Great video as usual. Just a couple of things. I daily my A110 and absolutely love it. As far as luggage space is concerned you can now buy a fitted luggage set from Bag World (I helped design it and was the first customer). My wife and I manage trips away no problem at all. Helmets aren’t a problem either - the boot was designed to fit two helmets in for track days. The wipers need to be put into maintenance mode to lift up with the bonnet closed. With the ignition off just push the stalk all the way down. As for the more “prosperous” driver there are other seats options that accommodate a wider frame but I am lucky to be able to fit into the buckets and love them. Oh, and the Life110 geometry settings transform the car making it more planted and stable whilst still as direct. Overall I love mine and never fail to get out with a smile on my face.
Echo this as a A110 owner also - I managed a long weekend to the Lakes with my girlfriend and dog and managed it (just!) Only other point I had was that residual prices are as good as the Porsche’s if not better when you consider how many options are considered must haves to retain a residual on a Porsche. Cracking car, cracking review :)
I tried the 2022 A110 GT, which has the A110 suspension, and the 300 horsepower engine, and you sit almost an inch lower than in the regular A110. Great feeling, very light, nimble, comfortable ride, surprisingly good sound from the engine, and so easy to drive fast. The Cayman equivalent comparison would be the S version with the turbo four. I'd take the A110 GT over that.
95% of A110 RUclips Car Reviewer Love the sporty Bridesmaid (A110), but marry the Bride (conventional Boxster/Cayman). They use luggage space, engine noise, media console etc as an excuse, but it all boils down to their overinflated ego of themselves....I want to be seen in a Porsche. Really silly. Pound for pound, the A110 is a much better and extremely practical car 😁
I think this was one of your best reviews Pete. The car is a cracker and provides a real alternative the the Audi TT, Boxster and Cayman etc. It has that flair that only Italian and some French cars have.
Good review Pete. Always admire the ethos of the Alpine.... Even the latest Lotus Emira weighs over 1450kg. Even more incredible that the GM T50 comes in at only 986kg with that fantastic V12 (and price tag)......
I like fun and quirky cars. I am soon to make the transition from US to EU, so on the look out for a car to take advantage of the speeds and roads there compared to the rather boring straight lines that cross the North American continent. I have had a few porsches, a couple of BMWs, and now I have the 160hp Fiat 500 Abarth. I am taken aback that the A110 is near the same weight as my little hot hatch but has 100hp more in a package that actually allows you to use the weight and power. I will definitely being looking it up when I make the move later this year.
Sport cars with auto boxes interest me little (like these two, all McLarens, Ferraris, Lambos…) but at least out of the two here the Alpine is the only car with the paddles in the right place: on its steering column. Are you listening Porsche? The luggage compromise of the Alpine is what one will get back from its much lighter weight so there is a trade off here and as a sports car I don’t think Alpine can be criticised but all these car makers that try to compete (like Lotus) with Porsche boxer engine miracle packaging by using inline engines are setting themselves for a guaranteed loss… Re the Apline it is a shame there is no manual… if there was one I could…I could just about forgive its inline engine, the turbo blowers, the small capacity and the tiny number of cylinders… price wise every car nowadays seems to be very expensive (a FIAT all-electric 500 goes for 30k…) and these two are no exception.
normally in french cars you can hit the whiper button with key ignited yet engine off, and see the whiper position itself half way for it to be removable from the front wind shield
Very generous assessment of the A110. We love ours, we are lucky for practical duty we can use our VW Arteon with a hatch that would fit a grand piano in it :). The Alpine replaced my 6 year old Mk3 Audi TT , so very big shoes to fill . The Audi was a great allrounder . Alpine is more focused but definitely more delicate, and a lot less practical , however I am still able to daily it. Perhaps your Porsche is the perfect balance . Cheers from Brisbane
Excellent description of a driver's car and your conveyance of how it feels to drive the Alpine. Fabulous way to review and compare the cars, especially with the luggage situation. I own a 718 Cayman S and have been quite impressed on what it can carry, along with use of the parcel shelf / engine compartment cover for smaller items.
Great video as usual, I looked at this and the boxster wanted a convertible so went with a BMW Z4 M40I was one year old and a really good price, but they are all great cars.
Had a go in one of these on track last year and i was blown away by the fun character of the car. One of my all time favorites is the Mclaren 570S and the A110 felt like a slightly softer and budget friendly version of that. As much as i love Porsche, especially the 718 or 981, for a day on the track id rather drive the Alpine.
Very helpful especially luggage ans seats; I am slim but back shape might be a problem in those nice looking seats. Interested interior is quality! My 6 cylinder Boxster is a manual, and even after driving an LP560 Lambourghini and a 458 at Goodwood this week, I am not convinced about Paddleshift.
Good evening all and Petrol ped. hope you are doing well i love your videos Thank you so much I absolutely love your Porsche looks lovely i an current eating a Tescos Jaffa cake witch is very nice thanks you so much for the video brilliant
Very enjoyable review. I definitely had to test drive a Cayman before I could decide but as good as the Cayman was, I just didn't feel excited by it. Bought a Premier edition A110 and can be completely honest in saying I have never at any stage enjoyed a car more. It's my fifth mid-engined car along with a couple of Lancia Integrale's but not have given the feeling of confidence to exploit every once of the cars performance the way my Alpine does. Mix that in with its ability to feel so comfortable and I just don't really want to drive anything else. I do hate the infotainment screen and wish mine had apple carplay but that is about it. No issues at all as a daily and I just learn to pack smart.
You like all cars……petrol, hybrid, electric. Interesting that..perhaps you should consider changing the name of your channel then.. I thought you were a petrol head. As the name of your channel suggests. 🤨
I am a Petrol Head and as all my friends and family call me Ped I called the channel Petrol Ped. That doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy a diesel or electric car. Changing the channel name just isn’t an option sadly 👎
.... interesting car and fun but I don't think I will be trading in my 575bhp F Type SVR for one of these. 15mpg or not, nothing thrills more and as for the environment I have 2 words to say .... and the second word is "off" lol
I I’m with you on that. I would love an F Type SVR. One of my all time favourites. Sadly I am a convertible fan and the boot in an F Type convertible is a joke. Even worse than the Alpine 😬
As always, great review. But alpine does nothing for me, no feeling at all. It is too plain or ugly, not stylish and the brand has nothing to bring in the company of the mighty Porsche brand. None
The A110 is a brilliant modern rendition of the original car , we.now just need more companies to follow suit, imagine a modern SWB Quattro, Maxi turbo 2, TR6, Jensen Interceptor, BMW 2002 turbo, Lotus esprit etc etc
100% agree with you on what makes a drivers’ car. I keep my eye out on what’s currently out there in the market and am always amazed at how much modern sports cars weigh these days. That’s why I’ll continue to drive my V8 TVR for many years to come. Just can’t beat (for now) the value for money and pure driving experience! It’s old but it goes oh so well. Thanks for a lovely review!
For the fouling of the wipers when you're washing the car, this happens in lots of cars nowadays. The manual will tell you how to move the wipes halfway up the screen (usually a press and hold of the wiper stalk when the ignition's on/engine off.) Then you can easily lift them from the screen or change the blades.
The A110 is the only new car at Amy price point that I'm genuinely interested in. Ok so it's out of my budget but even if I had an open chequebook there is nothing else even a twice the price to tempt me as many modern cars feel so detached, are too heavy, too firm and simply try to compensate with excessive power. The Boxter and Caymen really did set a benchmark for usable drivers cars. My friend used to take European road trips in a Boxter S and always praised the practicality of the car. The Alpine being as light as it is has no need for overly taught suspension and it's also nice to see there are smaller wheels available for those of us with a more sensitive posterior. I think.the only criticism I've heard of this car is the lack of a manual transmission option for a more traditional feel. I'm sure that exclusivity will aid strong residual values. Also I've discovered a few Renault models also have wipers that sit tucked below the bonnet when parked.
In any Renault I’ve owned where the wipers foul the bonnet, if you put the wiper stalk all the way to the bottom with ignition off obviously, the wipers will move to half way up the windscreen so you can lift the arms. I would expect this to be the same.
From the front it looks like a 1997 toyota celica st202...GOOD OR BAD ? Nice car wud need stick for me... In my Porsche cayman I got a wide screen tv in the boot..was my daliy for 5 years.. Top review 👌 cheers 🍻
Depreciation... using Fleet News mag’s running cost comparison tool and picking cars with similar base prices (£49350 for the A110 and £49700 for a Cayman 2.0) over3 years/30k miles the A110 comes out cheaper on fuel (8p a mile) and cheaper to service, however it loses slightly on depreciation (about £1500 more over 3 years), so in purely financial terms it’s probably a better buy than the Cayman...
Note for viewers: you can lift the windscreen wipers, heres how... Press the start button without your foot on the brake pedal, put the wipers on, they will move maybe 30 degrees and stop for you to do your cleaning. When you are done, turn the wipers off and they park again :)
Would be an expensive car for me. Nearly €70K, and thats include Sierra Blue paint for €4400 and Fucks Rims for € 1000 and every other option in a 110 GT.
Yes let's talk practically as a daily. Boxter 25-30mpg, Alpine A110 33-35mpg as per EVO. It must be all those additional bags you can get in the Boxster that drags the petrol consumption down!
Very intangible driving experience in the US :) ! If only the Renault Nissan alliance was healthier, then maybe a US A110 could have happened (no need to move the move the steering wheel for US), but not to be.
Owning one of those for more than 2 years now. Makes me happy every time, on every ride. - Last summer my wife and myself went for a 9 day trip to the Alpes, this year nearly a week in Bruges. If you choose your bags wisely there is more packing space than one should think. Take the break-down equipment out of the rear trunk and place it behind the seats (if you are not too tall), and you can move two reasonable weekender bags inside. Two aircraft-style handbaggage suitcase in the front, and two slim bags beind the seats - there you go.
I am 6'5". I have driven it. It is magical and has actually good leg space... Nimble and twisty. And very fast especially on b roads. Above 120mph the Porsche is way more stable tough. But i am up to buying an alpine rather than a Porsche....
Worrying about the A110 practicality is like worrying about the Dacia Spring being Nurburgring worthy. If you want to get a car able to deal with more than what you need for a weekend, just buy a cheap but reliable second hand car with enough space or install a removable trailer hitch and a trailer if you can find one and deal with ridicule.
Excellent review of the A110 including the practicality of owning the A110 and the Boxster. I considered buying the A110 but failed to convince myself to splurge £50k on effectively an excellent Renault. I had a preference for the Porsche Cayman for half the price, with better storage space, two additional cylinders and naturally aspirated engine. However, money was a factor in buying the cheaper used Cayman without any PCP, if money wasn’t an issue then the A110 remains desirable option. The Boxster GTS be my choice for reasons that you eloquently explained. Thanks Pete, please more A110 content if possible.
Lovely little car, perhaps to be regarded as a latter-day fixed head Elan? Chuckable, light, precise, the complete antithesis of so many of today's overburdened, overpriced behemoths that aren't really sports cars at all. It's what Lotus should be doing maybe, rather than that electric monstrosity?
I fell in love with these as soon as they were released. But having watched your honest unbiased review and captured and studied your emotions as you drove. I sensed genuine slight disappointment, in the dull engine sound. I know this car is not about the engine, more of a lightweight nimble package. But the delight of your GTS’s sonorous V6 at a time we are in the Swan-song times of petrol sports cars. I think engine character plays a huge part. You could argue that Lotus have done this 4 banger recipe, great handling package for years. Alfa tried it with, in my opinion the woeful 4c. Driven one, beautiful looking thing, ergonomically difficult, lack of power steering laughable and the car felt gimicky, and more Abarth like than Alfa. Again with dull Giulietta 4 pot. And although your GTS cost a fair bit more, It is clear a non GTS boxster of similar vintage to yours would be a much better proposition to live with and enjoy. Still the A110 is a lovely thing, and there is a reason Gordon Murray bought one.
Love the luggage test. Main reason I had two boxsters and the R8 which has a large space behind the seats. Both cars drove to the Dolomites for a walking holiday with the wife. My main criteria for a drivers car is it has to be useable for a touring holiday, why else would you buy one? As lovey the A110 is, it's not practical for my use.
Pete, of all the cars you have driven on your channel, can you do a video which rates them ONLY on the subjective driving elements - “as pure drivers cars”. No residuals, no servicing costs I.e. nothing sensible. What do you think? 😉
Interesting that you obviously like the interior on the A110. It suits me just fine too, but often comes in for some criticism because of the obvious use of Renault bits here and there. You make a fair point about charging for aluminium pedals etc - it does seem mean. However it's fair to point out that Porsches are far worse in that regard. The A110 comes with LED headlights, DCT, keyless entry and climate control as standard - all expensive options on a Cayster. The luggage arrangements are, without doubt, not the most convenient - but as others have pointed out, pack using the best use of space and you can get enough in for a couple of weeks or more away. The total space is 196 litres (the rear boot is actually the bigger of the two!) (plus the space behind the seats) - considerably more than (say) an MX5 an S2000 and quite a few others. The Boxster, and even more so the Cayman, are easily the best in class in that regard. I've never found the luggage space an issue in the A110 - interior storage, on the other hand, is abysmal as standard (though fortunately quite easily fixable)
At first glance it reminded me of Audi TT line. They do have the issue with the wipers at least in the TTS, but you get a rear seat which while not practical for passengers provides a lot of storage.
you have to buy a 4-door Alpine if the test is the volume of suitcases. put a gallery on the roof. I find that a test for this type of car is more about the pleasure of driving. maybe the sponsor is a suitcase manufacturer
Super video bravo.
I just love the A110! This and the 911 are for me the most special Sport Cars... Also love/need practical transportation but I'm used to pack my motorbike with everything I need for trips! 😉
Great design and performance which arguably makes it worth every penny of the £50K price. The review itself was like watching something Top Gear would have done during Jeremy Clarkson's time when the show was at its best.
Great review once again Pete. Although it’s in a much higher price bracket, this review reminds me of your MX5 ND RF review from five years ago. You weren’t sure about them at first, but by the end of the video, the attributes of a small, light weight, drivers car came through. It’s not all about outright bhp. As you stated in this video, on the public roads you just end up catching up with whatever is in front and joining the procession (tracks are a different thing). Loving my Launch Edition RF 👍
A great 'real world' review of a very pretty car. Interesting to read the comments as a lot of different opinions on whether people would have one compared to its competitors. I would have your boxter every time.
Well best idea is, use as weekend car, second car, and on track day or when going anywhere, you get the wife or friend to drive a second car for luggage space lol, always hand if like my wife they have an suv like a discovery sport 🤣🤣
Really enjoyed the video, would be interesting to compare this standard car against a life 110 modified one like the green one you saw on your drive out. Will have to try an Alpine soon, same engine as my Megane but a totally different driving concept
Good video Ped. Had to smile when you were getting on it with all those SLOW markings on the road. Its a looker and from what you describe, a jolly good machine.
That’s a very useful comparison as I am looking at both cars, I didn’t appreciate how much luggage you could fit in the Porsche, it looks very useable, to the point of a European road trip and camping being an option
One of your best reviews, great little car, also think the depreciation on these will be close to the Porsche. I love my old 987 boxster, the Alpine has also always been a fascination, since reading early car magazine reviews on the original models.
Hi Ped Late to the party with this one.😥However think you nailed it again. Pretty drivers car, but afraid not for me as it has a roof. Luggage not to much of a problem, all you need is an understanding wife/partner, essentials only, problem solved. We managed a six week trip San Francisco to New York, 6500 miles in Morgan Plus 8. One suit case plus two chairs on luggage rack, spares and coats behind seats. Easy.😎😎
I've owned 3 Boxsters and I would buy another one over the Alpine. The Alpine is cool because its not in America for sale, but the Boxster is still a Porsche.
Buddy that experiment was great,really...fantastic actually, just a little show, but interesting to know, and see, because now i know that lack of boot space would get to me,without a doubt, car looks good, but for 50k have my doubts, for a bit more you have yours,i mean...
Great & honest review. As I live in Japan, I need a car with a small footprint in the city. But we have also wonderful winding mountains where se can enjoy such a car to the max. My dream car. When I will be able to afford one, we will all drive electric probably...
Great video as usual. Just a couple of things. I daily my A110 and absolutely love it. As far as luggage space is concerned you can now buy a fitted luggage set from Bag World (I helped design it and was the first customer). My wife and I manage trips away no problem at all. Echo this as a A110 owner also - I managed a long weekend to the Lakes with my girlfriend and dog and managed it (just!)
Only other point I had was that residual prices are as good as the Porsche’s if not better when you consider how many options are considered must haves to retain a residual on a Porsche. Cracking car, cracking review :)
Good info think bmw have maintenance mode.👍👍👍
I tried the 2022 A110 GT, which has the A110 suspension, and the 300 horsepower engine, and you sit almost an inch lower than in the regular A110. Great video. I guess this car is all about purity. Also, Gordon Murray owns one, so you know it's special.
Very true 👍

Decent review, but I would of liked more about the build quality. You can't get your race suit, gloves, boots and helmet in the Alpine?

Alpine over the Porsche everytime for me, and if I was going away in it I'd wear all the clothes I need to overcome the luggage "issue" 🤪

Get the bigger seat option then.
🤣 luckily I'm built like a gypos whippet.... err hum 🙄

Thank you, Great video as always. Its so tempting with such a low weight. A convertible one would make the decision even harder.
I agree 👍
Great video , I have always loved the look of this car , it’s beautiful looking thing
👍
Note for viewers: you can lift the windscreen wipers, heres how... Press the start button without your foot on the brake pedal, put the wipers on, they will move maybe 30 degrees and stop for you to do your cleaning. When you are done, turn the wipers off and they park again :)
👍
Get one next month 😊
And then theres the one which has nearly 300 HP.....now that's insane!
Would be an expensive car for me. Nearly €70K, and thats include Sierra Blue paint for €4400 and Fucks Rims for € 1000 and every other option in a 110 GT.
Nice car and a great review as always.Too small for me though.I like my cars to be practical.
Yes let's talk practically as a daily. Boxter 25-30mpg, Alpine A110 33-35mpg as per EVO. It must be all those additional bags you can get in the Boxster that drags the petrol consumption down!
😂😂😂
Great review. The gold standard. But I would take the A-110 iso the Porsche. There are too many Porsches out there....
Same problem with the Emira - great car but no proper storage - Cayman/Boxster wins on that score
They are hard to beat to be honest 👍
Loads of space for the driver 👍
I’d love to try the A110S or a modified one next 👍
Still the A110 is a lovely thing, and there is a reason Gordon Murray bought one.
first time ever the reviewer doesn't say it is cheaply built and finished. however, great video and cheers from Italy!
That’s because it’s not 🤷♂️👍
My second time watching this review Pete, extremely honest and fair and not over critical, one of your best.
Thanks David 👍
Get another performance motor without a manual (stick shift) option ...ridiculous! 😎🤘🎸
GT cars are your focus...and that is fair. But sports car can be impractical and still awesome. That is this car or an elise.
@@jeffreyb.1657 agree, had an Elise, just getting old 😐
Loved the video, have been subscribed for a while now. I prefer the boxter. Would love to hear your thoughts if you reviewed the 2022 Kia Stinger GTS?
I’ve only driven an older one. Here’s my review from 4 years ago. Loved it. Proper bit of kit the Stinger 👌

Oh and thanks for the Sub 👍
A roof box is the solution! Simple 🤠
😂👍😂
To be honest I'm not the biggest fan of the looks. Not sure on the round lights at the front. Sounds like it drives well though. Boxster all day IMO.
The Great Captain Slow has one of these, so if the Captain owns one, then enough said. 👍
Also Gordon Murray.
At first glance it reminded me of Audi TT line. They do have the issue with the wipers at least in the TTS, but you get a rear seat which while not practical for passengers provides a lot of storage.
Indeed 👍
you have to buy a 4-door Alpine if the test is the volume of suitcases. put a gallery on the roof. I find that a test for this type of car is more about the pleasure of driving. maybe the sponsor is a suitcase manufacturer
Super video bravo.
Merci 👍
I just love the A110! This and the 911 are for me the most special Sport Cars... Also love/need practical transportation but I'm used to pack my motorbike with everything I need for trips! 😉
You will be an expert packer then 👍
Great design and performance which arguably makes it worth every penny of the £50K price. The review itself was like watching something Top Gear would have done during Jeremy Clarkson's time when the show was at its best.
Thanks Brian 🙏🏻
Great review once again Pete. Although it’s in a much higher price bracket, this review reminds me of your MX5 ND RF review from five years ago. You weren’t sure about them at first, but by the end of the video, the attributes of a small, light weight, drivers car came through. It’s not all about outright bhp. As you stated in this video, on the public roads you just end up catching up with whatever is in front and joining the procession (tracks are a different thing). Loving my Launch Edition RF 👍
That’s right. Similar type of fun car 👍
Evening pal, Kia Stinger straight away for me in terms of rear. It’s a nice car, but would be too small for us. Fun driving though.
I got as far as getting a finance quote and if they changed the aperture of the boot I think I’d get one. Yes, the classic, golf clubs.
Wow what a beautiful car and with one of these who cares if it’s practical
👍
A great 'real world' review of a very pretty car. Interesting to read the comments as a lot of different opinions on whether people would have one compared to its competitors. I would have your boxter every time.
Thanks Alan 👍
They make an RHD version but can't bring it to NAFTA nations. Great.
Yeah, I’m keen to try one of those 👍
Good video Ped.
Yes. Absolutely 👍
Can't you move the wipers to the 'service' position as on VW group vehicles to enable lifting the wiper while washing the car?
Little Alpine looks better than I initially thought, it's like a French Lotus Exige.
Fair assessment. Great looking car, but to live with compared to a Caymen / Boxster not in the same league.
Liking the usage of the GoPro for the POV bits, saves a tonne of time and mixes it up 👏.
Filmed in one take too 😜👍
@@PetrolPed I would expecting nothing less from a pro 😂.
I’ve seen several of these on Australian roads. This model looks even more stunning in metallic blue!😍🤤
I agree. The blue is lovely 👌
I think i would rather spend the money on a lotus if i was after a light weight B road hooner. Not a bad looking car bit to quiet though.
One of your best reviews, great little car, also think the depreciation on these will be close to the Porsche.
I love my old 987 boxster, the Alpine has also always been a fascination, since reading early car magazine reviews on the original models.
A convertible is the most stupid car you can buy. Twice the price for half a car 🚗 😳
Where I'm from, Alpine is a stereo maker. Very cool!
Just pronounced differently 😜👍
Very good love those alpines nice to see something we bit different.👍👍👍🐶🐶🐶
Hi Ped
Late to the party with this one.😥However think you nailed it again. Easy.😎😎
You guys are heroes 👌👏👏👍
Great car. I not sure if i would save some money and get a MX5.
I've owned 3 Boxsters and I would buy another one over the Alpine. The Alpine is cool because its not in America for sale, but the Boxster is still a Porsche.
👍
I enjoyed watching the Video. A very nice Sports Car
Buddy that experiment was great,really...fantastic actually, just a little show, but interesting to know, and see, because now i know that lack of boot space would get to me,without a doubt, car looks good, but for 50k have my doubts, for a bit more you have yours,i mean...
Thanks 🙏🏻
Great & honest review. As I live in Japan, I need a car with a small footprint in the city. But we have also wonderful winding mountains where se can enjoy such a car to the max. My dream car. When I will be able to afford one, we will all drive electric probably...
😥
