  • Hey Aquamigos! I just wanted to explain the problem that I had with my koi pond's Aquadyne Rino bottom drain. It ended up not being that big of a deal and everything is going to be ok, but let me know what you guys think about this issue.

    I'm glad you checked that out and found out that wasn't a problem caused by yourself. Let's hope the company fix this thread issue in the future because I believe if you were using a pump fed drain the problem could be bigger. #Aquamigos #mybelizeanadventures

      Thanks Aquamigo! and the funny thing is that I didn't really get the feeling that Aquadyne is planning on fixing this problem in the future. It's just kind of like "it is what it is" haha

    I always heard that anything with threads that are made to work with water are always tapered to create a tighter/waterproof seal. Dunno, just what i heard

    • @TobiasHolenstein
      @TobiasHolenstein  Год назад

      Yeah i believe that is true, because I asked the Play it koi rep if I could trim the top of the stem slightly (where the threading is) to compensate for the lopsidedness and he told me not to do that because the threadings are not the same size all the way down. The threading on the lid however is warped in a way where it doesn't match up to the stem anymore

    Sorry to hear this Aquamigos, that is not good manufacturing, I think you could end up with fish in your filter, I have had to put a grating to the entry of my Nexus, because I occasionally get small fish go into bottom drain, the grating stops them going all the way into the filter, I have put 3 fish this month back into the pond, I have a very low flow rate, and the smaller fish can not manage to swim back against the flow, so I think you will have to keep a very close eye on your filter, I check mine morning and evening, just in case another fish has made its way up from bottom drain, best wishes, Tony😀

    • @TobiasHolenstein
      @TobiasHolenstein  Год назад +1

      Thanks for the advice Tony! I will keep that in mind. I think the first stage of my filtration is going to be a small settlement tank, so I'm thinking the fish will end up in there and then I can fish them out

    Honestly you dont have to worry about your fish going in the drain. I thought the same thing, but after parts of hyacinth getting trapped around my drain i have opened up the gap way ore and I havealwys had tons of small fish and Ive only had maybe 3 end up in the sieve after 10 years. WHen their near the drain and the suction pull sthem they will swim away. Im realizing you just answered that yourself, but you should make sure to have a knife valve between the drain and your next filter/pump. Also you should definitely try to hit minimum 3000 gph because if you dont flow enough through the drain line sediment will collect in there. I wish I would have added a t right before my sieve to act as a blow out looking back. Also to increase drain line flow you want to have as minimal distance and turns (long sweeping 90s if a must) betwee the drain and your mechanical filter to maximize gravity flow. I dont know i youve already setup your filter system but I would highly recommend a cetus sieve, It eliminates the need for a settlement chamber, and you can pump directly to your bio filter after and it has a very small footprint.

      Thank you for the advice! I haven't set up my filtration system yet, but I'm looking into different options. I was thinking of doing a small settlement tank just incase some fish end up in there and yeah I'll try to get at least 3000 gph for sure. I'm a little overwhelmed at this stage of the build, but I figure I can always make changes in the future if something doesn't work out 😅

    That's abit of a shame 😕 such a nice expensive bottom drain and for the manufacturer just to say that's how it is 🤷 I wouldn't accept that

    • @TobiasHolenstein
      @TobiasHolenstein  Год назад +1

      Yeah I thought it was a pretty odd response as well, in my case I guess it will be ok, but if I was going pump fed it would definitely be an issue

    • @keepingitkoi
      @keepingitkoi Год назад

      @TobiasHolenstein just be careful as what they have told you is rubbish as gravity fed a 4" pipe can do 18000l that's 4800 USgallons per hour and you can even research that yourself but bear in mind the flow will be determined buy the pump you put on the filter if your returning 10,000lph then your drain is pulling 10k lph

    • @TobiasHolenstein
      @TobiasHolenstein  Год назад +1

      @@keepingitkoi That may have been my fault, I may have remembered the number wrong, but thank you for the correct info 🙌

      @keepingitkoi Год назад

      @TobiasHolenstein no worries bud what is your bottom drain run going into first ? I ask because just incase a fish did dissappear up there I've seen it happen many a time in my job try and make sure (if you can) that the first box/filter on the drain line has a bit of space just in case a fish ends up in there that way you can just place them straight back in the pond 👍

    • @TobiasHolenstein
      @TobiasHolenstein  Год назад +1

      @@keepingitkoi Yeah I was also worried about that. I think I might do a little settlement tank as the first stage, just incase a fish does end up in there

    17000 litres per hour on a 4 inch gravity pipe depending on the pump you use . And it will be totally possible for small fish to end up in your filter

    • @TobiasHolenstein
      @TobiasHolenstein  Год назад

      Yeah I think that was my fault. I probably remembered the number wrong that he gave me. But the fish should be able to swim out right? Like the current of the water won't be too strong for them?

    • @skeggy
      @skeggy Год назад

      @Tobias Holenstein depends on the flow rate of your pump I have a 2 inch bottom drain with a pump pulling about 4k litres and find fish in the easypod occasionally if I wind the pump up to 10k litres I find them in the filter regularly .. its not an exact science

    A 4" bottom drain is way too big for that size pond my friend. A 3" bottom drain is for ponds up to 8,000 gallons and a 4" is for ponds up to 14,000. There won't be enough suction or water flow to clean out the waste that collects down there over time and bacteria will form causing your fish to be sick. Something to look into.

  • @Chequr_Prostate
    @Chequr_Prostate Год назад

    That’s not good enough, the manufacturer is selling a defective product that does meet the specification. There are plenty of bottom drain manufacturers that don’t have these problems. What are they going to do keep selling products not fit for purpose. Get on the phone and tell him to send you the modified parts.

    • @TobiasHolenstein
      @TobiasHolenstein  Год назад +1

      Yeah I'm really not sure what they plan on doing going forward with their drains. I kind of got the feeling that they aren't going to make any changes, so I don't know.
