season 3 episode where Ian tells Poppy he didn’t believe in her, I knew this would forever be on my list of most beloved shows. It’s not perfect but what it does well is absolutely outstanding. Thanks for your video. I, too, wish more people were discussing this show and delving deeper into it. You mentioned you’re an editor. I’d love to see an analysis of how they use editing. Essays like that-that explain how the show is made-really add to my enjoyment of the original as I can begin to appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into it. Please consider a follow up to this review!
I just watched the Pandemic episode and by the end I had tears. It made me look back at my pandemic experience. I’m August 2019 Vanilla wow released and I played day and night. By the time the world changed I was already work from home for 6 months. 2 years later, I found myself in a different field of work but, I found the best people to work with at the office. Watching this episode made me reflect so much.
I'm so happy that you made this video!! one reason I love this show is the relationship between Ian and poppy. I found it super interesting from the first season but it kept getting even more complex and deep and I don't think I've ever seen a platonic relationship like theirs on TV before (or maybe just any relationship to be honest). those emotional moments for them in particular resonate with me so much, truly fantastic writing and acting
Mythic Quest is now my favorite show. Blown away by what they have done, all around. I hope it goes on and on, but right now just waiting for season 4.
I liked your review, and totally agree with almost all of your points. Especially that no one watches it, sadly. However, I worked in the video game industry at multiple levels over 10 years, and aside from the fact that everything in Mythic Quest is turned up to 11, I'd say it's fairly accurate to what working in the industry is really like. People asking art (and dev) to "whip something up?" Check. Egomaniacs that have no idea what they're doing? Check. Narcissistic marketers? Check. Company that takes advantage of it's employees and doesn't pay them enough: Check. Working insane hours? Check. Really, the only thing they're missing is laying off 75% of the company once a year.
Let's be real - nobody talks about a lot of the Apple TV+ shows. In addition to Mythic Quest, there are other really good niche comedies like Acapulco and Schmigadoon (which I guess has an audience but I don't really get the impression that it has broad appeal). They definitely prioritize quality and I really appreciate that. I also appreciate that they renew shows that have little to no public discourse just as much as they renew the really popular ones, it seems.
+1 to this. I heard in an interview with some of the Ted Lasso creators that Apple+ is a solidly supportive studio in that they give a LOT of creative freedom to the people making the show which (as he said in the video) makes the shows really high quality.
I have Apple+ and neither of those two shows have EVER popped up as an option or I totally would have watched them. Hell, I only ever saw Servant because I specifically did a search for it. Apple+ clearly as some serious issues with promoting their own content. Meanwhile, they're constantly promoting shows that aren't free on their service.
Brilliant, watched over and over - five times! Lucky to catch this from Day One! Love every actor , so much talent. Love the lines, stories, scipts!!! Hope to see many more!!!
@@heydoeradio7298 I actually didn’t. There’s a lot of slang out there and word usages I’m not familiar with. The words sound similar but aren’t in the same places on the keyboard so it couldn’t have been a typo. I was genuinely curious. Your assumption saying I “clearly knew” it wrong. I love the show too, I don’t understand the reason for the response like this.
Wonderful video. Show seems awesome. I’ll have to check it out! Also, I appreciate that you shared your background in theater. I love watching video essays or reviews on movies/shows/video games but a part of me always goes “oh great, here we go” whenever the essay touches on the acting or voice acting. Too many times, people will bash on a scene or performance of an actor and call it cringe or awkward but then when I watch the scene itself play out, I find the scene was performed very well and that the actor pulled off what the scene was going for. It’ll be scenes that’s supposed to be awkward or the character, not actor, struggles with communication. Then we have the other side of the spectrum where a character rages and screams and everyone praises it as the best acting when, while not bad, was just fine. Point is, I also have a background in theater/acting and it’s definitely clear that you know what you’re talking about! :)
At the end of a very long work year that is soul sapping and mind numbing beyond pain... it is what it is and it is Mythic Quest and IT ALWAYS refreshes me. Now with a full smile on my face once more I rush with abandon back into the jaws of life on my Mythical Quest for answers. long story longer... I love this show it is nigh perfect and you will too. I promise.
the “other” episodes could have easily thrown off the show or become like the episodes that you skip but they aren’t. they are beautifully executed to where they might be a person’s favorite episode. they also did a really good job of finding younger actors that look like their older actors. especially poppy. little poppy’s facial expressions was very similar to older poppy. besides that the comedy was top tier. i heard someone say “have the audience feel like the discovered the joke instead of it being thrown at them” which i feel this show does very well. we can tell as the audience that the writers, actors and people behind the camera love their job simply because how everything flows together so flawlessly.
I couldnt believe that I didnt know about this series. I also was shown the dani pudi clips but never considered watching it until binging the always sunny podcast where Rob and Meghan are both talking about this show, finally decided to give it a go and then immediately binged all three Seasons (Im already excited for the next one). Just goes to show you how great the writers of both shows are.
Dark Quiet Death, the other episode from the first season is on of the best works of cinema ever. I recommend the show to everyone but say at the least watch that episode.
@Dan the Zam As you say in the video - "separate short movies. Binge watched over past 2 days (2eps left of s3) - nothings happened, it teases but ultimately fails. Would not recommend. Especially post CW.
I will literally never shut up about how fantastic the character building in this show is, as someone who creates my own characters, it absolutely blows me away how well rounded these characters are
As you said, please do not ever shut up about this show!!! I would watch video essays on every episode if this show if you had it in you! (Also, I was sitting in a coffee shop while watching this, and I was NOT prepared to see that Poppy Quarantine clip again. Fully teared up)
Little did I know that the young version of C.W. was played by Josh Brener... A.K.A "Big Head" on Silicon Valley. I just watched the whole show the last year and didn't notice that.
I 100% agree. Came to see this video just because of this reason. It's nearly a modern day the office (or as close as that genre can get on today's context). It's genuinely extremely well written, fleshed out characters, a bunch of shifting tonalities and very heart warming. I love this series
I accidently stumbled upon it through my youtube algoritm and I'm so glad I found it! There are TONS of workspace comedies but this one feels refreshing due to its (in my opinion) unique characters
agreed and the pandemic episode, in particular, was something truly unique… I found it devastatingly beautiful… the humor, compassion, solidarity, loneliness, struggle, comeraderie… bring tears of joy and catharsis. Masterful performances and productions!!
Just started watching a few days ago (on season two). As a massive Sunny fan, I really love the inconspicuous references to Sunny. The show is becoming one of my favorites
I started watching because I was taking a break from my community binge + I knew Danny was in this show. When I watched the first minutes of the first episode, I was skeptical if this show was actually worth my time because it was a lil cringe, but I was actually HOOKED by the second episode. I love Brad but oh my god the storyline and jokes are so amazing and funny. The writing is so underrated and much more heartfelt and beautiful than so many popular shows. This show needs more fans bc I need to talk about it or I’ll go insane.
Bro season 3 is legit the funniest thing ever created. Such a sleeper show with amazing humor. Honestly the most beautifully incredible show I’ve ever watched.
omg this definitely sounds like something i would enjoy!!! i don’t really like sitcoms but honestly the setting is interesting to me bc i’ve been wondering what it’s like to work at a video game company. (i know you said it’s not accurate, but i’m still curious). and if you say the characterisation is this strong 😭😭😭 damn i definitely need to watch it
The pandemic episode is THE BEST REPRESENTATION OF THAT TIME. It is so easy to forget how we all tried to function with 110% anxiety and just make new normals - but were all on the verge of falling apart. Weezer's album "Ok Human" is another good piece of pandemic art. Love it love it love it. I'm glad you felt the same too.
Such a phenomenal show. I finally watched Community recently (I know, I know, late to the bandwagon) and Danny Pudi was my favorite. Getting to see Abed pretending to be different people (Han Solo, Don Draper, the guy at the dinner, etc) really demonstrated his ability to play different characters so I really wanted to see him in something else, and it was fantastic to see him play Brad, a character that is SUCH a stark opposite to Abed. As you said, the writing, the casting, and the acting are absolutely fantastic and I have grown to love each of the characters. While I know there are many parts of the show that are nothing like actual, real world game design - there were parts of the show that were almost too real - like when "girls can code" came to the office and we got to see all of the performative diversity shit 😅 I have experienced that so much myself, and the episode was hard to watch with how real it was. I'm really surprised that so few people know about the show, and I imagine being on Apple+ doesn't help that. It really is underrated, and you summed it up really well here.
I have watched all 3 seasons and I do like it, It's not over the top and I care about the characters! (the final fantasy scene was pretty damn cool too, I remember playing it when i was a kid) Another TV show nobody talks about is Warrior, based off the writings from Bruce Lee. His daughter helps produce the show too. There's nobody making videos on the show and the 3rd season is coming to HBO this year! best thing i've ever watched. highly recommend!
I love this show so much I’m doing an analysis for my popular communication class but unsure of what episode I should pick? Could you give me suggestions?
OMG im just seeing this!! If you haven't picked an episode yet I recommend A Dark Quiet Death from season 1 or Backstory Season 2!! I hope the analysis goes well!
I loved the show too haha! Hey other than giving Apple more money how can we express our "gratitud" so that they don't kill the show and keep making more seasons? Any ideas?
its funny how I also got into Mythic Quest the Danny Pudi doorway and what I thought is boring at first before I knew it I already finished the whole 3 seasons of it.
This show is basically how I feel about Turn A Gundam, it's one of the best shows I've ever seen but nobody really talks about it. The only advantage Mythic Quest has is that it's currently airing still so it might have a chance, meanwhile Turn A is like 25 years old now.
Because of the extreme lag between seasons Mythic quest and Upload are great shows that are difficult to get into on top of being Apple TV...and having a Apple TV subscription is not the only way to watch
I was genuinely surprised by this show. Normally I am not a fan of shows about games because sometimes they just feel so out of touch with gaming and cringe me out but I actually enjoyed this one. Was surprise to see barely anyone talking about it online. Honestly overall, I have also been surprised by Apple tv. There is a ton of good content out there for a streaming service that is pretty brand new.
The "Other Episodes", aka, when they get their writers in a room and say: "Hurt us in the most beautiful way possible." Mythic Quest & Ted Lasso are the only reasons to buy AppleTV. Both are extraordinary, but Mythic Quest is still going! Maybe it'll be like IASIP and people won't realize what a masterpiece has flown under their radar? I hope so. That "Dark Quiet Death" didn't get a single nomination is a crime against art.
From what I can tell, this show is nearly perfect for people that are on the spectrum. Characters like Poppy and Jo are extremely relatable to me in them being extremely passionate and driven at their jobs, but have a very difficult time in social interactions and experience frustration when they don't understand why things are the way they are. Specifically the episode where Poppy and Ian first met, Ian notices that Poppy never seems to understand what a joke is or when he's being sarcastic. Or when Jo struggles to understand how friendship works in the Christmas special, it makes it very easy to relate to them since they're written to be as human despite their many flaws (especially Jo's many many flaws).
I think the best thing this show does is really capture some of the current events in a super subtle way, that are very on the nose, for example, the sensation of shifting to remote work during a pandemic, or dealing with a massive number of white supremacists joining a server (which literally happened in New World)
Great video, but I don't get the hate on AppleTV. Its one of the best streaming services out there. Less content, but way more polished as you explain on Mythic Quest :) Big "Jo" fan here :) Oh, and "Qurantine" is one of the most epic episodes ever on ANY show (imho). Holy shit this was sooo well done. "Everlight" placed second.
It makes me so angry that no one knows about this show. It is genuinely some of the best TV I have seen in years and exactly what so many people have been asking for from declining Netflix shows
I love this show, I think season 2 is especially strong. It sucks it doesn't get the recognition it deserves. I've actually been plannign on making a video about it.
I was utterly decimated by the pandemic episode. I just sat and bawled through most of the latter half. Amazing show, I could not agree more with the sentiment of wanting more people to see it. I have yet to talk to someone who's actually seen it.
I am a game developer and saw mythic quest because I had 3 months of apple plus for free. I wish it wasn't on apple plus. I enjoyed it sooo much. Yes is not real game dev but the issues they bring up are real and come in discussion and are decisions studios have to make. I thought the shovel episode was spot on, we had just finished talking about a shovel mechanic for our pirate game. I honestly had no intention to watch it and was browsing stuff on apple plus.
Not many people have watched this show because of the platform limitation. Like "The Office" became more popular after its run, this show will be a cult classic in future.
I also consider Mythic Quest one of the best shows to come out in a long time. Although the fact that you can only view it on Apple TV is probably its biggest downfall.
It’s sad this show doesn’t get the attention it deserves. It is brilliant. I was completely blown away when I saw episode: back story. Bro’s legit just made a masterpiece short film in the middle of the series that seems completely irrelevant but somehow ties in with the plot

It is so easy to forget how we all tried to function with 110% anxiety and just make new normals - but were all on the verge of falling apart. Weezer's album "Ok Human" is another good piece of pandemic art. Love it love it love it. I'm glad you felt the same too.
Mythic Quest is by far my favorite tv show online.
This show is so good and I enjoy the different emotions one goes through watching it idk how people don’t know about this show more
Such a phenomenal show.
You had me at the moment you said Nick Miller
Binged and loved the show imo it was a mix of Silicon Valley, 30 rock and The Guild… Poppy is my new Liz Lemon lol
Guess I gotta watch Mythic Quest now.
I forgot about this show until I started watching last week. Watched the first two seasons in a couple of days. Way better than I thought. 😊
I have watched all 3 seasons and I do like it, It's not over the top and I care about the characters! (the final fantasy scene was pretty damn cool too, I remember playing it when i was a kid)
Another TV show nobody talks about is Warrior, based off the writings from Bruce Lee.
Everlight was so awesome 😊
I loved the show too haha!
Hey other than giving Apple more money how can we express our "gratitud" so that they don't kill the show and keep making more seasons? Any ideas?
This is by far, one of, if not the best, sitcom that has ever been produced!!
10:03 THIS. Me trying to convince my friends to watch this.
its funny how I also got into Mythic Quest the Danny Pudi doorway and what I thought is boring at first before I knew it I already finished the whole 3 seasons of it.
i'm liking mister quest so far
Not trynna be an Apple shill but almost everything on Apple TV is a banger
After watching severance yeah I can’t even deny that
the pandemic episode has me sobbing, like caught me so off guard and I ugly cried
There is a ton of good content out there for a streaming service that is pretty brand new.
involuntarily crying at the end of all the other episodes lol
Please talk about this more!
The "Other Episodes", aka, when they get their writers in a room and say:
"Hurt us in the most beautiful way possible."
Mythic Quest & Ted Lasso are the only reasons to buy AppleTV. Both are extraordinary, but Mythic Quest is still going! Maybe it'll be like IASIP and people won't realize what a masterpiece has flown under their radar? I hope so. That "Dark Quiet Death" didn't get a single nomination is a crime against art.
You might like Shrinking. Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent) created it with Bill Lawrence. He writes on it as well.
I saw it and loved it.
There is other ways to watch it!!! it exists on a lot of sketchy websites that are not illegal, which is how i watched it.
Top 5 SITCOMS tbh. No cap
Less content, but way more polished as you explain on Mythic Quest :)
Big "Jo" fan here :) Oh, and "Qurantine" is one of the most epic episodes ever on ANY show (imho). Holy shit this was sooo well done. "Everlight" placed second.
It makes me so angry that no one knows about this show. It is genuinely some of the best TV I have seen in years and exactly what so many people have been asking for from declining Netflix shows
Community and The IT Crowd are really good too
I love this show, I think season 2 is especially strong. It sucks it doesn't get the recognition it deserves. I've actually been plannign on making a video about it.
bro mythic quest is fire iunno why it don't got the attention fr
I love MQ and I Love BRAD AND DAVID together lmao
I was utterly decimated by the pandemic episode. I just sat and bawled through most of the latter half.
Amazing show, I could not agree more with the sentiment of wanting more people to see it. I have yet to talk to someone who's actually seen it.
DINNA PAHDEEE 🤗🤗🤗
I am a game developer and saw mythic quest because I had 3 months of apple plus for free. I wish it wasn't on apple plus. I enjoyed it sooo much. Yes is not real game dev but the issues they bring up are real and come in discussion and are decisions studios have to make. I thought the shovel episode was spot on, we had just finished talking about a shovel mechanic for our pirate game. I honestly had no intention to watch it and was browsing stuff on apple plus.
for all intensive purposes :)
Love this show, and omg the "other episode" ohhh feel.. Now I have to watch this series again just because of this video.
It’s a wonderful show
Not many people have watched this show because of the platform limitation. Like "The Office" became more popular after its run, this show will be a cult classic in future.
Ive been binging the shit out of this show
I was rambling about this on Twitter X 😅😅 and was silenced
Genuinely think it’s Mac and cos best writing ever. Highly HIGHLY underrated show
I also consider Mythic Quest one of the best shows to come out in a long time. Although the fact that you can only view it on Apple TV is probably its biggest downfall.
