Female Crew of Battaeu Saves History in Virginia - Greg McQuade's "I Have a Story" - WTVR (8/16/22)
Making waves and breaking barriers on the James River. In his latest “I Have a Story” Greg McQuade introduces us to the women who banded together to help carry on a watery tradition in Virginia.
Members of the Lady's Slipper were the first all-female batteau crew during the annual James River Batteau Festival more than 30 years ago. The flat-bottomed batteau powered by pole and sheer muscle carried tobacco and other goods during the 18th and 19th centuries. As transportation improved the batteau faded away. But the crew of the Lady's Slipper is helping preserve an important part of Virginia history.

Ridiculous that somebody had the foresight to do this in 1992. This was peak. I wish they had done this for Holyoke too, that would be crazy to see in this quality in 1992. I loved those staggered walls at Babbage's so much. To me that setup with the monitors up front was iconic and they ruined it when they changed to Gamestop

From the very beginning, it’s clear we are witnessing someone filled with compassion, empathy, and a deep desire for truth. Lynda's words, "It does my heart good to see this is so well cared for," resonate with warmth. Having been friends with Lynda for nearly a decade, I can personally attest to her relentless pursuit of truth. This short segment fills me with pride to call Lynda my friend. I sincerely hope that a new gravestone will be crafted so that Uriah can receive the honor and dignity he deserves from the USA. Thank you, Lynda, for bringing light to those who cannot speak.

Not yall not mentioning that he was very selfish. Most abolitionists were upset he went to the press with his story because they wanted to use his method to free others. Also he was given the opportunity to buy his wife and children and he refused! Then went to England to marry a white woman. Not a hero..

I was visiting Claiborne Farm in 1973 shortly after "Big Red's" winning the Triple Crown. Penny Tweedy (at the time, became "Chenery") greeted me personally and asked if I would like to have a ride on Secretariat! No comment needed there, so skip ahead to me raising my left foot in reach of his saddle's stirrup when my dream was suddenly interrupted by, "Becky, get up! The alarm didn't go off!" True story. And I've yet to forgive the man who was my husband at the time.

As an Englishman with a love of horses , and no disrespect to the legendary "Secretariat"... No where near the class of the best horse ever , During his distinguished career, Red Rum established himself as the greatest horse to compete in the Grand National. No competitor in the history of the most prestigious meeting in the sport triumphed more than the bay gelding. His total of three victories at the event are yet to be beaten in the 40 years since his retirement. Elite horses have attempted to match his accomplishment, but not a single one has managed to win twice. Red Rum stands alone in the history of the Grand National, arguably the toughest of all tests for a racehorse.

Jackson Ward has always been a very special part of Richmond. Hard to explain to outsiders. As a small boy I grew up in "The Ward", "roaming the streets" as we young boys use to do in the 1950s..... Our schools were Baker Elementary, Benjamin Graves Junior High and Maggie L Walker. Some of our braver teachers talked about Mr. Mitchell: said he was a teacher and a brave militant man. They talked about his newspaper . We also heard of Marcus Gravey, W. E. B. Dubois and the great Paul Robeson. In those days the teachers use to put pictures of famous people above the blackboard-people we were expected to know. I even vaguely recall Mrs. Ida B. Well's picture. We also learned about Maggie Lena Walker at a very early age. So segregated schools were not all bad. All of our teachers were of African descent except for one German Jewish man who taught German. John Mitchell was a strong brother. No doubt about that!!
