Hey guys, I know everybody has said the same thing, hit the live version. Let me say it in absolute context. Unless you were with REO in 1973, there's a good chance, even if you're a huge REO fan, that you've never even heard the studio version but for catching it on reaction channels when the reactors grab it. If you can believe it, the vocalist here, Mike Murphy, does not have a Wikipedia page :). Anyway, the live version, off "You Get What You Play For" - OMG, I'm listening to it now - has two or three times, or 10 times, the energy, it has Kevin Cronin on vocals, who's still REO's lead singer. It's just not close. Perhaps the only song in which the studio and live is even more mismatched is Cheap Trick's "I Want You To Want Me." Neither studio version should ever, ever, ever be heard. That you guys enjoyed it anyway only means you should come right back with the live one.

This, the original studio version featuring a new singer (Mike Murphy) after the original singer (Kevin Cronin) had left the band. Then, there is a live version featuring Kevin after he had returned to the band, and THAT version was a massive radio hit. Finally, there is a studio version with Kevin doing the vocals. Of the 3 versions, the live version with Kevin is easily the best. One of the few songs where the live version is better, but the 70s was the decade where a lot of that happened (such as Do You Feel Like I Do by Peter Frampton, and I Want You To Want Me by Cheap Trick, among other songs/artists.) ~Be Blessed

I have a fun connection to REO since we kind of grew up together. They were just getting started and were playing any gig they could get in the Illinois/southern Wisconsin region. in 1971 they played for my HS homecoming dance (my brother did the lighting). A couple of years later, they were playing larger venues and in 1975 I saw them at my University. I graduated and moved to Milwaukee and REO hit the big time. I saw them several times as headliners at Summerfest.

Hey Andy! If you give this an A+, you're going to have to create a whole new grading system when you hear the live version. Live is an S++ comparatively speaking. The energy is off the charts. Kevin Cronin takes over the vocals and begins with him yelling to the audience "Last song people!" It's one of the best live recordings ever. The one you played is like a demo copy for the real thing.

This song, which is still the show closer for REO, is fondly remembered by us Coloradans who know that it was written after an REO show up at Tulagi Bar up in Boulder. Tulagi was a popular bar near the CU campus and the students liked to drink beer and party and see the best bands there. On their way to their next gig REO got lost and snowed in (which happens often enough in Colorado) and Gary Richrath, the guitar player, wrote this song.

I’m kind of a purist about wanting the studio versions of songs, but this is one that should be the live version. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever heard this studio version even though I’m very familiar with the song. Another that you should do live is the Little Feat performance of “Dixie Chicken/Tripe Face Boogie” from Waiting For Columbus. All 16:04 of it. Thanks A&A!!

The singer everyone recognizes them for ( Kevin Cronin), left during the making of this album, and was asked to join again in 1976, just 3 years later. He was on the original album cover and 1st mix, he was airbrushed out and replaced before printing. There is a late 70s live version with Kevin, that's better than this studio mix. Somewhere there is a whole album demo with him singing, a few songs with him singing have been released

And this is your introduction to the late, GREAT Gary Richrath, voted the Most Underrated Guitarist of All Time. (It was close between him and Mark Knopfler, but Knopfler is an "I knew he was great but not THIS great" vote, whereas Gary was an "really, the guy from REO? Huh" thing.)
REO struggled through six albums of poor sales and changing vocalists. They swapped through three different singers and were in danger of getting released from their deal, but they had built a reputation as a strong live band and so were allowed to put out the double-live album "You Get What You Play For" in 1977, and they weren't in danger of getting cut after that. Seriously, just do the whole damn album. It is THAT good. Up there with The Who's "Live at Leeds" and Queen's "Live Killers" for the only live albums I consider a must-have.
Part of the reason they kill live is because Gary gets to show his stuff, but also because drummer Alan Gratzer never lets the energy falter; he keeps the band driving all show long. (Gratzer retired in 1987. His successor, Brian Hitt, is pretty good, but you can hear moments when the sound gets languid in later shows. That never happened with Gratzer at the controls.)
The singer on the live album (the singer listeners are most familiar with) is Kevin Cronin, who replaced Terry Luttrell (who walked when the debut album stiffed), recorded the second album, but was fired during the sessions for the third album (where this song comes from) and only brought back later because the six-album deal was almost up and the label thought he was a better stage performer than Mike Murphy (heard here) and a more prolific songwriter. (Gary Richrath was writing most of the songs, including this, but he couldn't do it all alone.). So things clicked with Cronin the second time around and the live album was great and the next two albums were good (and the live shows just got better)…but the band was known for partying on the road and the wives found out and found interests of their own and keyboardist Neil Doughty (co-founder with Gratzer) came home to a letter where his wife said she was leaving with the band's drug connection, and despite Neil quipping "damn, I'm going to miss that guy", he had a nervous collapse and the band had to take time off while Neil healed. And Kevin Cronin used that space to assert himself and take more control of the music, and as Kevin was never truly a rocker (he'd been a folk singer), this led to the very different 1980s sound. Commercially successful, yes, but hardly the same, IMO.
Although the live shows are still pretty decent until Gratzer retires in '1987 and Kevin fires Gary in 1989. After that…the best I can say about Gary's replacement, Dave Amato, is that he's adequate. But I'm not listening to those '80s songs for adequate.
I will give the band props for keeping on, though. It's now been 33 years since they brought in Amato in Gary's place, and they haven't ever broken up or retired or even had any further personnel changes. Durability is nice…but I prefer to hear them at their best.
Which as I say, is live. Whether it's the live album or other shows (there are multiple Don Kirshner and Midnight Special appearances on YT, plus the Rockpalast [German TV] concert from '79), it's a treat. Truly. Treat yourself. Just start the live album with "Like You Do" and work your way to "Golden Country" at the end. Those are perhaps my two favorites, but it's all good.
