    Zach is back with one of our favorite questions: IS IT WORTH IT? Today he's checking out a classic, the Roland TB-303, an analog bass-line synth that is currently valued for resale around $2,000-$3,000. The 303 was integral in the creation of acid and techno music, though it's distinct sound has a presence across many genres of music, often paired with other Roland classics like the TR-808 or (seen in this video) TR-606. The TR-303 is not the most intuitive synthesizer, and the budget-level reproductions we compare it with here (the Behringer TD-3 and Roland TB-03) are true to form. Take a listen and tell us your opinion, is it worth it? Or does one of the current digital or analog recreations cover the same ground?

    Great video zach. I remember the tb303 selling between £100-£150 here in london uk back in 1985. Around the 90’s it started rising due to acid house music & techno and the 303 breakbeat in the mid nineties which shot up the Original prices up to nearly £1000 (1999). I got the rebirth 338 software version in 1996 which included two tb303 replications plus the 808 & 909 which were great 😊

    The tb3 and td3 are nice toys, but that original 303 sound when tweaking the filters is where the clones fall off a cliff. The RE-303 is the closest you will get to the original.

    I have Roland TB3 and it beats all clones in terms of UI. Also, it has more synth power under the hood, rather than just regular acid lines. So glad to grab that one, instead of any other machine. Also TB3 is perfect for live performances.

      Din Sync has released a true replica 303 called RE-303 (not a clone). All fhe parts are i interchangeable with the original so it can also be used for repairing/refreshing an originals.

    I have both, the Roland TB-03 and the Behringer TD-3 and I must say they are both good machines... Good EQ'ing and compressor usage is the trick on using these and other analog or digital instruments in a mix... YOU CAN MAKE MAGIC HAPPEN!!!

    I own the TD-3-BK and the original TB-303. With the price that the Roland is going for right now and considering how bloody finicky it is to program--it's trickier than the TD-3 despite the two units being identical that way--the $4, 000 original is absolutely not worth it when the TD-3 sounds identical with a bit of adjustment to the cutoff.

    I have a TB-303, RE-303, TT-303, TD-3 and the MO and none sound like the tb-303. Close, but the organic warm squelchiness can’t be matched…. The TB sounds more musical too…. The clones do a good job though.

    The TR-606 needs def. some servicing ... besides the TB-03, check the TB-3 too ;-)

    What are your thoughts on knob position matching? Behringer claims (in the comments of the loopop video comparing many 303-alikes) that knob positions aren't the same, and they need to be slightly different in order to actually match the 303, IIRC because the 303s themselves had a lot of factory variance and it was impossible to get one approximate match.

    If you are a purest go for it. For me no thanks , I owned a xoxbox clone which cost nearly £400 UK at the time. Still there was something missing from it. I would go for an 03 or even the td 03 when its been processed in the mix how many can tell or even care how much you spent. Having said that if I was offered an original at a reasonable price , I would snap it up .

    No offense but it's supposed to be analog. So far Behringer wins. I own both the TB-3 and the TD-3 and I like the sound of the TD-3 just as much as my TB-3 and the Behringer is way cheaper.

    I think I love every 303 clone except the Behringer. They all have their own charm, and they're all awesome first synths. But the TD-3 is definitely the least-interesting one you can get. It's so ugly and aggressively cheap-looking and cheap-feeling. Especially the translucent ones. And it can't run on batteries. And it's actually bigger than the original. It's just really bad. As much as I hate the Micro-B power on the pre-2021 boutiques, the TB-03 is good. And if you don't hate the light-up Christmas colors, the TB-3 Touch Bassline is actually good. I blame Audiopilz for making me like it. If you get a Behringer at least get the TD-3-MO. If you want something cheap, I think you'd be happier with a Volca Bass or Nubass than a TD-3. They have personality, and a less painful sequencer, and they run on batteries.
    The only reason to get the Behringer TD-3 is if you think it'd be funny to have something that looks like a toy. Get the see-thru purple one and you can surprise people that it actually sounds pretty good. 😂

    Great video Congrats! Well im listening in my L100s and i can hear the difference between the 3 , Tb 303-Extra fat and crispy so so detail emotional sound (this why it cost 3000) .The Boutique i think lack of emotion very boomy bass and no definition.The Td-3 really ok for a 150 dlls istrument but no extend in bass response and no chirpi chip at all. But i think the TD-3 its very ok for me and my wallet send me 3.

    Even though the TB03 is digital it does the squelch and the rubbery acid well, as soon as the TD3 entered my headphones I knew right away something else was playing, it sounds like a bad VST 303, it actually sounds more digital than the Roland TB03 to me, when you cranked it high or low it doesn't hold up, that's exactly what made the TB303 so special because you could really push it and it sounded amazing.

    td-3 is more... cartoon sound?
    Yeah it sounds cheap but just in another way
    Also I tried TR09 and have TR909
    909 is different sound too
    Exactly - digital beats you right in the face! TR909 is more clean!
    BTW 303 is not a 40+ yrs old instrument. IT'S YOUNGER :3

  • @user-yl1oo6ng3g
    @user-yl1oo6ng3g 9 месяцев назад

    To be honest: No, it´s not worth it. Maybe for collectors of the classic machines, as an investment but considering the age of the 303 which is 42 years old now, the limited sounds it can generate and it´s pricetag at the year of it´s production, no, it is not really worth to cost 3000 - 5000 bucks and even more. There are some newer machines which are also useful for acid like the TD-3 or Acidlab Bassline 3 and some other.

  • @michaeldulsky8492
    @michaeldulsky8492 Месяц назад

    Not today! A TB-303 is not worth it. Why would anyone pay that much when you can get a TD-3 that's brand new, looks and sounds the same, works exactly the same and also has MIDI. I've owned both. TD-3 is great! Save your time and money. Be smart.

    Does it really matter I mean nobody has ever released a track of a record directly from the output of any of these devices serious producers know you cant hear the difference in a mix. People tell you different cant be taken serious and haven’t got a clue about music production
