You were most likely not loosening the bleeder screw enough. You can do this without a pressure bleeder. Although it would make the job faster/easier, it is not needed.
True we were reading that it takes about 1 to 2 full turns before stuff starts coming out which means it could be easier to get air in the system which would be a pain to get out. So this was the best method for us!
