Bad writing habit - You could go to a desert island to write, but if you're checking Facebook, news feeds, instagram, etc. than you really haven't gotten away at all! Those are the 'habits' or rather distractions that I want to try and minimize in the new year.

For number 6, I used to get kinda taken aback by my beta giving feedback, getting imposter syndrome etc. But instead of "this isnt good enough" I realised that maybe it isnt perfect, but its at a stage where someone thought it would be worth it to give this level of detailed feedback because there is potential and that thought has helped me a lot.

I've come to realize that "motivation" is an emotion. It's when you're excited about doing something constructive. Such excitement is not consistent or regular, so don't rely on motivation to do anything you need to do regularly. People are rarely motivated to brush their teeth, wash their car, go grocery shopping, or go to work. These things are constructive and feel gratifying when they're done. Write without motivation.

Yeah like write for the sake of art, even if it's just a few lines, if you keep it consistent with setting small goals you'll find yourself more motivated to write longer chapters often

Thanks so much for these tips, Shaelin. Here's hoping that I'll FINALLY finish the first draft, and find a way to get myself motivated to write on a daily basis.

Agree. The one that hits home with me is write the first draft, then edit. I tend to write for a while then put it away. When I come back the next day all I see is how what I wrote could be written better so
I change, write, and change more.

Thanks for this list of bad habits. I can relate to absolutely all of them. Another one that trips me up is finding other things to do besides writing and thinking they are more important than writing. It's either a procrastination problem or skewed priorities, as writing keeps me sane!

Write for myself first. Write what I would want to read. Then it won't feel like work.
I need reminded of these bits of advice all the time.

When I feel like I’m just the guy typing and the story is telling itself, I find I’m strongly motivated and it’s a fun process. That feeling seems to come and go but when it’s available to me I can write every day and feel so productive. Maybe there is a muse after all 🤔.

Not only good advice, but plenty of food for thought as you evaulate your own writing habits.

Emphasis on #2. A lot of writers nowadays focus on self-publishing as well as the traditional route, so you shouldn't need to worry about making deadlines. Just take your time and if you're in the mood to write, then do it. But don't force yourself to do it if you're in a block.

Thanks so much for this advice! I feel like it was meant for me personally as I am someone who refused to edit her own work! Its either too precious or I am too lazy! I just have to write my draft down!

Thanks for the advice. Hopefully, you'll have plenty of motivation going into the next year. Writing is an amazing learning experience that deals a lot with trial and error. I'm working on creating more visual sceneries in the stories I write. Early on, I experimented with different perspectives, but 3rd person feels like the best way to get the most out of my stories, considering I bounce around between characters using the Soap Opera technique.

Great tips, thank you! The editing process feels super daunting to me so I've pushed that away for quite a bit. I know that I have to find my own way of how I edit best but I'd love to know how you tackle editing or if there are any craft books you read on it or tips you have.
Wishing you a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year!!!
    Sending creative vibes

Great advice! So many push 'writing to market,' and I just...I can't. It depletes that first quality you mentioned: motivation.
And your advice there is also such a great perspective shift. Don't wait for motivation: create it! Love the mindset check 🩷
