I just bought a pair of Tan Strandmok with red dainite. When it arrived, I called AE customer service and asked about the leather. They said it is a calfskin leather just unburnished. The cap-toe and heel are slightly more burnished. He suggested using saddle soap for the leather upper, polishing cap-toe & heel, and slight polish in other areas if desired. So no, it's neither nubuck nor suede.
Thank you for sharing your experience with the Strandmok. I didnt know it fits larger to size. I was about order some this weekend in my regular size, but your video has likely saved me the heartbreak of owning an awesome shoe that doesn't fit well, not to mention the $$. I will definitely wait now until I can make trek to Dallas to get fit in the AE store. If you ever get to my part of Texas, look me up. At the very least, I owe you a beer!
Thanks for this review! I just ordered the Strandmok in 4099 Olive suede, and can’t wait to see them in person when they arrive. I’m secretly hoping they lean more grey than olive, so I can wear them with trouser combinations that I would normally pair with black shoes - so we’ll see.
Thanks for sharing! How versatile did you find the color to be? I know it's a neutral just like brow, but I ask because I have never work green in footwear.
Here is some inside info for you: The designation of the leather is Nubuck. The quality is MUCH higher than your other shoes, so comparing is pointless. The strandmoks use better leather. Also, if you enjoyed that model, you are in luck - - as there is a new version of the strandmok in a similar nubuck leather; this time in natural and chocolate brown. I recommend picking them up now while they’re on sale.
I hope you do more reviews! You're great at it!

Beautiful shoes. I should've bought a pair but who knew they would be discontinued. Hope they bring em back.
Even better than the olive strandmok was the olive neumok...phenomenal looking shoe
I want a pair of those so bad. Please bring them back AE!

@@chalkboardshoes Slate is a nice descriptor for these and yes, I am pleasantly pleased!
