I watched this lesson because I was not getting pretty colors, especially greens. I have a color wheel but am making some charts from your examples. This should be a must for every new painter. It has really helped me.
Thiiiisss lady knows so much!!!!! I’m blown away. Wow.
I am going to swatch and mix my paints to figure out my palette. Thank you so much - this will help us all save money, as we get to know and make friends with ALL our paints!
I'm so glad!
Thank you so much for all the work that goes into making a video like this. We appreciate it and we know and see it. 🤟💜🎨
Thank you so very much Cinnamon John & all the wonderful Moderators! Good weekend! 🥰🤗🖌
You too!
This video is a real eye opener for me. My frustration has always been color mixing. I painted along with you & saw for myself what I’ve been missing. This video is so valuable. Bless you both for your hard work! You are simply the BEST!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤

I concur with you, I never knew about these color mixes according to shade!
Great job! I finally came a cross a book many years ago that explained color bias in pigments. It's amazing how many books on color mixing never mention this very essential fact. One idea that might make your explanation easier to under stand is to point out that when 2 colors are mixed and one of both have complements in the mix the resulting color is muddier than may be intended. Ex.: Ultra Marine blue (red blue) & Cad. Red light. (orange red) That orange is the complement of blue and is what kills the color mixture right off.
Thank you for all your great videos!
Blue and Yellow don't make Green, Michael Wilcox?
Thank you cinnamon! You’re so awesome!
You are most welcome and Thank YOU 💗
Thank you! I am not a visual artist, and knew paints and light worked completely differently, and you explained it so well. Don't apologize for being academic! Information is wonderful!! Thanks!!!
Extremely helpful, thank you! When I first started, I remember tossing a fit trying to mix a purple. I simply couldn't understand it! Now I do, but your demonstration clarified things much better for me. 👏👏
Best explanation of colours I have found. Thank you.
Many years I read on the topic, first time I really understood it. Big thanks!
Thanks for the video!
So very welcome 🌷
Wow! This is SUPER helpful. I have it saved so I can go back and rewatch and take some notes. Suddenly a light bulb is going on for me. Thank you.

Awesome video. Learned something new. Adding white to see the bias more clearly, wow! That's so cool. Thank you so much Cinnamon and John. ❤️❤️❤️
Wow, you have opened up a new world for me. I was wondering why colours didn't mix like I was taught basics! Thank you
Thank You so much! I have just begun with pastel pencils and soft pastels! So I have no knowledge of Painting? Thanks for showing me what i am getting myself into! You explained it so well that I actually enjoyed learning it! Thank you!!!!!!!

Oh my goodness I am so happy that I found this video, I am a fairly new to painting and mixing😊I have so many bottles of paint it’s not even funny, then they dry out, so I am in the middle of switching to tube paints, thanks so much for the explanations you gave❤
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you soooo much…. This really really helps ❤❤❤God bless you both 🙏🏻
Très pertinente démonstration car utile pour éviter d’acheter trop de couleurs et réussir de belles combinaisons. Merci🌸🇫🇷
What a great lesson. Thank you for this detailed and specific explanations.
You're very welcome!
Awesome information thank you
Thank you for this video, it's totally gonna help me. Ironically before you mentioned Golden seperating the warm from cool comors, I was going to make my pages in my book (I got the same one you do) & then organize my paint draw as I have many brands and shades of color. I paint pour as well.
Glad it was helpful!
This was great! Thank you so much
Great teaching 🙏🎨 Thank you very much.
Thank you for sharing this video. I am a new artist (acrylic painting). I've been painting in pastel for 4 years and thought I'd try something different but I was running into trouble -- now I see WHY. Thank you SO much for helping me to understand colors and mixing. I love to paint red rock scenery (like Sedona) and I would love to know how to get the many different kinds of reds and oranges you see in the southwest. Like a purple-kind of orange, a bronzey-kind of orange, etc. (sorry for the spelling, had to guess on that one - lol). Question: Your Cad Red color that you use -- is that a cad red medium? Also, can you recommend a good brand of extender for acrylic paint? I live in Southern California and my acrylic paint dries up SO fast! It is crazy. Thank you.
This is a great explanation. You are knowledgeable and great at instruction.
Terrific lesson, thanks, Heather
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
This is a great color mixing video! Thank you!
Now I know why my water paintings never quite achieved the colours I was striving to get. Soo so well explained. Thankyou, now to remember & put it into practice.
You're awesome! Thank you for the information you provide to the world.
Great demo Cinnamon!! Thank you!!
Awesome lesson, Thank You.
nice ,Easy Color Mixing for beginners in acrylic Paint
🎉GREAT LESSON....THANK YOU.❤
I feel embarrassed because I had every yellow except lemon yellow and hanza yellow, so had to order and got Sennelier's lemon yellow Hansa , plus I had yellow oxide instead of yellow ochre, so I also ordered that in Sennelier...( your Amazon page was out of them so I got them at Jerry's!) So when they come in I will paint over the wrong colors in yellow! Even so, I don't think I have ever had a class so well informative...especially on the bias of yellow and green! You taught me things I never even thought about before but now I know and will follow my color wheel to the max. I also did the class on tints, tones and shades which was equally as important as this one! Color is so important to me and I am determined to do this! A million thank you's Cinnamon because you care!
Thank you for this video!!! I have been searching for this exact explanation!!!
Learned so much. Thank you!
This was very helpful as I have had a lot of difficulty in mixing colors. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this. I think Liquitex has both an ultramarine blue with red shade and an ultramarine with green shade.
Excellent lesson! Thank you!!❤❤
Glad you liked it!
Just AMAZING information, Cinnamon!!! Once again, you blew it out of the park!!
Wow, thank you!
Great video saved it as I need to learn the basics again
Excellant tutorial. 👏👏👏
Thank you so much.
OMG This video is SOOOOO informative! Thank you!
Thank you for taking the shark out of the water that I was swimming in, in coloring I was eaten alive by the sharks that were in the mix, it was a great😢 relief to get this understanding, and guarantee you that I'll reach the shore all in one piece. thank you again.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. awesome so helpful 💓
I really needed this information thank you so much
Thank you so much❤
Great video, thank you
Well what learned in school definitely is a lot different than why we learn as artist. In school they didn’t think about the artist tubes of paint in school all those primary colors are basically had something to do with the color spectrum of the rainbow not tubes of paint lol
Thank you, my question has been answered
Happy to help
this video/class was the BEST video I have seen on choosing a small pallette and why. I didn't understand the bias to blue or green. Thank you!! I subbed and can't wait to check out your other videos too. Love from British Columbia Canada :)
This is a truly awesome educational video, just absolutely wonderful information, thank you Cinnamon.👏🏻👏🏻🇧🇸🇧🇸🏝
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much, l now realise where I’ve been going wrong for so long
I wish I would have known this when I was still working. I spent a lot of money and time because of my ignorance. However, in my defense, in all of the art related continuing education I was involved in, THIS never came up. Color wheels - yes, but never THIS. ARG!!!! Going forward as a beginning canvas painter, now I know :
I cant wait to do this.
Yay!
Great instructive vid .thankyou so much Cinnamon and John
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you so much
Thanks!
You bet! Thank you for your support it means the world and does help us a lot
U got it
Thankyou Cinnamon! ❤
Thank You for the super chat and you are most welcome 💚
All I can say is amazing amazing 😻 an amazing
Gobs of thanks to you 💞
QUESTION: Golden sells in tubes, and in little bottles what's the difference??? Which one do I need to work on your projects? Michaels also sells Winsor & Newton what are your thoughts on that brand
Wow, thats why I’m struggling , thank you Both
Don’t apologize for being academic! 1) you can’t break the rules if you don’t know them and 2) I crave the theory and the WHY of painting. It makes it sooo much easier for me
I’m so glad you like this deeper dive into it. I love color it’s a lot of fun.
This is extremely helpful! I'm wanting to start with Liquitex basic acrylics. I can't find all the exact colors you recommend and I'm a little bit confused. Which colors would you recommend from liquitex basics?
You explaine the color bias so well. Many people believe that the primary ADDITIVE colors are Cadmium Red Light, Ultramarine Blue , and Hansa yellow medium. And the SUBTRACTIVE are Magenta, ( with a touch of blue in it>). Cyan (touch of green) , and yellow. Also Cyan makes a stronger green. And Ultramarine a stronger Violet. About 10 years ago I came across a book called " Blue and Green Do'nt make Green." By MICHAEL WILCOX. a color theorist. According to Wilcox. there are no PRIMARY colors. Because there is no paint as yet that are pure in color. The book as illustrations on how the reflected light reflect or absorbs a give n color. He suggested that only 6 colors are necessary to mix all the others. From then on I tested his theory and glad to tell you that I no longer use all the colors I used before. I thank you for your video.
If you love color theory and you seem to , be sure and add Bob Blast and The Color Nerd to your creators to check out. I am not sending you away I just think you might really enjoy them and also Cesar Cordova does some really epic color dives. Wilcox is a great tip for anyone reading your comment!
PS congratulations on your move ❤
LOVED this video. You mentioned there would be a mini book created. Can you post the link to it.
There is not a completed one yet. We are still working on it. 💕
Great class. I'm gonna have to re-listen several times to get it all. Thank you so much. Also...I GOT SOME TYPE OF WEIRD OIL LIKE STUFF OUT OF A PAINT TUBE WHEN i WENT TO PUT IT ON MY PALLATTE (Sennelier Acrylique Phthalo Green) WHAT IS THIS?
Sounds like your paint separated. You can try mixing it within the tube by squeezing it around or write to Sennelier for a new tube if it won't remix 💜
this is just fantastic information. thank you cinnamon, you are such a great fount of knowledge. you amaze me. I use sennelier abstract paint and I've been looking for phthalo green and lemon yellow hansa in these brands. do they actually make thes colours or do they call them something else? I always try to see if I can see the pigment number but I'm never sure if it's the right ones for those colours. hope you can help me. thank you again for being such a great tutor ♥️
YES the color you want with them is Cadmium Yellow Lemon Hue , and they have Phthalo Green too. My art store will be open by Mid week and we have both colors in stock store.theartsherpa.com/
IS THERE A COLOR THEORY BOOK AND POSTER YOU COULD RECOMMEND FOR US? Thank you so much for this video!
P.S. I enjoy when you get academic with us😁
Great video demo - but I use simply red, blue and yellow.for my own taste considering that everyone views colors differently.
My science class went over the primary colors of light and ink after I had taken years of art class. I tried to explain how different they were from paint primaries and my teacher just dismissed. It’s always bugged me, thank you for explaining, this is super helpful.
For example, Holbein sells the following "PRIMARY" colors in their Fluid Line :
Primary Magenta, Primary Cyan, Primary Yellow, Primary White, Primary Black
How would these compare to the colors mentioned in this video and why/when would you use these?
Those are some of the best primaries. You can do alot with them holbein is amazing. With those you could add warm red, Warm yellow and a red bias blue to create a split primary palette. But they are strong on their own too.
So, so, so very happy to see Lemon Yellow replacing Titanate Yellow. I could not find it anywhere and the subs for Titanate Yellow just didn't work for me. So excited.
YES that yellow had sooooo soooo sooo much issue. I love it but I love yall more we had to change for everyones peace of mind
Finally catching up to this one here. I try to do one of these a week but it ends up being more like one a month so I am missing a lot of them. I do what I can!
There is no pressure to keep up with the videos they will aways be there for you when you are ready
