- Speaking at TGC’s 2021 National Conference, Dane Ortlund delivered a message titled “Gentle Savior, Gentle Shepherd.” He addressed a common insufficiency many believers-and church leaders, specifically-possess when it comes to really knowing Christ.
Through four Old Testament passages, Ortlund outlined the gracious, merciful, compassionate character of God that “rolled out the red carpet and constructed a perfectly fitted throne” for the King who would appear in the New Testament to inhabit it.
Understanding the character of God throughout the Scriptures sets the stage for knowing how Christ approaches us, Ortlund taught, and how church leaders should then approach those under their care.
This message has brought me to deep repentance. God's Spirit has been at work.
This was perfection!!
Amen
Came at the perfect time... those who seek Him - will find Him.
God is good and Jesus is "the express image of his person." (Hebrews 1:3) Thanks for this excellent message on the heart of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
So blessed by this sermon. So blessed
Many pretend to be kind, but are bitter & resentful, full of wrath - in secret. So, I discern the speech of others outside of the church, less they fool you. I am despised because I believe in a kind & gentle savior. But, I will persevere and continue to walk in love anyhow. For Jesus didnt take offense at His accusers, nor did He defend Himself.
Excellent teaching 👏 !
I need to apply some of this theology to my parenting.. 🙄
Calvin rightly said the shepherd has one voice for calling the flock and another for driving off wolves. Luther was the same. Most significantly, Jesus was the same. You canvass this in your book, and I query why you now only present half the story.
Agreed. Preachers are the problem in Christianity today. They elevate God’s compassion over His righteous indignation. Therefore, people ONLY believe in a God who is characterized by compassion. God has many attributes, and He is perfectly all of them. Preach the entirety of who God is and we will see far less false conversions.
Because it’s TGC and there are hierarchical stages of deconstruction built into their ‘gospel cake’.
It would have been one thing if he had approached this from the stand point of: ‘hey, we’re going to study one of God’s demonstrated and stated attributes...’ That he even feared he needed to qualify his position stating he’d be attacked, should have been his sign. The attributes of God left absent full counsel of God’s attributes and purposes is much like the soda jerks of days gone by. The sparkling water is all the same, but palatable inoffensive syrup concoctions are what’s being served. What I thought was most damaging was his destruction of God’s holiness. By doing so, he reenforces the ‘lego kit’ that BigEva is counting on people coming away with. It’s with those lego’s that all positions, thrusts, and admonishing will take form. Contrived Post-Modernist tactics with sprinkles in my estimation. The very premise of his plea beginning at 34:31 made me feel nauseous.
Thank you for the clarity and honesty of your take away…..I am fired of candy coated preaching…my ears don’t need to be tickled
This sermon and his book were not inspired by post modernism but actually by the truths of Scripture that were rediscovered in the Great Awakening. This sermon is inspired heavily by the doctrine that Jonathan Edwards and Thomas Goodwin preached, along with MANY other puritans, and also John Bunyan. But NONE of them were in the business of pushing the weak “Christianity “ we see today, but they did understand the compassion of God towards REPENTANT sinners. 💞 They were NOT preachers that tickled people’s ears AT ALL, but they also saw that Jesus is gentle to those who turn from their sin. A bruised reed He will not break. Is He fierce in His wrath and anger toward the unrepentant who reject Him, yes, 100%! But He embraces, joyfully, ALL who TURN to HIM and REPENT! 💞 God is full of compassion, and He is also just and righteous, so therefore He MUST have anger and wrath towards sin, it is because of his compassion and love that He MUST punish sin, either we turn to God in repentance and trust in Yeshua(Jesus) alone for our salvation and forgiveness and God gladly embraces us with the gentlest and warm embrace, or we reject Jesus and we must then face the deserved wrath of God for our sin. Wrath and compassion go together, and it is not tickling someone’s ears to say that, to anyone who repents from sin and turns and trusts in Jesus alone, He is full of love towards them and embraces them.
He will lovingly receive all who COME to Him, but NOT those who reject Him, for them He will pour out His wrath. It’s quite simple and straightforward.
We are ALL deserving of God’s just and righteous wrath, but God provided a way for us to be forgiven and reunited to Him in an intimate, close and beautiful relationship, that way is Jesus ALONE! 💗
“If your preaching of the gospel of God's free grace in Jesus Christ does not provoke the charge from some of antinomianism, you're not preaching the gospel of the free grace of God in Jesus Christ.” - Martin Lloyd Jones
@@Lyndee12396USA great comment. Unfortunately being in Reformed circles, Jesus is presented in such a way that is cold, hard, and crushes your soul, breaking a bruised reed. Jesus is both/and. Unfortunately being in Reformed circles for six years, the compassionate side of Jesus is under emphasized, which for me, and maybe many others, keeps them in a cycle of guilt and sin. Only recently (I've been a Christian twelve years) have I been able to overcome certain things by seeing that God/Jesus is ALSO compassionate, gentle, lowly, like a father who takes pity on his children (Psalms 103).
Does Ortlund support the causes of Nike?
Just remember there are two sides to Christ He’s coming back for the unrighteous and they’re going to fry if they do not repent He is NOT going be so no nice next time. What is equal to gods love? God‘s wrath. God bless…
Poor way of communicating truth
How do you understand from the bible that God’s wrath is equal to his love?
I read “God is love”, but not God is wrath.
Jesus is the image of God showing us what God is like and he is “full of grace and truth”, not love and wrath.
Yes, God does get angry, but isn’t it clear from scripture that it is not a defining characteristic of God, whereas love is?
I am 10 minutes in and i have not heard Christ or the Bible. He is animated and well rehearsed.
1:04 , John 14:9...
Christian hater
Keep listening with an open heart. God wants you to hear this.
Listen 10 min with critical spirit😢 Awesome message of the gentle and kind God we serve❤
He’s a false teacher.
Nope. He is preaching to Christians. Jesus is not angry with His sheep.
@@AndalusianIrish His message to the 7 churches would say differently. Only His sheep will overcome. Persevere to the end. Only He truly knows who His sheep are. Work out your salvation with fear and trembling.
