  • WILLPOWER, DISCIPLINE AND BINGE EATING - So many people who struggle with compulsive eating think they know how to control eating habits and just believe that they have no willpower.
In this video I offer a different perspective to help you understand the psychology of self control when it comes to stopping binge eating. If you are someone who believes the answer to overcoming those binges simply lies in simply having more willpower and discipline, this one's for you!

I agree. I have unfollowed all the other's and am listening here exclusively. Each video really hits home for me and I already mentally feel so much better.

Love the perspective of self-discipline as self-remembering. I definitely tend to forget myself and I think cultivating this perspective will be really helpful!

I have found that most of the folks I have met who have "iron will" lack a lot of empathy for others. A lot of them came from abusive backgrounds. I am not sure that I would call them healthy. I have discipline for some things and not for others. It is a matter of finding what works for you, and the advice here is certainly worth considering.

I have been in "Eating Disorder" therapy for 3y and I have felt the need for information related to my specific ED (since most patients in my service suffer from anorexia or bulimia). I thank you for making this info available publically and for free.
I'm really excited to take my time and focus my recovery with info less general and more pertinent.

Thank you. Your gentle and calming demeanor is really nice. Learning to be good and nice to myself (in my thinking) feels so healing. I gave myself permission (talking to myself) to have any kind of food that I felt like having when hungry (because it's a trigger to think of never having certain things again or that it's "bad" to eat them) and I suddenly feel much calmer/un-panicked about it and feel no need to shovel food in after saying it to myself. For right now it's a mantra and has been freeing. I hope this makes sense.

What happens when you remember what you wanted and you’re self aware in the moment that you’re supposed to “eat the salad” but you STILL chose to eat the bad food ???

I think many of us have an inner rebel where the moment we 'should' ourselves (I'm 'supposed' to eat the salad) that part resists being told what to do.
The therapy we would think about this as parts work - we have different parts inside us who want and need different things, which means the skill is learning to manage inner conflict.
In your situation it sounds like part of you thinks you should have the salad because that's the 'healthy' and 'right' thing to do. Another part wants to be free to make food choices and enjoy delicious food. You are the one who is able to listen and observe these parts. Problem is that many people get into a fight with the part of them they don't like (the part that doesn't want the salad) and so they start a war with themselves.
