  • June 9th, 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of one of the greatest feats in sports history. It was the day that Virginia born race horse Secretariat captured the Triple Crown and the attention of Americans from coast to coast. In his latest “I Have a Story” Greg McQuade introduces us to one man from Caroline County who witnessed greatness from the beginning.
    Alvin Mines worked in the stables at The Meadow horse farm when Secretariat was just a foal in 1970. Alvin and his colleagues recognized almost immediately how special and powerful the horse was. Secretariat would go on to shatter records at the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and at the Belmont Stakes in 1973. Records that still stand today. Alvin says Secretariat was a legend and he believes those records will never be broken. Alvin says as Virginians we are lucky to claim one of the greatest athletes in history as our own.

    I was fortunate to get to visit The Meadow when it was open for tours. I got to stand inside the foaling shed Secretariat where was born. It gave me goosebumps! He won the Triple Crown the year I graduated from high school, and I knew I watched something very special that year. Amazing (but not a surprise) that the mighty Big Red still holds the stakes records in ALL three TC races. I doubt we will ever see his equal on the track. ❤

    I laid my hands all over Big Red in 1978. My ex husband was raised in Paris Ky and went to school with the Hancocks, he surprised me by taking me out there on a Sunday in December. Clay Arnold, I believe was the Head Stud Groom and I couldn't BELIEVE when he had one of the guys go out and "bring in Red for this little lady to meet". So there he was, covered in mud, thick winter coat and HUGE! He was such a gentleman he literally stood there on a loose lead and let me love all over him! You could still SEE the look of eagles in his eyes. My polaroid picture is my wallpaper on my phone! I'll never ever forget and am so grateful to my ex, Clay Arnold and Big Red for the privilege of meeting a once in lifetime miracle

      His running time for a mile and a half has never been broken.
      What’s amazing about it to me is that he set that World record time in the Belmont without being asked for his best because of the large gap between first and second. Essentially, he set the World record without ever going into fifth gear.

    • @jackbell5206
      @jackbell5206 Год назад +6

      @@jlove8445 you're right, Ron seldom even showed him the whip. He held him back in the first two triple crown races and pretty much just let him run his race in the Belmont. That burst of speed he showed in the Preakness was just an example of how much faster he was than other horses. If he had ever been truly pushed there's no telling how fast he could have run. The fact that he broke those records without being pushed and they still stand 50 years later is just amazing!

      @@lildog15 Thats like saying someone's country of origin cant claim them because they didnt die there or live there during their final moments. Virginia has equal if not more rights to claim Secretariat as that is his birth place, that is the place he was raised in and trained in. Just because his mother was bred there doesnt give y'all any more rights, and just because he died there doesnt y'all that much more rights to him. He was retired there because he was meant to be a stud, Penny's family only had broodmares that they bred, not stallions otherwise she probably would've taken him and by then Secretariat was happy where he was in Claiborne, moving him would've done more harm than good, it would've stressed him out.

    I was given a private tour of the Meadows the day after the Virginia State Fair closed in the fall of 2016 by Leanne Ladin. As it happened, I was there on the date of his death. She kept the huge "poster" of him, life-sized, up and I look so small next to him! She told me stories about how as a young horse he would go into the river and they would frantically have to find him! My mom was in hospice in Dec. 2015 and I was up one night very late and suddenly the name "Secretariat" flashed into my mind. I went to YT and looked at the grainy Belmont over and over again and cried my heart out. After she passed in Feb. 2016, the NYRA finally released the color film of the race. That fall I went to his birthplace and then to KY to his grave and wept unabashedly and was given a rose from the bouquet on his grave. I still have it under glass. I have a wonderful collection with items signed by Ron and Penny. I also met his last born colt, Tinners Way, at Old Friends. To say it was a pilgrimage is not an exaggeration. It was magic. (PS..let's not forget Riva Ridge!)
