- On my way to Washington State I decided to go visit some friends in Bend Oregon and go check this place out.
I loved this trail. I wish I had brought my shade umbrella, it was very hot and exposed. The expansive views of the Cascade range was so lovely. The glaciers and volcanos made me feel I was in the kitchen of the earth.
The heat zaps me always and so I was slow on this walk especially after spending 14 hours in the car the day before. When I got to the lake a gentleman congratulated me and said ‘I should be proud of myself’ and ‘that this was the best thing for me’. This feels like condescension to my ego but it’s not. He was obviously trying to be encouraging and judging my weight and fitness and thinking that my larger self was a struggling beginner hiker…. If only he knew. Hahaha.
There are many trailheads for reaching this lake. The road to the one I chose was 45 mins of very harrowing line choice, milk crate sized pointy rocks, comically deep ruts and car sized potholes. That dirt road was the spiciest one I’ve taken my midsized suv down. Do not try to drive a car. You definitely need high clearance and maybe 4wd.
Permits are required for both backpacking and day hiking. They are available from Recreation.gov For $1. They can be reserved months in advance and also 2 days in advance. I didn’t find it to hard to get mine 2 days before my hike.
This was a pretty easy 6 mile round trip to the top of the ridge. There were a couple steep short stretches but in general this is a very mellow and easy to follow trail. The gravel and scree is quite slick and I found poles really useful on the steeper part of the descent.

Wow, another beautiful area presented to us by that intrepid traveler, Ms. Nikki K. I really enjoy your travels.
What a beautiful place. I have been backpacking on the Western side of Broken Top, Green Lakes area and that is also amazing. Thank you for filming and sharing this hike. I need to do this one before I'm too old. 🙂
Your camera and camera work are amazing. Will be playing this on the treadmill
This was a beautiful trek. Did see a lot of dry lake beds? Loved the views. Take care and thanks for sharing. ❤
Cool video, thanks for sharing.
Looks like mars!
If you go in winter the lake is even more cyan!
Mankind doesn't stop to think about the damage they cause
If you don’t mind, what month did you do this? I’m going in a week but hopefully the water won’t be brown.
