When I first started watching the very first episode, I was terrified, because the content is tough. I thought "Omg, this is a soft version of Todd Solondz movies'. But what I Love the most is the show thoroughly tests my level of empathy. The script, every single actress, directors, cinematography, costume design - everything is immensely Talented. Thank you!
Marina I agree in the beginning it is very confrontational and it makes us uncomfortable but by episode 3 or 4 in the first season I was hooked. I have been a Kate fan for a while and that’s why I started watching
They were on a tv show together called mercy and Taylor plays a nurse who just returned from war and Kate plays her mother. And the same actor that plays cal pipers brother also plays her brother on mercy .

You can tell Taylor is not comfortable and it might have to do with her suffering from anxiety. Why would she like something shes not comfortable with? Would you? By the way shes not like this in all interviews. Her interviews with seth meyers are entertaining, probably because shes comfortable with him.

Kate was the first star trek female captain. She was a big influence to alot of women roles as it open the eyes of star trek fans tons woman captain. Y'all need to check star trek Voyager. At least give it a chance. And also look at star trek pilot and how she made Voyager possible.
So I'm new to the OITNB fandom (I just started watching it but I LOVE it I'm at season 4 in just two weeks) and Taylor is just like Piper, but to see Kate to see speak without a Russian accent is soooo trippy, like... so strange.

Not really. Piper is more uptight, loud and the kind of person that you always see and hear about, either she goes grabbing for the spotlight and attention or it somehow follows her. taylor is more quite, private, hidden. And I think she likes it that way. I think shes someone whose actually afraid, for lack of a a better word, of fame and attention.
Piper is the type of person who would use every type of social media and probably post something every hour or day. Taylor barely uses her social media. Taylor is definitely, at least to me, kind of mysterious.

What a good question about OINTB playing differently to a non-american audience. I'm Ukrainian and my perception of the main characters - Piper and Alex is different from that of many American viewers. I've never found this couple 'awesome', 'hot', 'vauseman forever', 'best love story', etc. Imho, they are so self-obsessed, traitorous, manipulative, flighty, disorderly. It's not love when you put your 'beloved' one at permanent risk, constantly playing the Russian roulette with him/her. I hoped by the end of the show Piper would become stronger and wiser, more antifragile, speaking in terms of brilliant Nassim Taleb. I'm Touched by the love story of Miss Claudette and her friend (strength and faithfulness of this character are so impressive), Red's principles (no drugs, etc), Poussey's personality (her singing brought me to tears).

***** Your reply would be the same as mine. Piper and Alex bore me. I watch the show for the other characters. I don't care one iota about Piper/Alex and their back and forth stuff. Not all Americans like it, but it is true what Kate says about Netflix presenting it....she means they have pushed the envelope a little closer to the edge. I liked Miss Claudette, too. She and Red are OG's (and later on, Vee) and I wish they had developed that relationship more with background.

Why does everyone think "Red", played by the acturess Kate Mulgrew, is Russian? She is an American actress, has been on the screen and Broadway for the past 40 years. She was Captain Janeway on Star Trek Voyager for 7 years, has rarely gone without doing something, but she has never had a Russian accent until OITNB. All you have to do is type her name in the search box here and it will pull up a LOT of videos from over the years where you can hear her speaking in her normal voice. She was a smoker for years, and has the husky voice from it. But otherwise, she just has a regular American English accent like me and everyone else here. She just does a decent Russian accent for her character of Red.

Try looking at her name...Kate Mulgrew (?) and read about her. She pulls off a decent Russian accent, but I still hear the real Kate mixed in there.
+Diane G Well honestly, she does the stereotypical Russian accent, it sounds like an American trying to sound Russian, and I'm not even remotely Russian. But come on, without bashing Americans, in general this is believable for them because all the movies they've grown up watching based on the cold war etc it's usually that stereotypical Russian accent so they are under the impression that she is Russian, they wouldn't know the difference, plus she has red hair, reds are commies right? There are a couple of other examples, like Americans trying to sound German or Swedish. In their ears it sounds right because that's all they know. With their reference points it adds up. For somebody else it's complete bullocks and not even close. Also many OITNB fans seem to think of her as the character she portrays and not the actress Kate Mulgrew, and apparently doesn't care enough to look her up to learn more about the person behind the role. This behaviour is in general rather common on various movies and tv shows and it's, most of the time, not the brightest bunch exhibiting this behaviour.

Kate is of Irish heritage, and we do have the gift of gab! I was forever in trouble at school for talking instead of listening, it was every report card 12 years. Then my nursing school teacher said I had "diarrhea of the mouth" because I talked too much during lessons. She was German, my husband is German, and they do NOT have the gift of gab. Usually, we don't realize we're aggravating others. Plus, I always made good grades, lol..

Do you have any source on them actually liking each other? I mean, the standard reply is always " is such a great actor and we had a lot of fun working together". Kate multiple times downplayed the drama with Jeri Ryan when she got the Seven of Nine part, and if one digs a little deeper it's quite easy to find that there was a huge conflict and that Kate was acting like an asshole. I mean it even brought Garrett Wang to tears talking about it... And in this video, around 1:26, if looks could kill, Kate would be dead.
It's a shame, I grew up watching Star Trek: Voyager, Kate was for a long time my favorite captain, and I really really liked her. But watching interviews and conventions where Kate constantly interrupts people and then tries to be funny or smart, and drops random crap so the focus and the limelight stays on her. She really gets on my nerves and I can totally understand why co-workers wouldn't be too fond of her, as a person. And I think it's quite apparent that alot of co-stars feel this way about her as well, judging from facial expressions etc whenever she cuts them off or goes on one of her random rampages.

I only discovered OITNB this year and watched all seven seasons in a row in two weeks. From the fifth season onwards, I was pretty depressed. After the end of the seventh season, I cried for an hour.
Everything was portrayed so well and realistically. Piper was also played really well. Which is why a lot of people didn't like Piper. But in prison, I wouldn't tend to act super sweet either. So great performance by Taylor Schilling, I watch a lot of her other productions too! >>> google translate, deutsch to englisch

Kate Mulgrew's "russian" accent in the show is fake, her "russian" lines are just terrible to listen to. She agreed to be Galina 'RED' in the show because most of the fans don't understand Russian language. What I am trying to say is : Kate Mulgrew speaks Russian like Chinese immigrant speaks English after 2 months in US.

Pity that J. Kohan didn't care about millions of Russian speaking fans of OITNB. She did a mistake hiring Kate Mulgrew, because her Russian is so awful and difficult to understand. I don't believe that this show would be worse if Galina RED could speak Russian and speak English with authentic Russian accent.
