Nice! TY Got the first archery, unit 15, here in NM. Glassed up 16 bulls last night. I'm 63 and I still feel like a kid waiting on Christmas morning. So much fun.
Just finished an eastern Oregon hunt solo. Three years in and I’ve never shot one with a bow. You just answered and confirmed some ideas that i came away with at the end. I am thoroughly optimistic. Got into a barking contest with a large 5x5 and ran out of day light. I ran away at the end and he followed me and he wouldn’t leave for 30 minutes. It’s dark and I’m laying behind a log. Lighting flashing on the horizon and he won’t shut up. I laid there and extra 30 minutes after he stopped barking. I didn’t want him to ID me. That was pretty intense. Such an emotional bull. I’m driving back and thinking of the bark scream chuckle idea and wondering if that could have made a difference. He also came in after I shut up and I now (thanks to you) realize that not giving up my location was my super power. Unfortunately he came in to about 45 yards but my bow was down and I had calls in my hands. Lol I never thought to run up on him but it was so dry and crunchy I’m not sure if I could have. I was wearing sneaky feet and it was loud. Thank you. Great tips. I will get my first archery bull solo. I’m learning.
Great content and very useful. Helped to answer some of my questions about solo calling/hunting. Thanks, can hardly wait for the chance to give it a try. 👍
These are great tips. I’ve lived through many of these mistakes too many times. Every single failure is a learning experience. Patients is so key when solo. Great video! Solid info here! Keep up the great work.
Just got into bow elk hunting 2 years ago. I hunt in oregon and still have yet to tag out on one but I’m hoping that this is my year! Your guys videos seem to be helping me alot. Love the content!!!
Man, every time I watch one of your videos I really want to go hunting. Moved to a solid hunting state but need to wait till next year due to residency requirements (if I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for a tag).
Solo hunting elk around here at first I didn't like the thought of hunting thick reprod. But now is my favorite scenarios. So much cover. So little line of sight for both you and the elk. Makes solo scenarios have a little higher odds than that old growth park like canopy that we all dream of.
Crazy great info! I definitely want to go elk hunting someday, the deer here in Florida are so small, and just want to broadhead my horizons..lol I've learned a ton from ya'll, THP, and Hushin about elk, I enjoy every video and the old ones too. Love what ya'll are doing ❤️
Solo hunter here. All great advice that took me many, many mistakes to learn. Once thing I would add, and it's not just for solo hunters, is to NOT setup behind your cover. Have your cover behind you, breaking up your outline. If you have your cover in front of you, it will be in the way of your shot. Good luck this season guys! Stay safe and shoot straight!
Might add as a full time solo I always use the short side of bugling/calf then move apt 20 yds and wait. Most of my mistake’s have been staying put after calling and getting caught where I can’t move or shoot (last yr, 18yds as example)
the shit a guy learns solo elk hunting…. takes years of practice, theses are top notch tips for sure. the bark scream bark chuckle tactic makes great sense to me, i’ve never known how to handle being barked at so gonna try this!
Wicked stuff, have picked up on some of these through ur videos over the years, typically this is my method, usually go solo and have actually only harvested solo
Can’t wait for September. Am I the only one who’s got gear scattered all over the house, full camo on and shooting my bow in the backyard and scaring the crap out of the cats with bugles ? My neighbors don’t hunt and must think I am a nut job shooting my bow from the roof.
Man, great info. I’ve been trying to get into bow hunting for a few years now. I’ve only hunted with a rifle, and never new how to set up or call in. I’ve been practicing my bugles and cow calls with your guy’s advise. Now I just need to get out there and do work.
So I know you guys go for the bulls that want to play. But how long will you wait for a silent bull that you know is close. I’ve been on elk knowing they were close by but wouldn’t talk. We tried everything for 45min to an hour then decided to take a break and eat lunch. Both of us with sandwiches in hand on our butts had a nice six point peek over the finger ridge at 7yards. It didn’t take him long and away he went. So how long do you wait on a quiet coastal bull???
Hey can you talk something about being ready as a caller have arrow knocked, be ready Don't know how many times I've been caught calling set my bow down no arrow knocked when there's 1 or 2 shooters set up that that bull has slipped by and come within 5 to 10 yd of me the caller and not being ready to shoot. I know when you're filming that probably is harder because your trying to get it on film, but I'm sure it has happened where that bull has come to the caller. I've killed 3 bulls this way when it's just me as the caller and 1 guy set up as the shooter. Only after learning the hard way several times not being ready
Do you walk into your hunting spots before daylight or wait till daybreak to walk in? My concern is walking into a bear or mountain lion on my solo hunt. Thanks
It depends on the situation... Most of the time elk are headed to their bedding area shortly after sunrise... In high pressure public lands, Elk will often bed down in reprod, thick brush, or windfalls so they can't be snuck up on, so you're in a good spot if you have a heard scouted and you know where they feed, where they bed, and the routes between... If you've got that, you definitely want to be between feeding areas and bedding areas before daylight... It's WAY easier to call a bull in the direction he's already headed....

Get out with a neighbor who has a tag and get more experience for when you do get a tag.
Very helpful!
Good show tonight lots of good info I got 13 years of solo calling it’s a challenge for sure but when it comes together very rewarding

I've been bark scream chuckling for the last 4 days and getting my solo mindset cause I might be out there alone for a few days this year. I'm pumped!

Super helpful video and great information! I have never Elk hunted but it’s on my bucket list !

Once again thank you for sharing. I am going to do my best to help a friend fill his tag!

Is calling effective first week of season? I've never gotten answer till late September.

Do they close their eyes when raking?
