I wonder if George R.R Martin researched Navajo folklore when he came up with skinwalkers (or as they're better known as "wargs") in the A Song of Ice and Fire books?
In order to become a Skinwalker, the Navajo has to sacrifice the person they love most in the world.
Well that would make sense with my idea that this may have been the natives description of some kind of psychopathy.
Their eyes blacken over & their animalistic rage takes over~then they’re back to hidden behind their mask with a flashy smile in an instant. The fear this instills when experienced, I definitely agree with the descriptive terms of shapeshifter & skinwalker!

So I’ve been doing research on Skin Walkers for a book I’m wanting to write. I’m curious if anyone more familiar with them has an answer to my question.
Is there an alias that people like to use to not say Skinwalker? I know the word is taboo so I want to try and be respectful and use a place holder name if there is one.
My second question is more so about the pelts they use to change into different animals. Does it strictly have to be an animal? What’s stopping them from hypothetically using the skin of another person or another creature of folklore?
