  • Sometimes 1 plus 1 is 3. This is such a miracle. By layering simple triads on top of each other we can create new sounds with ease. This technique is called superimposing and is widely used by the great guitarists among us. If you’re stuck with improvising, just watch this video and you’ll have a brand new tool to your disposal!

    Diatonic triads a third apart spell diatonic seventh arpeggios / chords. That's why they work.

    Hi Rob ! Great lesson again. Beware @ 5:38, the C on the 2nd string is at the wrong place and at 14:47, there is a B in place of the C, still on the 2nd string. Malediction ;o). It took me a while to realise.... (+ keeping "minor" typed in the major chord section ... It must have been a hard day... ^^). Outstanding content anyway!

You're working at a way higher level of detail and clarity than most instructors on youtube. This is the kind of content you dont see a lot of for free! Thanks so much! Do you offer online courses to enroll in btw? I'd be very interested.

    Not really superimposing here.
    In the first case of E aeolian over CMaj you are just playing lydian basically...
    If you really want to superimpose chords, it will be with more dissonant and outside options, aplying other concepts.
    Ex: CMaj over EMaj, Cm over Dbm, C melodic minor over B7, Gmaj7#11 over Cmaj7#11 Etc...

    • @QJamTracks
      @QJamTracks  2 года назад +2

      Can't say I agree Josele. Well partially :) Maybe you have a point with the Em scale over Cmaj, but that is not the subject of the video. Superimposing just means layering two items that result in a new entity keeping their initial meaning. In music that would be layering two chords that are somehow related. So Em over C major for instance are related by common notes. Or the Em pentatonic sale over the Am chord resulting in extension (9 and 11). This creates colour tones.
      Your examples are also superimpositions, but also something else. C over E will clash and is much more used as a linear mediant relationship. Cm over Dbm is much more a dissonant polytonality and C melodic minor over B7 is just the 7th mode of the melodic minor scale: the altered or super locrian scale. Gmaj#11 over Cmaj#11 will sound better without the clash of C# and C (depends on how much outside you want to go of course, although outside playing can be done in many ways). Gmaj7 over C without the #11th's (like in my video) creates a beuatiful C lydian layered sound.
      I know it's arbitrary but the examples in my video are definitely superimpositions :) Still I appreciate your input!
