- Here's the next Three-For-All lesson with 3 Zakk Wylde Licks From 1988.
Zakk Wylde is a ferocious guitarist and when he hit the scene alongside Ozzy with 'No Rest For The Wicked',' Zakk proved to the world that he was a monstrously talented guitarist with that single album.
Since that time he's appeared on several Ozzy albums, along with creating his own projects Black Label Society, Pride & Glory, the Book of Shadows albums, and more recently - Zakk Sabbath.
He's also appeared on a number of other releases and worked with a vast assortment of groups, projects, and artists.
This lesson focuses on three licks from his live solo in 1988, when he was swinging at the fences and proving himself to the fans on his first tour with Ozzy. These licks include a unique tapped bending idea, a whole-tone scale run that closes with a series of Rhoads-approved b5 climbing arpeggios, and a sample of his wicked stretch pentatonic phrasing.

"The Wizards of Ozz"??? Dude, that is freakin brilliant. I seriously need to hunt down that magazine but what a clever title to give to Ozzy's arsenal of guitarists. That would be a fantastic title for a book about the history of the men behind Ozzy's career. Well played.
Zakke is one of my favorites. I did security at The Showbox in Seattle and I got to meet him and get a pick with BLS. He was super cool to his fans at the meet and greet. At that same show he went into the audience and played his solo. I was one of the security guards that escorted him through the crowd. I got to watch his whole solo like 2 ft away from him, it was awesome!
His vibrato is off the charts!!! I could go on and on about Zak

Ozzy at the new haven coliseum was my very first concert. Anthrax opened. Great show.
My favorite was an album called Just Say Ozzy. It was live with 5 or 6 songs. That is the greatest version of Shot in the Dark ever.
That stretchy pentatonic lick -- I definitely heard it as 2 notes per string until you showed the correct way to play it.

I'm 40, the first time I saw Zakk live was when I was 15. It was the day before I saw Zakk the second time.
The night before OzzFest Zakk called around town and found a small venue, then he called the local radio station and had them promote it. I spent $1.01 on a ticket and saw Zakk play most of BLS Sonic Brew live, as well as some tunes from Stronger Than Death before its release.
The next day I saw him play with Ozzy.
One of my favorite guitarists of all time.

Hey gang - I made a typo with my mouth in this lesson.
Be sure you tap the 21st fret during the tapping lick (Lick #1).
Don't worry - the notation/tab is written correctly. I have no idea why I said: "22nd fret."

yea man,i see him as a randy rhoads wanna be most of the time and i think he wouldve been better off not picking up where randy left off adn maybe doign new things,instead he takes a page out of everyones book and adds it to randys technique
I don't see him that way at all.
I see him as a (once upon a time) kid that loved and respected Randy Rhoads/Black Sabbath and was already a HUGE fan of Ozzy's music. He submitted his audition/cassette to Ozzy and magically got that respected gig in 1987 when he was barely 20 years old.
I love Randy and Jake, but I also respect Zakk and always have.
In my opinion, I felt he was the best replacement for Jake E. Lee at that time and he really gave Ozzy's fans what they wanted.
Yeah, he was emulating Randy Rhoads (BIG time), but that was intentional, mainly because he was already a huge fan and knew those songs/licks.
Besides...he was playing guitar in Ozzy's band, so he'd better be able to play like Randy/Jake.
I think it was a logical choice and his playing suited Ozzy's music perfectly (at the time).
Plus he and Dimebag were good friends, so that adds to my level of respect for him.
Everyone has different tastes and hears/listens to music differently.

I think the Pride & Glory album was incredible!! Not a big fan of his BLS stuff, but that P&G disc was killer!

I was at this show, New Haven Coliseum, December 1988, it was Ozzy's 40th birthday, and they brought a cake for him on stage. The next day I heard that someone died falling from the top of the parking garage 140 ft, right before the show. The explosion you hear in this clip was an M80 or maybe something bigger, scared the shit out of me! Later that week I bought this entire bootleg video at an underground record store, still have it!

ah the New Haven Coliseum...saw my first show there: KISS with Judas Priest (on their first USA tour) as the opener...1979 (I was 12 yrs old). Saw many other shows there over the years (RUSH, Megadeth, Alice Cooper, etc etc) until it finally got torn down sometime in the 90's I think. Good times! Great lesson, Zakk is a freakin maniac! What a monster player!
Man, I love your channel. Love the discussion! We probably grew up the same era. Yes, "No Rest For the Wicked" came out swinging starting from the opening track Miracle Man. Zakk's heavy guitar tone and pinch harmonics just stood apart from the 80's drums and bass mix during that time.

I saw zak in 1988 just before no rest for the wicked came out. Noone knew anything about him and he looked like a skinny little hair metal dude. He blew us away that night in Newcastle's mayfair. Ozzy was so drunk he couldn't stand up. I vividly remember zakks solo spot. Also remember the support was a local kid aged about ten, called thomas mcrocklin who played like vai... He is on youtube now. Amazing

I love just hearing a few notes of Vito Brattas' playing! Vito and Nuno are the two guys who send me running to my guitar to practice after hearing just a few notes :-)
Zakk's stretch pentatonic riff was a fusion of E minor pentatonic shape one on the 12th fret and the 5th shape from the 9th fret.

Yeah, No Rest For The Wicked SLAYS.
From start to finish, Zakk is simply on fire and even the songs that aren't as great still have some wicked guitar parts/riffs/ideas.
I think Fire in the Sky and Bloodbath in Paradise are my favorites from that one, but there are several others that rock too.

Man that stretch pentatonic lick is crazy!
Yeah, those are pretty crazy at first.
Just be sure to go slow and if you need to, move the fingering/shape higher up the fretboard (so the notes are a little closer together) and then you can slowly move it down the neck to lower positions with a larger stretch once you get a feel for it.

David - Loving this - especially the stretch pentatonic thing - Steve Vai used that in the challenge solo in Crossroads - That solo !!!! OMG a lot of amazing licks to disect in that maybe fodder for a 3 licks thing :-)

The end of that Crossroads movie is literally loaded with some amazing licks, phrases, and ideas. I mean the Paganini areas are splendid and seem to get most of the attention, but pretty much everything that Vai recorded guitar-wise for that area of the film was spectacular, and all of those Ry Cooder slide licks throughout the entire movie are second-to-none.
I think I should put something together like that surrounding Crossroads, but just focus on mining the cool licks and ideas floating around.

Those were awesome licks David! I too find No Rest For The Wicked to be some of Ozzy and Zakk's best material. Miracle Man, Fire In The Sky, Hero (hidden track) and my all time favorite Crazy Babies. I agree Zakk came out swinging to make a name for himself on that album.

It's not that his other music isn't good (it IS), but there was just something extra fiery about his playing on that album.
I'm sure he felt pressure coming from everywhere and really wanted to knock it out of the park - which he totally did!

Awesome lesson here Dave!! No Rest was a game changer for me.....it really had a "Diary" vibe to it, and i felt Ozzy was finally back in business (no disrespect to Jake). Keep up the great work buddy :)
I used to think that Zakk was just an overrated guitarist that makes generic metal with pinch harmonics every other note...until I took a deep dive on No More Tears and Ozzmosis, The solos on the tracks No More Tears and See you on the Other Side while easy are so fucking beautiful and I absolutely love love love the small intro solo on the track Road to Nowhere, he puts so much feeling and soul into his writing and I love it! See you on the Other Side's solo is my #2 solo of all time, I'm sorry but I don't think anyone will ever top Randy Rhoads solo on Goodbye to Romance, that will always be my #1 solo to play.

I've always been a Jake fan above all, but I have to give credit to Zakk for holding his own with a very tough gig. I've seen Ozzy live with Jake three times, and with Zakk several times as well. Both are great, and both are very different. Zakk had to compete not only with Jake and Randy but with other plays who made a big mark like Yngwie and the rising star Paul Gilbert. While firing Jake was a bad move on the part of Ozzy, Inc, hiring Zakk was a good move. When I saw Jake and then Zakk live it told me how good I had to be if I wanted even the slightest chance of making my mark as a guitarist. It made me try a whole lot harder.

Jake e Lee is iconic 😁🤘👍❤️ ok had a learn to burn cassette tapes lesson from the 80s bought out of the back of a guitar magazine and you had to write out the tabs the guy read off for you to write down.
Zakk is the man. He for sure had the 80s image. I am guessing that came from Ozzys wife. Great player though and all around nice guy too. .

I liked zakks tone back then, but now everyone seems to have that same tone/ wah-wah solos & it's getting stale. Along with his pinch harmonic overkill, I'll stick to the KIX tone on "Blow My Fuse". That tone makes my arm hairs stand up.

No doubt No Rest For the Wicked kicked major ass. And talk about mind blown when you found the hidden best track on the cassette "Hero". Miracle Man to me matches the crazy things George Lynch did with F# minor rhythms on almost any Dokken or Lynch Mob recording. Zakk's rhythms are just as amazing. First of all, grear video and overall great content, but I'm pretty sure Zakk would have never played Lick 3 in your video the way you teach it. You could hear the difference in sound between straight alternate picking (what Zakk is doing) and combining it with legato (what you are doing). Zakk is playing 2 notes on each of 2 strings and then sequencing this pattern down the pentatonic scale using straight alternate picking with Berserker Mode turned on :D
Anyway sorry for this comment, I'm not a hater, just want to help shine some light on this thing. Cheers!
I’ve been trying to work out how he picks this sequence. I’ve seen it tabbed in some of his solos. Does it start on an upstroke and then downstroke on the B?
@@timhet200 Simply Down-Up 2 notes on E, then Down-Up on B and repeat as many as you want, that's it. Good old alternate picking pattern.
