On the evening of November 6th the Canadian jazz community paid honour to one of its living legends and cultural heroes - iconic jazz guitarist Ed Bickert. Here, some of the performers who joined in the celebration- Oliver Gannon, Jake Langley, Lorne Lofsky, Chris Norley, and Michael Occhipinti, take a moment to pay tribute to Bickert's influence on themselves and on the jazz scene at large.

I saw Ed Bickert purely by chance, having no idea who he was,at an english jazz festival back around 79/80.
He is without doubt the finest jazz guitarist I've ever seen.....
can't think of anyone else that comes even close.

Greatness isn't about tons of information .Greatness is about poetry and Ed is our poet.

I grew up in Pennsylvania and my dad was always telling me about this guy named Ed Bickert. When I move to Canada in the mid-80s I got a chance to see him. When I got home I called my dad right away. One of the best guitar players that I have ever seen. Got a chance to play with Lorne Lofsky a few times, what a joy to play with a master on guitar and he keeps you on your toes.

I saw Ed Bickert on tv about 30 years ago I was a young guitarist, I couldn’t believe his playing and the tone he got from a Tele and a little orange Roland Cube amp. He made me want a Tele and to learn voice leading.

Fair to say. . . we miss him 'round here. Thankfully, and blessedly, those in this tribute carry some of Ed with them, in their playing.

When I thinking of Ed Bickert, I think of VERY smooth comping. The voice leading is such that it doesn’t sound percussive: rather, it sounds FLUID. You don’t hear the right hand attack. RIP

I think Ed bickert invented his own way of playing on the guitar, but he borrowed a lot from the piano. In fact, when I first heard him play I thought it was a fender Rhodes and then I realized it was a guitar player and then I started to listen to him, and he's just amazing. No one has really described the theoretical overview of his playing, which is a shame because most guitar players myself included just rely on a hodgepodge of chord, shapes and melody improvisations that might be memorized to a certain extent, but he makes the guitar sound like it's just so fresh and modern.

I wish the Toronto jazz community would convince Ed Bickert to come out of retirement.

It's a beautiful tune from 1960 called "Estate" by Bruno Martino (music) and Bruno Brighetti (lyrics). Ed and Lorne played it on the "This Is New" cd with Neil Swainson and Jerry Fuller.

Thank you Chris Norley. I have been trying to identify the name of this song for some time now. I heard your performance of this for the Ed Bickert tribute again recently and I have not been able to get it out of my head for the past 2 days! You play beautifully.

Yeah none of those guys comes anywhere near his style. To begin with you have to have a guitar that has a lot of sustain and that’s why I think he used a tele with a humbucker.
