    that jacket is exceptionally rad! i am super jealous. i have quite a collection of wool pea coats, duffle coats, and great coats, and none have fabric as amazing as that one.

    I must get me a felting needle as I am currently into learning different ways to do invisible mending and then move on to visible mending. This coat is so gorgeous. The repair is amasing. Thank you.

    Thank you for this! The same happened to me. Mine is a 1960's hot pink wool swing coat. Didn't notice the holes until after I got home, then realized the shop I punched the coat from had a no return policy! I'm glad to see that I can save this coat! Again, thank you!

    Hi Natalie. I really enjoyed this video. Excellent background music also. I had seen another video using this technique, but he used a piece of styrofoam underneath the thick wool; the overcoat was unlined. But I was looking for a video in which someone managed to perform the technique with a lined overcoat, without having to partially remove the lining. I'm so happy to find this video, as it's a great addition to the other video I found. Wishing you and all in this comments section safety, good health and protection at this time. Stay at home and please stay safe everyone.

    Hi! Nice Precise Wool Fix Technique, and in Real Time! I'm trying to repair a 1/4" hole in a Darth Vader Wool Cape. What do you think about applying a little Elmer's Glue (or a ModgePod equivalent) into the hole with maybe the first layer of spare wool trappings, you're finding from other parts of your cool Vintage Coat or my Vader Cape? I figure to see only a "slight bump" on the wool surface, but the cape is "forgiving" black. You dare me?

      Sounds like a fun project! I haven't tried that but the glue might give it some extra hold (a fabric-specific glue may stick best to fabric). I wonder if the glued bits might make a rather solid surface that may be a little difficult to work the felting technique into? Again, haven't tried so not sure. Another option the ladies at the fabric store told me about is using fusible interfacing and ironing it on from the back. I'm going to try that out to fix a few holes in a black wool dress of mine. Good luck and it would be cool to hear how it goes for you!

    Does this process still work if the jacket has no lining? Hoping to fill a hole on an amazing vintage Mexican souvenir jacket

    • @vintagebynatalie2681

      Good question! It looks like someone else in the comments saw another video with a similar technique with an unlined jacket but they had used styrofoam behind it while fixing it up so it sounds like it has been done! I wonder if you would have to make a patch with a little wool and sort of work it into the sides? Or even attach a little fabric patch behind the hole to felt the wool into? Good luck! It sounds like such a beautiful jacket.

    Hi Natalie, thanks for this awesome video! I bought a vintage cashmere coat and had it dry cleaned. When I got it back, I noticed several holes that look exactly like the ones you had on your coat!! I’m not sure whether the holes were already there when I bought the coat. What do you think are the causes of these holes? Is it dry clean damage, or moths? I’m a little worried they’re moth holes. 😵

    • @vintagebynatalie2681
      @vintagebynatalie2681  2 года назад

      Hi Dan. Hard to know. Cashmere is pretty delicate and depending on the age or condition some items I would talk to the dry cleaner about the best course of action. My dry cleaner told me one wool vintage dress is too delicate to dry clean so I just have to steam and spot clean. If they are moth holes, hopefully the dry cleaning took care of any of that. Sometimes I spritz my clothes and closet with essential oils to keep the moths away. Good luck!

    Do I have to avoid the lining? Onmy coat the hole is only on the outer shell. THe lining underneath is 100% intact.

    • @vintagebynatalie2681
      @vintagebynatalie2681  4 года назад +2

      It sounds like the construction of your coat may be slightly different than mine. My coat in the video has a lining layer, but also a fabric layer the wool is tufted into which helped hold in the felted wool. In any case, you probably want to avoid the lining. This would help avoid damage to it but generally lining also moves freely from the wool layer and could pull at the patch. In this case, you could focus the felting on attaching it to the wool around the hole. Depending on the texture of the coat, you may want to prepare a felt patch ahead of attaching it to work it into a good texture and shape first, and then add more or remove some as you work it in depending on how it is looking. If you are worried about whether or not it will stay, you may be able to try something with fusible interfacing or fabric tape from the interior. I would take your project to Joann's and ask for their advice before trying anything too daring though. They usually steer me in the correct direction :) Good luck!

      @@vintagebynatalie2681 Thank you for your answer and your help. I will take a better look at the lining tomorrow (and the hole).
      Anyway, you made a good point about the difference regarding the lining. This is already helping a lot to understand the problem.

  • @katarinanonelei
    @katarinanonelei 2 года назад +1

    Do you know if this works on cashmere coats? I have a vintage one from my mom that I'd love to restore and the color is a unique one, so I doubt if I could find a filler material that matches it.

    • @vintagebynatalie2681
      @vintagebynatalie2681  2 года назад +2

      I haven't tried this technique on cashmere so I'm not sure but I don't think it would hurt to give it a try as long as you are careful. Cashmere is a bit more delicate so I would recommend to go slowly and be careful to match the texture of the rest of the coat the best you can. Good luck!

      @@vintagebynatalie2681 I've never felted before, and alas we don't have a Daiso where I live (sigh). Looking online there are a ton of choices for felting needles. Do you have a size/shape you'd recommend? Thank you!

    • @vintagebynatalie2681
      @vintagebynatalie2681  4 года назад +2

      Good question! My plan is to ask my dry cleaner about it when I need to clean it next and let him know about any spots that may not do well with rough handling. In my experience they are pretty knowledgeable and honest about any risks. My dry cleaner also seems pretty responsive to specific requests and treating an item depending on its needs. I will let you know more when I chat with him next!

    • @vintagebynatalie2681
      @vintagebynatalie2681  3 года назад +1

      @@silentpain1235 I haven't had any issues with my coats but I always make sure to talk to my dry cleaner and point out any concerns I have beforehand. He is good about taking care of my vintage items or telling me honestly if something is too old or delicate to dry clean (which happens and in that case I usually end up steaming and spot cleaning instead). So it may be good to talk to a dry cleaner you trust and see on a case-by-case basis. Good luck!
