My Grandfather was in number 1 commando, St Nazaire etc , he was one of the few who made it back through Spain then Gibraltar only 4/5 of them I think .
I suppose any first person information is dying away every day. As with another thread; my uncle was #4 Commando - Sword Beach. Extremely proud. He had his views on the French and Germans but I don't want to be confrontational with such a wide view. Obviously , he spent a lot of time in Germany and France and had anecdotes and statements. After 45 he spent time with the Nuremberg trials and wanted to stay in Germany; but my aunt wasn't so sure. He was demobbed at some point after and came back to to the UK. Later, every other week they'd visit (long story). Massive part of my life from very early. Miss him allot .
This is obviously a documentary film regarding WW11 commandos, but it is EXACTLY how my father portrayed the training he undertook at Achnacarry in Scotland in 1940/41, after which the commandos (him included) carried out raids on Norway in Operations Claymore and Archery. My father was also a "D" Day Veteran (Normandy, France, 6th June 1944). Terrific video and music accompaniment. Did you add the musical score, or was it part and parcel of the video? Thanks for uploading. I’ve now added it to my family’s history file.
I made the video out of respect and love to the Commandos members. I am a member of the Czech reenactment group rebuilding the No.3 (X) Troop, No.10 (Inter-Allied) Commando, whose core was Czechoslovak soldiers.
Yes, my old fella also went to Achnacarry, then to 43 Commando, North Africa, Vis, and was at Commachio. Knew Tom Hunter and was in the area when Hunter got his VC.
We, the Soldiers who served during the Cold War, and fought in Afghanistan and Iraq stood upon the Shoulders of GIANTS! Our training and gear is so much better than theirs. They paid in Blood, so that we could learn by sweat. Their Hard Lessons allowed so many of us to Survive, and Win!
@@cadge my grandad was no2 commando with his brother. Ended up in 4 troop. He was stationed in Vis for a while and did the salerno landings i beleive. I bet they crossed paths
When I go home to Scotland one of my first stops is at Spean Bridge Commando Monument, where I was taken to as a boy by my parents, one of the local areas back in the 60s we would do our summer camping at. Came across a photo of me and my two sisters sitting on the step of the monument when I was about 8 or 9, happy days. If. I take any Canadians with me on a Scotland trip, it’s Oban, Mull, Spean Bridge, Culloden, Glenfinnan, Edinburgh Castle.💂♂️🪖⛑️🏴🇨🇦
My dads older cousin was in the commandos in WW2. Whilst on leave he joined in an exercise with the Chelsea home guard, defending Chelsea or Battersea Bridge (can’t remember which) against the Fulham home guard. Fulham home guard were climbing the bridge on a rope and he cut it. Two fell into the Thames but were rescued. He was told to leave as was taking it all too seriously 😮
Les Tett Dorsetshire reg aged 18 No6 Commando winter of 43 Assigned by Lord Lovat to No 4 for Overlord plus Aged just 19. 6.6.44 (He had special "skills") LtCl Dawsons LCI Sword Red Queen Severely wounded 7/8 Survived .
When I stop the video at 1.23, the commando furthest from the camera is my father. Still trying to piece together what he did after Norway (Scissorsforce) and his commando course. Military record book is quite silent. I would like to know who holds the original of this film and whether there are any records of when and where the elements were filmed.

Wow what a great video.....Just found out the Telemark heroes were housed in Taighnabruach in Argyll...Balls of steel every last one of them.

As well trained as they are it honestly looks like they could not only contend with modern army's but win

This stupid music is overused in videos. Makes it all a bit cheesy

The world's best. Amazing footage. It did miss out the old footage of the Commandos training in the sea though.

The original green berets none of that shit that other people are claiming that the yanks where the first
The American Green Berets were good and even better today. I think the song and the John Mayne movie created a false image of them.
