    This is social commentary on genetic engineering for humans, except this video contains aliens instead of humans.
    A women alien finds that she is unable to conceive a child naturally, so her and her partner go to a genetics fertility lab to grow her and her partner's genetic material into a child.

      Accepting is good, but I find it sad that they rejected the first only to create multiple who would've had to live with unnecessary debilitating illnesses. Except the albino one, I think that was just a surface-level difference and not some disease or impairment.

    I would just keep the first one, it isnt any kind of bad if you look at it. If a civillization has such an advanced technology of growing fetuses then it could also grow tissues and lings without a problem too.

    • @Zanek_power
      @Zanek_power 8 лет назад +2

      +Znik it's skin/flesh must be fully deformed or have some kind of a disease, I dont think that it has to do anything with race if both the mother and dad were from one color and their baby from a totally different one. Also it had different eyeball color, which could cause problems later on including a very bad vision because its plain purple. The first one also had a reaction, unlike the others which might be telling us that its more intelligent than the others. And as for last, if the first one seems completely fine then why would I get to the 2nd or the 3rd?

      Albino people aren't a race, it's just a color. Asian ppl, black ppl, anyone can be albino (although not nearly everyone has snow-white skin). If anything it's romantisizing it. Besides it's not like those aliens necessarily even have a caucasian/white equivalent.
      And I mean, the one-legged one and albino one would both have had some handicaps, big or small, but they were definitely both alright.

    They'd come in on the 2nd. The droid at the desk had seen the two come in and listened to the male put forth their request; they had been trying to conceive a baby for some time, but were met with constant failure, and desired an engineered one since their outlook for conception was bleak.
    Collection of the prospective mother's eggs was trying, but simple. The father, however, was a little bit more uncooperative. Either way, the semen had been acquired as well and the droid sent the drained parents home and set to work.
    The operation had been a success. Insemination and incubation had gone splendidly. The... ingredients were somewhat lacking in some departments, but that hadn't been a major problem. The only lasting effect on the child would have been that underdeveloped leg. The mother had looked simply elated at the sight of the little specimen inside the containment jar, smiling as it placed its little palm on the glass.
    The father... was less than pleased. Apparently such a deformity was not something he would like in his child. While the mother looked on, he demanded another specimen and paid for the service twiceover. The droid, unerring in its duty, took the budding specimen away... and shut the poor thing down, setting about crafting and growing a second child.
    The time came again. With the requested growth acceleration, the baby had come out as an unusual albino, incapable of breeding should she have found a mate in life. Just like last time, the mother's eyes shone in wonder and love... and the father's lip quivered in anger. Another tirade, he went on. The droid stared at him as he demanded a third specimen, silently allowing the man and his wife to pay for a third operation and leave, even as the poor hopeful mother wept for that which she had consistently had taken away from her.
    It was nearly an hour before the droid slammed its fist into the desk and carted the albino specimen to the laboratory, not stopping a moment as it put the poor thing down just like her brother before her. Don't stop, don't look at her, don't think about what you're doing...
    Seething, the droid set about once again growing a child for the demanding couple, dangerously modifying and accelerating the growth of the thing.
    One more time the jar was placed on the desk. The specimen was mutated partially, a squishy blob with only one eye and very little bone mass. The father looked as if he were about to speak up again, but the droid was having none of it, shooing him grumbling out the door.
    But as the droid looked expectantly toward the mother, it saw something that drilled into whatever heart it had like the needles it uses daily; she picked up the jar with the little mutant baby, the third of its unfortunate kind, and caressed it lovingly, as if it were her own child... it WAS her own child. Gladly paying for the service rendered, she hugged the jar close and walked out of the building while the droid looked on in silence.
    She loved it. She loved it no matter what. Three separate children, two of them dismissed and destroyed... she wouldn't have cared all along. She'd love them with all her heart regardless of whatever 'disabilities' or 'deformities' they had.
    The droid watched her go in silence, wondering about the things it had done. The terrible things it had done.

    Just watched this animation and I don't see any serious criticisms of it in the comment, despite it having a lot of dislikes. So I'll provide my criticisms and explanation of why I disliked it.
    *TLDR: the video misrepresents the science in order to abuse fallacious appeals to emotion, and that the message itself is deeply flawed and overly simplistic*
    This video is stated to be "social commentary on genetic engineering for humans", and based on the contents on the video, the message appears to be "genetic engineering is bad, because you should love all children the way they are." I have issues both with this message and the way it is presented.
    *Misrepresentation of gene editing*
    First, the video's misrepresentation of genetic engineering. Obviously, an animated video can't be expected to have extremely accurate biology. Ideally they would have consulted an actual geneticist on this, but I understand that's not always feasible. However, in this video, genetic engineering is not just oversimplified or innocently misunderstood, it is deliberately misrepresented in a dishonest and manipulative manner.
    1. Gene editing in embryos doesn't consist of growing an almost-completely-developed infant and then killing it if it is not approved. Instead, it modifies the genes of a preexisting embryo, which doesn't necessarily* require throwing out any embryos. This is plainly not how it works.
    *though this can happen if necessary: see point 2
    2. It's extremely inaccurate to represent the embryo - something barely more than a clump of cells - as having complex thoughts and emotions (for example, being able to recognize and love its parents). Embryos are thrown out all the time in standard in-vitro fertilization and scientific research today.
    This isn't an innocent misunderstanding of the science, it's intentionally manipulating the audience's emotions to agree with the creator's anti-gene-editing stance, by portraying gene editing as being evil and cruel in a way that it factually isn't. By all means, criticize gene editing, there are valid criticisms to be made. But this is very dishonest.
    You might argue that "but this video is about aliens, maybe that's just how their biology works!" but that misses the point. This video is explicitly described as "social commentary on genetic engineering for humans", so it _isn't_ just about aliens, it is meant to comment on human gene editing and should be understood as thus. The use of aliens in the animation does not make my criticism less valid.
    *Bad message*
    The message that gene editing is wrong because "you should just love your kid the way they are!" is frankly, a horrible one. I would give this video more lenience if this were a criticism of designer babies, where healthy infants are designed to have certain traits just for cosmetic or enhancement purposes (such as making a kid taller and giving them blue eyes). However, this video shows embryos with severe disabilities, and says that it's wrong to want to change that.
    And before anyone calls me ableist, yes, there are many "disabilities", such as ASD or Deafness, that can have an overall positive effect on someone's quality of life and be an important part of their identity and/or culture. (Or albinism, which was shown in this video, and is _mostly_ harmless). And yes, the ethics of modifying those away (if or when that ever becomes possible) are much murkier.
    However, let's not pretend that's equivalent to a condition that would actually cause significant suffering, social model of disability or not. Having chronic pain, dying early, or needing multiple organ transplants at a young age (one of the embryos in the video had withered organs), is not fun and nobody wants that. It's actually extremely difficult to conceive an ethical argument in favor of _not_ modifying affected embryos, in the case of debilitating and deadly conditions.
    This video's message of, "everyone is perfect and you should just love them the way they are," is necessarily followed by a silent, "even if they suffer their whole life and die early and you could have prevented it." It's just a terrible message to put out there, all for what? Because... nature is good?
    *Minor criticisms*
    Some minor criticisms:
    1. Conflating different issues. The father is shown to be controlling, overriding the mother's wishes. This is used to paint gene editing as bad, since the only character endorsing it is mean and evil (and juxtaposed with the kind, loving mother, who just wants a kid). However, the issue of a spouse overriding their partner's wishes unfairly is an entirely separate problem, and not a valid criticism of gene editing. Of course, it's okay for art to address multiple topics, but making this character the representative of gene editing is committing a strawman fallacy & is ultimately dishonest in its failure to address the arguments in favor of gene editing.
    2. Reinforcing stereotypical gender roles. This one mostly unrelated to the gene editing topic. But portraying women as being submissive and overly emotional, while portraying men as being aggressive and bad at parenting, is harmful to both men and women.

    • @kakyoinnoriaki1628

    • @lizardboi1476
      @lizardboi1476 4 года назад +6

      One thing I'd like to add. I don't really think the technology in the video can even be considered gene editing/genetic engineering, since it's more like an artificial womb. Then again, I could be very wrong on that part. It's also assuming that using technology for this can only result in a deformed child, when gene editing would probably have prevented majority of the events of the video.

    • @jacobhuang6590

      Almost every hard hitting message is Sad or Angry. Life is Not expendable, if you abort a child, you're obviously too idiotic to even have sex in the first place without Protection.
      Use your Heads, people.

    • @TemplarBlonic
      @TemplarBlonic 9 лет назад +3

      Forgot to put in my point...
      Point is, a Human life is precious, it's Murder in every way, even if it doesn't know what's going on.

    • @TemplarBlonic
      @TemplarBlonic 9 лет назад

      *Facepalm* I really need to check before I post.
      Another thing, NOTHING is perfect, nor will ANYTHING. EVER. BE. PERFECT. Humans are not perfect, Animals are not perfect, Nothing. Even if your Baby is a Blob, it's a human, if it's actually Suffering, THEN you can put it out of its misery, but it's inhumane to kill a Human that hasn't had a chance at life.

      @ПердунПердунски 8 лет назад +3

      Why? This animation's objective was to tell people that no matter if the baby wasn't born "normaly" in an anatomical term, its STILL a living creature like anyone of us, that now people want perfection (Husbent) rather than accepting what they are getting and making the most nice of it (Mother), and that you must always put as much care and love into someting which has something about a living beings future (Robot). I don't see any reason for part 2, what should it show?
