I've restarted my island once... and the process for me to move my items to a friend's island was easy but tedious. The process of trying to get my items back from that friend was also tedious, cataloging was painful until another friend said they have a treasure island I can visit, and collecting the diys was also very, very painful... I wouldn't do it again until I had a guaranteed way to keep my favorite items, get a fast method to catalog and find the diys faster... RUclipsr have it easier, because of their fans. And while the community is nice and helpful with each other, it's nothing like having 50k people offering items and bells.

Maybe its because I have played the series for years even before anch, that I always tell my friends that play this game to not restart. I have restarted my town so many times on new leaf and it never felt the same as the first time starting the game in a new town. The magical moment of the first town and the memories of it are gone on the new one and I ended up missing the old one and regretting for restarting
I have played New Horizon since launch and even tho I have some problems with the layout. I like to have these problems as part of the island, its like the islands feauture. and challenge myself to do the things I want with the limits I have.
Then again my play style is very different to new animal crossing players. I think typically old ac players play the game very casually as like living a second life, compared to new players who see it as a game where you get time travel so you can decorate the island fast and then go on to the next one.
There isin't a right or wrong way to play the game its really just comes down to fact that what kind of a animal crossing player are you and what you think is important and what make you enjoy the game. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. :D

Just anecdotally I wanted to share my experience having done both. So on my first plauthrough of ACNH I flattened my island because I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with it, and I thought a blank canvas would give me inspiration. The process was so tedious and boring that when I got done, I was totally burned out and really bummed tbh. I didn't have any idea for what I wanted to do, and now my island was totally empty and boring, and it made me quit the game. I didnt have any inspiration, instead i just had a bunch of choice paralysis. I then restarted a few months later, and i realized I actually really enjoy the early game up to the point where you get the end credits with KK. I ended up not progressing much past that point on that build, and fell off again, but I had much more fun. Eventually i restarted again, and I planned to get more into island design, but I was determined not to terraform at all since I had such a bad experience with it the first time. This build didn't really go anywhere, and I abandoned it until my girlfriend decided she wanted to try animal crossing. We reset together, and she loved it. Eventually she bought her own switch lite, we transferred the island to her new switch, and I restarted for the fourth time.
I would definitely recommend restarting over flattening to newer players who are kind of frustrated with how their island looks or aren't having fun anymore. I think the early game is the most fun as far as gameplay loops go, and its easy in the beginning to not worry so much about how your island looks and just enjoy things like fishing, swimming, and bug catching. However, if you like your island, your still having fun with the game, but you are considering flattening, I do have a different piece of advice. Don't flatten your entire island, ever. Only use terraforming if you have a specific project in mind, and try to do it in the smallest chunks possible. Draw boundaries if you have to, and only allow yourself to do a certain amount of terraforming in one day. This will avoid burn out, and working on your project will become more of a natural daily activity like shaking trees or hitting rocks than one massive project you have to complete in one go. I also highly recommend using your island's natural terrain to inspire your designs. I would advocate against completely removing any ponds or rivers, and just modify them to fit your space a little better. The same goes for cliffs. If you want to do a raised neighborhood, or a sunken areas, think about where that can be that would take the least amount of work. Work with your natural terrain instead of against it. In the past my residential neighborhood areas have been very symmetrical and organized, but they felt totally boring and uninspired. This time around I placed my houses more organically based on the space I had without doing massive amounts of terraforming, and it looks so much better. It takes up a bit more space than a compact and organized neighborhood build, but it's been more fun to decorate and build pathing for. Decorating is also a lot more fun for me than just terraforming, so being able to focus on that is huge pro of this approach imo.

A solution to a few things on the restarting front, they just require a very kind friend to aid you!
    1) you can store your items, NMTs, bells etc for your new island on a friends island
    2) you can house your fav villagers from your old island on a friends island by you both using the leaving bubble technique - the friend must have an empty plot and you must have your fav villager leaving so they can invite them to theres, that way they dont get voided and you can reinvite them on your new island!
    3) You can stockpile spare diys for your new island on a friends island.

I'm that one guy who never flattens the island. I don't know why but even if my island's layout just looks so weird and a bit ugly, I still love it. I terraform a little bit, but make sure to keep what I think made the layout unique. Like, there's a whole river dividing the town hall, airport, etc, from everything else. Instead of getting rid of it, I just made it bigger and added lotsa waterfalls and flowers to make it look prettier. Not to mention how funny it is to add to the lore to my island that the terraformed area is the civilized part of the island, while the other side that's blocked off is uncharted territory of who knows what.

    I think what it really comes down to is why you want a fresh start. If you've finished a build and you're ready to move on to a new creative project, resetting seems to be the way to go. If you're just not happy with the way that things are turning out and you want to try something different, I really think flattening is worth it. That's what I did and I have no regrets, although I do still have some pictures of the areas of my old island that I was happy with, and I even kept a couple little areas the same. To be honest I didn't really understand the benefits of resetting until watching this video, but if the main thing you enjoy in New Horizons is making whole town builds then it definitely makes sense that you'd want to do that in a way that preserves your old builds where you can visit them, and doesn't require you to have extra copies of the game. n_n;

I'm in a pretty huge dilemma right now, trying to make this decision. So, the thing is, I hate my island layout, I've kind of destroyed it with flattening (like it's completely barren), and most of all, I really just want to my name. But the idea of losing all of the progress I've made is haunting me. I've nearly completed my museum, spent literal hours on end, farming for bells and trying to get dreamies, I just don't want to lose everything. Honestly, I probably wouldn't even be stressing over it this much if I could just change my name. But the fact that you have to create an entirely new save, and give up literally everything you've spent the last year and a half building up, just... aaaaghghghghhh
    I feel like I'm drowning....

I think it's valid to mention that if you play with friends, you can bring some of your stuff from your island to their island to hold for you before you restart. I've done that so I dont lose absolutely everything. It helps with bells and NMT especially to keep them, as well as tools. And if there's a villager you really love and your friend is willing, you can have them keep that villager for you until you're ready for them. So restarting isnt as bad that way and I always prefer it to flattening because I'm lazy and I want my old islands saved. Thanks for the great video Lex!

This may sound weird but I ended up with 2 switch lites, so I gave one to my husband. He rarely ever plays it so I bought a 2nd game cartridge. I then spent almost 3 days moving all of my "I wanted to keep" items to his island, and back to my new island. And enjoyed restarting my island again. I enjoyed the process of getting my islanders, having KK slider show up again and accumulating recipes. It was easier the 2nd time around and I still had all of the fruit and a few repeated recipes to start with also I had a lot of the kk songs and I can purchase things from his island like the different colors of beach chairs and phone boxes. So if you have a trusted friend you can move your bells, tickets, holiday items, and colorways to that island and retrieve them after you restart your island. Its expensive to purchase a whole new system and cartridge but it can ne done with the help of a friend and they will also be able to catalog colorways they don't have.

it’s a great vid that goes right to importants points! Honestly, they’re rare so gratz !! 😊
As for the island, I went with the flow. Each time before putting a building or anything else, I imagined what it will look like and what I would do around it after. It’s my first Animal Crossing game, so I didn’t know anything about the gameplay. I feel lucky that I did what I did because the game went smoothly and I don’t need to restart at all. The important thing that the creators should think about is to be able to have multiple saving slots like other games like these. Like this, you would be able to restart the game without losing your old island if you want to play with it again. 😊 Awesome game and completely addictive too 🤣 No regrets at all!! 😁

I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH AND TELL YOU HOW GRATEFUL I AM TO THE FACT/IDEA THAT YOU INTRODUCED ME TO BEING ABLE TO KEEP YOUR OLD ISLAND AS A DREAM ADDRESS !!!!!!!’ The majority of the reason(s) I don’t want to restart is that I don’t want to leave my babies, and also I don’t want to lose my things. BUT, I might be able to make my current island to where I have every of my favorite items and clothing on display in a very pleasant way so that the reason I wanted to collect those things in the first place is still preserved. Does that make sense ? I had a hard time paying attention to my wording as I typed that out because I didn’t want to forget what I wanted to say. So, I think I’m going to take some time, and just DECORATE my island the way it is, in my dream way for the island I have, minimal additional terra-forming, and have that saved as a Dream Address. Yeah. I think I’m gonna do that. Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you. By the way - the reasons I WANT to restart - get a chance to only use amiibos to have only my dreamies, and I’m kind of bored of my island layout and feel l could do SO MUCH MORE if I could restart. Also, I looooove fishing in the game, but I hate how I literally have 1 or 2 NEW fish that I haven’t found before, so it would be fun to have it be new for my character again.

I restarted bc I have an ambitious project in mind that required a new name and more importantly, the airport and resident services to move, but restarting probably was worse for my burnout than the three times I flattened. Now that I've finally got terraforming again, that flame is starting to come back, but it legit took me almost a month to get terraforming bc I just didn't want to work on the tedious process of building back up. Flattening was so much easier for me bc I would put on a show I wanted to binge and could watch it easily while I did the boring work and made it go by so fast. I'm really glad I restarted now since I can get to work on a passion project though.

I highly doubt this happened. Islands take time to make. Most people have around 300+ hours just for one island. With the amount of burnout people get for 1 island I can’t even imagine 15. Only possible explanations are:
      - The islands didn’t have much time put into them
      - You have the power to make 15 islands with minimal or no burnout which I highly doubt
      - You lied.
Not saying it isn’t possible, but there’s an extremely high chance this a lie.
Even harder to believe because the updates are just repeats of last year with a minimal amount of new stuff now.
I don’t really care if this is a joke, cause it’s not a very good one if it is.

But since that's not likely going to be an option, just bringing it all to a friend's island is the only way to do that. Unfortunately it would take forever to make the multiple trips.
I currently have never restarted, but I've just flattened my island the other day to account for farming. Everything else is basically the same, just moved around to make room or reimagine a given area now that it's in the new location. Though I'll still leave some houses on the beach in case I decide to swap in some new villagers and it calls for layout changes. I won't fully know until I get the update.
