  • Devils Hole sounds like a scary place, but it's really a sanctuary. Conor Knighton take us to this tranquil place near Death Valley National Park, a refuge for one of the rarest fish in the world.

Apparently, Devils Hole is also important because it can detect earthquakes from as far away as Japan, way before any tsunami or quakes reaches American shores. Whenever there's an earthquake, the water rapidly rises and falls (Probably deals with plate tectonics).

It's the panda bear of fish. Seemingly created to go extinct and only through intervention kept alive. They haven't even been able to discover how to keep it alive in captivity. Though they did find out when it was moved to a similar habitat that instead of breeding with others like itself, it bred with a different species of pupfish, creating a hybrid that was successful in its new home. Of course, making a hybrid was not exactly ideal since saving the pure species is the whole idea. It is a damn cute stubby little guy, and its electric deep blue color is gorgeous. I'd love to keep a tank full of them. Heck, I'd give them a 2000 gallon tank at 93 degrees regardless of expense, but thats highly unlikely to ever happen because it's so darn touchy. Then there is the mystery of its only home in Death Valley, the Devils Hole. A location which scientists now think may be connected to an underground ocean/cavern system stretching from South America all the way underground to the midwest of the USA. With depths exceeding 1000 feet, I can't imagine a more mysterious and frightening place. This might be the location where real-life mythological sea monsters dwell. There be monsters here. Supposedly at the bottom of the hole there is a small opening that at times becomes an underwater whirl pool with unreal suction ready to vaccum the unlucky that venture to close to the hole into an ocean no one has yet explored. Makes my heart beat hard just thinking about it. A real-life underground OCEAN... IMAGINE!

So you think something ate the kids and is able to survive in there eating sporadically just once every, oh 60 years or so?? It would have to be big and would require a massive amount of calories daily to sustain its mass. There simply is not the ecosystem in there to have such an apex predator. Those pupfish are on their own and have just enough food (the algae on their small rock shelf in the sunlight) to sustain their small population. It's a microsystem in balance. Go checkout Ash Meadows just down the road. There you will find a few dozen other endemic plant and animal species found nowhere else on earth. The great inland sea that once was dried up (Salt Lake is all that's left) and species became trapped in little pockets all over the desert where they evolved to survive their unique environment.

Some industrial grave pumps and a very large well or just pipes into the hole (take remaining fish out an add to the farm) and see if the land can be restored? Also probably find 2 bodies eventually an bring them home? It could lead to an underground lake that rain will naturally help keep filled? I'm not a farmer but I dont see why if they already made a fish farm...they couldnt transfer the fish from the real hole,to the farm an start pumping an see how much water is really down there. Well you see, here’s the thing about efforts to protect one single species. It’s never just about that one species. Let’s look at monarch butterflies. Conservation efforts for monarchs don’t just help monarchs. The milkweed planted, the areas protected, it helps a wide variety of insects and small animals. The pupfish is important because as barren as it seems, Death Valley is an ecosystem with over 400 species of animal and 1,000 species of plant, and having a charismatic animal like the pupfish there to remind people of that helps keep them from paving over all of that.

I read a study that said they were able to recreate the mutations in other pupfish that the devil's hole pupfish have by increasing the temperature and giving it a couple generations. If that's true then there wouldn't be any good reason to have those fences around that hole and more people could explore those caves and see how massive they truly are. Now THAT would be awesome!

@@derekschinke2512 Well that is the end goal of any conservationist to eradicate any if not all invasive species. So they spend millions of taxpayers money to recreate a habitat. Oh, they did not tell you about the lake right next to Devils Hole? Why not? They have expanded the pup fish’s habitat into the lake as well. So what is their real agenda? Their agenda is to control people through the endangered species act.

They are surviving. They use the fish to control people via false information. Control the water; control the people. They conservationists have an agenda: Communism through projecting false claims about plants, fish and other endangered/threatened species. Just ask Harry Reid how he got all his millions! He put thousands of people out of work; then stole their land from them. Does Nature Conservancy ring a bell? It is pure genius to use plants, insects and any other endangered species to steal peoples land and livelihoods. Then turn around and profit from it.

Hey, let's save this cute fishy fish. Which is a great idea. But, maybe they didn't need saving but just left alone?
Put on all this rubber & plastic garb, go down with huge spotlights, flail around the fish's habitat, maybe stab some crap with these long poles, put some plastic tags all over everything... That should do it. Look we saved the, whoops. Sorry they're all dead. You bad people that aren't environmentalists, "like we are", killed these poor fish. Dang you!

Do you people feel something is off? Ok these fish are great! But why the millions to preserve these fish? We Flippin over harvest our oceans. Species go extinct every day. Yet we dump millions to preserve these fish? Yet we give squat to help people, who are suffering also. Would these fish be as concerned with our demise? Or would they just acquiesce to life without thought? Something isn't right about this whole deal. What would happen if the fish went extinct? Ever ask that question? Do they serve some ecological balance which threatens our existence? Or would maybe investing in our youth. Who might produce a noble prize winning scientist. Which would invent a concept that would save all life in danger of extinction. That guy who just loves those fishies is a bit too involved? No kids? No wife? If yes? Hmmm, how happy is that union? Since fish are reason he gets up in the morning. Good God we've devalued our humanity. We only have ourselves to blame. If something was to threaten humanity, how important are those fish? They wouldn't even know their own extinction. We would! Yet Do nothing! We have a very warped view of the universe, and our place in it.

It’s not just about the fish is the thing. Death Valley has over 400 species of animal. By declaring one off limits, you make it easier to protect the rest of them too. That’s how a lot of conservation works, actually.
