  • Christmas is around the corner, and you know what that means? Yep, time to buy more Nintendo products. Is the new Game and Watch from Nintendo worth your money? Does anyone care what I think about it? Probably not, but I bought it anyway, so here's my thoughts on it.

I love how it fits inside the chest pocket of my dress shirt to the fancy christmas parties at our engineering firm. Like my new age pocket watch. Playing it drunk on a swordless NES run in a cab on the way home was great.

Your content so far is awesome. Take your time. I'll watch it for sure. Your other 2 Zelda reviews were spot on and I enjoyed every second. Btw just beat Zelda 2 for the first time in my life and I played it when Nintendo released it. I found myself ventering back to classics during 2020 and I bought a GC and the collector's edition of Zelda because I didn't want to wait for a Switch port of Ocarina. Could care less about MM and WW. I wish this disc had Link to the Past but I played that on the Switch and it was wonderful. Thank you for your content, keep it up!

A friend of mine got one and I played a little bit of Vermin on it today, I immediately noticed how good the D-Pad felt. I personally am not too bugged by small screens since I do usually prefer portability over size, but to each their own.
Excited to compare your feelings to my frustration for LTTP!

You know, I've never had issues reading text when using my Switch portably. Everything usually seems a decent size, definitely leagues better than a Wii game, Puzzle Quest, I played years ago when my vision was 100% flawless. My TV was not small, but the text looked like a single line was only 4 pixels high, like what was I supposed to play the game on. I've always thought text issues were less the fault of hardware than the fault of terrible game design and zero QA testing.

I wonder if it’s even possible to make a game that looks great in both handheld and tv mode? From what I’ve noticed when playing my GameBoy games on a television, the sprites always look way too big. It’s playable, but a bit goofy; for 3D games, I’m sure it’s even harder to make something look good on a handheld. I think developers just have to pick a street, and since almost no Switch owners play exclusively in handheld mode (unless they own the Lite), it makes sense to just make a game for TV play. An interesting conundrum, to be sure, and not one that’s simple to solve.

@@octorokreviews I think super anime, especially cell shaded games look pretty good at all sizes. I do see a lot of artifacting and sharpness in portable mode for realistic games though and as a graphic deisgner, I know why; it's a choice between making things blurry with anti-aliasing or jagged without. Hopefully, the Super Switch or whatever Nintendo has for 10th gen has a 1080 or better yet 1440 screen with no bezel and that helps games look good regardless of what mode.

@@octorokreviews Thanks for making this video! I now know I don't want one of these. [I prefer Link's Awakening DX]
I feel ya on the tiny display. Link's Awakening [DX] is my favorite Zelda game. However, I have never enjoyed emulating it unless I was using a PSP or something, mostly for the same reason you mention. The elements are too large, including the HUD.
The example I normally use for this [yes, this is a recurring conversation for me=] is Ridge Racer on PSP. Played on a PSVita vs a PSTV, the HUD elements are definitely designed for a portable device, and don't translate as well on a bigger display. The gauges and map take up entirely too much of the screen. I end up playing with the HUD turned off most of the time, due to this. Otherwise that game translates quite well!
I will say, though, that the remake of Link's Awakening on Switch did a decent job of working both portable and docked display into their design.

Yep, that’s a pretty fair take on way the GameBoy HUD translates to larger screens. As far as DX goes, the 3DS is my preferred device to play it on. I agree with you that’s it’s one of the best Zelda games, by the by; I think I made it obvious in the video, but I really enjoy Link’s Awakening. Can’t wait to get to that review :)

@@octorokreviews I look forward to that video! My only complaint was that they fixed the chicken/boomerang tactic, which was probably unintended anway. I admit I barely touched the dungeon builder thing, though. Too limited for my taste.

I don't really mind the small screen too much to be honest. Plus, I legit just love having this thing as a clock to keep on my desk lol

And there are cheats for every game by long pressing the a button before starting a new file.
