- Joe Cunningham from HeyUGuys interviews Taylor Schilling and Piper Kerman for their TV show Orange is the New Black which can be seen on Netflix.
The show is based on the book by Piper Kerman who went to prison 10 years after commiting a drug offence in the USA.
Plot: Piper Chapman is a public relations executive with a career and a fiance when her past suddenly catches up to her. In her mid-30s she is sentenced to spend time in a minimum-security women's prison in Connecticut for her association with a drug runner 10 years earlier. This Netflix original series is based on the book of the same title. Forced to trade power suits for prison orange, Chapman makes her way through the corrections system and adjusts to life behind bars, making friends with the many eccentric, unusual and unexpected people she meets.

No they don't Piper is clearly older (in her 40's) and Taylor is clearly younger (in her 20s). There is a 15 year age difference and with how things are these days it isn't unrealistic for them to be mother and daughter.

Incredible show, loved every second. I'm so happy Netflix got their hands on this otherwise this show would have died in its prime on regular television. So much talent and the relationship between the characters is so real with interesting stories behind them. The accepting wife of the transgender, the 19 year old drug, addict who pays her debts, the Russian woman with the mob. They did such a good job of making this show so funny but grounded in reality. Can't wait for the 2nd season

Piper in the show doesn't have a window burned into her arm, you're mixing her up with Alex & Alex's tat is fake just FYI, Laura Prepon doesn't have it IRL. In the show Piper has a fish tattoo on the back of her neck in S1 but then it later seasons it mysteriously disappears 🤔 I think that the real Piper may actually have the fish tattoo but I'm not sure tbh. I read the book but it was awhile ago.
Gigi8877 they weren't saying a tattoo, they said a burn, from when those girls burned the Nazi sign into paper's arm, and Red made it into a window instead.

Hooked on this series now. I had no idea about it being a real story. That makes it even better.
Season 2 needs to HURRY up and get here. The end of season 1 has left me WANTING more. I love how this show really lets people inside "the criminal mind". Someone who messed up, got caught, and are now just trying to survive in a rough, unfair, crazy, manipulated world. If you couldn't imagine, now you can. We should NEVER judge, cause it could happen to anyone.
They're almost identical is stunning, only big difference is that Taylor is taller

Let's say just this, show is very good, Taylor is great.
She's very annoying
it's so weird to see those two sitting next to each other, it's amazing how much they look alike and how similar they act (they are quite different, but some of their actions are basically the same, e.g. the way they lay their hands on their legs)
As a real Federal Correctional Officer I found many things within the series to be spot on. The uniforms for example are identical to the real ones, with some subtle (albeit very corny) change to them. There was much that was sensationalized for television purposes... but I have to give credit to the attention to detail for most of the staff & facility setting..
I even paused some of the computer screen scenes (like when that one inmate was released instead of another) and even that looked legit! Like a real prison file.

Going to the prison for a decade old crime of laundering drug money can certainly not be called boring. I am glad that the real Piper didn't have to go through more than what she already had to. Of course the adaptation of a memoir for a Netflix series would require to spice up the quotient of the story.
I hope it has as many seasons as weeds. Jenji Kohan is an amazing director.

I almost died with that intro.
I got my hopes up and actually believed that they would keep the novel separate from the movie but I don't think this is the case, as Laura Prepon is no longer a regular character. I think it'll mean that it will be more centred on Piper's relationship with the other characters in the prison, which is good, but ALEX :(

awesomo9 I Totally agree i liked her when she was new and all innocent (not literally). But now she's dark i think she is amazing, when she talked to Soso and Dina that was awesome. i hope to see more of those 'temper tantrums' in season 3

The real Piper learned very much in prison. She is honest and has spent her life since helping women in prison and learned a ton about what needs to be changed in our prison system. Also, I've tweeted with her and listened to many interviews with her and she is VERYnice

OITNB is the best! can't wait for season 2!! Taylor Schilling is a great actress she also stars in Atlas Shrugged Part 1 (available on Netflix) (awesome book by Ayn Rand) and plays the lead Dagny Taggart very well Ayn Rand would be pleased....

Does anyone know the significance of the title "orange is the new black" or perhaps the inspirations for it???? :/
From an interview at the back of the book:
"The title is obviously a play on the classic orange jumpsuit that prisoners wear...But it also refers to the fact that women are the fastest growing segment of the prison population in this country. Most of those rising prisoner numbers are women who are non-violent drug offenders."
When something is trendy, people will say, " *blank* is the new black" to signify it's the cool new thing. So like the person said above, since so many people end up in prisons these days, they're using orange to reference the jumpsuits
In this country blacks were considered by many to be the lowest of the low for the longest time.....but the title suggests that those who are incarcerated, no matter their race are now replacing African Americans as being the bottom of the barrel....
then why is it?

I watched 3 seasons and started season 4 and became so depressed with the lives of the inmates that i had to stop watching it. Of course I was binge watching it so I’m sure that had a big part of it.

As would be expected when you compare tv to reality. Its only based on the book, shes allowed the tv show to have free creativity of it, which is great because Vauseman needs to continue to be a thing!

She’s inspired by several characters
The real Piper is actually much different than the character, just like the show is much different from the actual story. If you read the book, you'll see that the real Piper didn't seem to learn anything from her sentence, and she didn't really change. The real Piper didn't have any of the interesting problems that she has in the show. Her husband was very supportive of her the whole time, she never had any serious issues with other inmates, etc. She's a bore compared to the show.

Piper Chapman is (surprisingly) one of the *least* interesting characters on the show, liked her at first but I grew to find her really annoying and boring. The other characters have soo overshadowed her that I don't even care for her story or her love roller-coaster anymore
Ethan Radd For me it is the most interesting character. I mean in the beginning we can see that she was living kind of boring, usual life.. But in the prison she becomes definitely different person, because there's nobody who commands her how to live (like her mother). Piper looks scary and fragile at first, but she grows as a person. She learns how to deal with life, how to defence herself, how to survive. And this character developement and her mood and feelings roller-coaster is very engrossing. Of course other characters and their stories and flashbacks are also very exciting and brilliant.
i agree, the others had real shit going but then we have to come back to this unlikable person and her self inflicted 'woe is me's. i think this character takes something away from the really good interesting story lines
The kind of love her sometimes-hate her sometimes feeling that you get with Piper Chapman is completely intentional by the creator. The whole point is that she's a privileged person in prison and is amongst all other prisoners there who have other life experiences. The fact that sometimes you actually feel bad for her because she's so stupid and big-headed that she ends up in trouble all the time, is intentional. And the feeling of punching her in the face when she's so stupid and mean, is also intentional.

The real Alex is Catherine Wolters. They didn't have sex in prison and only in the same prison facility briefly in Chicago.
Piper had a lesbian girlfriend but her name is not Alex, it is nora. Nora didn't want what her name to be used in the series so they changed it, is what I read. Piper's love story with Alex is not 100% the same as it was with Nora in the book.

Nora wasn't her real name. That was just the name Piper used in the book to conceal the identity of the real people. Her real name is Catherine Cleary Wolters.
