"There Were Twelve of Us to Begin With" was first presented as HorrorBabble's third Twelve Days of Christmas series, from December 26th 2019, through to January 6th 2020. The story: A man drives into a blizzard atop the remote hills of the Peak District. It’s Boxing Day, and he’s on his way home following a Christmas spent with family. But the weather’s getting worse, and, in order to avoid losing control of the car, he’s forced to find a place in which to wait out the storm. His search leads him to the sprawling Miller’s Manor, on the outskirts of Miller’s Dale, wherein an unusual Murder Mystery Event is taking place. Much to his chagrin, he soon finds himself an unwilling participant in what quickly becomes apparent, is no ordinary game... I’m only forty minutes in and I’m fully invested in this. I intend to listen to this in full while I work. Something about Ian’s hypnotizing voice and fantastic storytelling talent makes the day go by so much smoother and much more pleasantly. Thank you for another wonderful tale, Ian!
Just starting chapter 10, I'll update when I finish the story. I really do enjoy your stories. I like the short ones because I listen to 30 minute stories in my drive to work. Your voice draws me into the story quite well. I have to listen again to hear the details I missed! Very well written story!
I waited for the full version, knowing how I would crave resolution. Brilliant. Simply brilliant. You've really outdone yourself, Ian. This is the cleverest, most intriguing tale I've heard or read in ages. Your writing keeps getting better and better. Well done, sir!
This deserves so many more likes and views than it has. One of my very favorite horror stories, period. I’ve listened to it three times since hearing it over Christmas
Fantastic story! I see someone already mentioned Agatha Christie, but you succeeded with a much darker tale! This was a great murder/mystery that should definitely be a movie.
Of all the great stories on HorrorBabble this is my favorite. I’ve listened to it many times and whenever I recommend HorrorBabble to someone I link this to them for their 1st listen.
@@HorrorBabble I keep returning to this story especially around Christmas time. It's August when I'm making this comment and I think this story is my all time favourite of yours Ian. 😃👍
This was wholly chilling. I felt cold throughout, the storm of the story seeping into my bones, along with tension in my muscles from the paranoia. Wonderfully written and singularly narrated.
Discovered this channel a couple of weeks ago and primarily was impressed by the exceptional narattions of Ian but this story takes things to a new level. I've honestly listened to this somewhere in the region of 8-10 times in a week. Not only for the story itself but the writing and the narration. Wish I had found this channel sooner
It took me a year to finally get through this story but i wish i had listened to it all a year ago. Exquisite story so amazing and so well written. You deserve an award Ian.
Amazing story! I only discovered your channel recently and am going back over your previous readings and originals. I didn't guess killer, so might have to re-listen for any potential hints I may have missed. I did get a chuckle at the first mention of the 'outhouse' though because here that would refer to an outdoor washroom and not a shed or barn.
WOW that was one of the best stories I've ever had the privilege to listen to 👏 n the narrating was awesome too 😍 thanks for sharing ur talent and time it's greatly appreciated 😍🖤💋
Wow what an ending!! I did not see it coming. Without giving anything away. But fantastic work. And all of it so real. The emotions behind it so painful. Wonderful work
This was Awesome I LOVE THIS STORY thank you so much. PLEASE make more stories like this...WONDERFUL! The only time I stop listening was to walk my dogs and to text a friend and recommend this story and HorrorBabble
No Lovecraft or supernatural beings here. Just a brilliant Horror-murder mystery who-dunnit. Takes its sweet time... but is worth every minute! Absolutely FANTASTIC! Bravo and very well done sir, both on the story and the narrating! 😎👍 It became as if an active movie in my mind. THAT is writing talent!
Mr. Gordon....superb and thank you. You are very talented. I am a long time fan of mystery as well as thrillers and horror. Sayers and Allingham are favorites... after Poe!...I am enjoying your channel. Very professional and am sharing your work to many others. Thanks again.
Hello Ian. I really admire your writing and recommend it and your readings of other authors. I've become a regular listener to your channel. I especially love all the old Cthulu mythos tales from what I consider the golden age of weird fiction (1920's - 1950's). I look forward to more readings of those kind of stories. Thanks for your obvious commitment to excellence.
Haunting, brutal, masterful and genuinely scary. A tale as transfixing as a pin through the thorax of an insect in a collection. Superb work as always Ian, both in the construction of the tale, and in it's delivery.
Good one! I called it (will not be divulging spoilers)! Good one, Ian! The amount these people drank! The cost to sign up mast have been enormous. The Lovecraft intro is timeless. It captures the time of year so well. Many do not realize "the old gent from Providence" liked Christmas.
This is awesome. Really enjoyed it. The murderer did something and had a reaction that substantiated my thought it was them. I called it! I was like, "Oh no (redacted), pay attention!" I will not say more because I di not want to spoil it! Love the Lovecraft opening. He was an atheist, but he also liked the Christmas/Yuletide season. Great job, Ian! Keep it up. I am looking forward to more!
I'm not finished with this story and I'm already excited to know what happened, who did it, and all.of that good stuff.....this is soooooooo goooooood!!!😁
Idk if the trend is going to continue but i had to pause and make a comment. I have a deep love of insects and study them quite often. I like how you are naming these guests after moths and butterflies and bees and other flying friends :)
On second listening the line was referencing the victim. Great story I love the narrators voice. Though, if it is ever printed I would buy a copy. I have only ever bought a handful of novels/ novellas after reading. Course this is audio which horrorbabble is the only stories I have listened to.
Thanks Chaos - having thought about it, I think I know which line you mean, which certainly can be perceived differently, particularly in audio. We've just released an eBook version, but a print version is a way off yet. Thanks for your show of support - we really appreciate it! :) Ian
I feel almost smug for getting the clue for Victim 7. Only the bug theme helped me figure out number 8 (since I had to figure out what bug each contestant was.)
Absolutely, Marcus! Our fourth special is currently in the works. Here's the playlist for all three previous offerings: ruclips.net/p/PLeNNKRLWxwoO7EoSKvwFyIDOk7auTQSed

Thank you very much! That's great to hear. Ian
Snuggling up with HorrorBabble is the greatest thing to drift away with. Such lovely tales! Thank you all!!!
Thanks for listening, Nathan!
The score card is a brilliant touch.
It's just as good in one big chunk as it was in 12 separate 'one a day' episodes. A masterpiece that is worth of a far bigger audience!
Just starting chapter 10, I'll update when I finish the story. I really do enjoy your stories. I like the short ones because I listen to 30 minute stories in my drive to work. Your voice draws me into the story quite well. I have to listen again to hear the details I missed! Very well written story!
Your inflections during descriptions of weather, scenery and personæ adds exponentially to the atmospheric immersion.
You are a legend, Ian!

Thanks, Blayze! We really appreciate that.
Fantastic story! I love stories of this kind. And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie also comes to mind. Keep up the great work!
Thank you! If anything, this story is my tribute to ATTWN. Ian

Bravo once again.
Ian you have delivered yet another stellar performance & story.
First of all I loved the Lovecraft intro, second that story was so amazing mysterious and complexed I loved it! Please write more stories.

That's kind of you to say, Quentin! Great to hear from you.
Visited by order of my son, insisting I listen to your work. I'm glad I did , what a masterpiece . Had me gripped.
Thank you for stopping by!
This helped me relax so much that I took 3 days to finish this story. And as always thanks to all concerned.
I could see this being turned into a film. I would watch it! Great story!
I know I see this comment on all the good stories I wish they would make them!
It was! it was called clue staring Tim curry granted there are some differences but the premise is generally the same
Although this was very well done and I loved it
It took me a year to finally get through this story but i wish i had listened to it all a year ago. Exquisite story so amazing and so well written. You deserve an award Ian.

Good Lord, Ian. Very well done indeed! Hats off, sir!
Brilliant, i was at the edge of my seat the whole time. Very captivating. Thank you for this.

I did get a chuckle at the first mention of the 'outhouse' though because here that would refer to an outdoor washroom and not a shed or barn.
Thank you for listening Dominique! And yes... an outdoor toilet would have made for a questionable setting indeed!
WOW that was one of the best stories I've ever had the privilege to listen to 👏 n the narrating was awesome too 😍 thanks for sharing ur talent and time it's greatly appreciated 😍🖤💋

This is probably my favorite 12 days of horror story. It's not just because I was one of the 12 faces, it kept me wondering until the end.
Great to hear from you, Sparky!
I really liked this one. Would be cool to have more murder mystery themed stories.
Wow!!! I'm out on a ranch doing ranchy things and this story just got better and better and made the time fly. You really are as good as anyone!

Many thanks, Aubry.
Great work Ian! I really enjoyed this story.
👏👏👏
This is awesome, congrats & kudos to all who made this happen. This is the most well constructed mystery that I've ever read (heard in this case.)
Thanks for the kind words, Mike.

Love the Lovecraft opening. He was an atheist, but he also liked the Christmas/Yuletide season.
Great job, Ian! Keep it up. I am looking forward to more!
Thank you for listening to this one!
Set in 1990 because there was no Net and no mobile phones
You're absolutely right, Dirk!
He could've easily done it now. Set in the 90s cuz that was the last time we had a chance. I imagine, anyway
I like your reading speed and pacing.
TOP WORK IAN GOD BLESS YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO FOR US 💎👍
Most excellent 👍👍👍
Reminds me of a classic who's name is so un- PC i cant repeat it. Good work i really enjoyed this.
Thrilling and gripping, I guessed the killer correctly based on the clues you left.
Thank you good sir.
It was Warren wasn't it ?
You fool! Warren is dead.
Yikes!!! what a story...TY *HorrorBabble*
Awesome. Felt like I was reading. I'm impressed. Ian u r great. I have an eye going bad. So I listened to a lot of videos. Bravo!
Thank you! Sorry to hear about your eye. All the best, Ian.
OMG I love that phrase "armed themselves with coats " personally I'd have been armed with the largest knife from the kitchen!
this is so brilliant! can't believe it took me so long to listen!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, Veronica!
This is fantastic. Great story and awesome narration.
I enjoyed very much in one-sitting. Fantastic work!

My life would be complete if this was a made into a movie (as long as thy followed the script to the letter).

My new favorite!!!
Haha! I found another of the Horror Babble originals. A rare find, and a gem every time.
Ah, a murder mystery . Good story and narration, thanks, Ian.
Great tale, & a treat to hear your regional accents 👌
Thank you!

To which line do you refer? I remember one, but do not remember where.
Agatha Christie has nothing over Ian! Bravo!
While all of the Christmas specials are good, this is the best.
Wow, what a story!
As a 53 year old woman I do, sort of, totally understand why the killer did that....! 😬
I feel almost smug for getting the clue for Victim 7. Only the bug theme helped me figure out number 8 (since I had to figure out what bug each contestant was.)
Your stories are kick ass Ian! Keep them coming!
Great job !
Homebrew? New to the party, didn't realize till I read the comments . Excellent!!
Love this channel
Awesome! Kept me guessing!
I was extremely impressed with this book please keep up the good work
A brilliant finale.
Thanks, Duchess!
Only old Americans will get this, but the whole time I was thinking: Where is James West when you need him. 🤣🤣🤣. Great story
Oh bravo Ian 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿🖤🖤🖤🖤👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Thank you!
Thouraghly enjoyed this.
God damn that was good
Evidently, according to the picture, Bluebottle is Jay-Z. lol
How many listens have I had? At this point, both I and the world may never know. But tis the season to listen again! (As if we need a reason)
Excellence!
First murder mystery that I genuinely did not know who the killer was until the final reveal. Tragic ending though
The photos is a stroke of genius.
Please do a other series for Christmas Ian!
