I think I heard somewhere that some slow-hand axemen (axe-persons?) on limited incomes have been buying modestly priced Strats and then pimping them out with premium accoutrements. Isn't this what Yamaha have done here? So you get a brilliant guitar at a very decent price. Fun fact: Kurt Colbain had Seymour Duncan pickups on all his guitars - although, he smashed many of them up on stage (it had been done already by Pete Townsend)

I personally love the shape of a Pacifica more than a stratocaster. They play incredibly well. I just wish they had better colors! I love the stuff on the 112v line, but once you get to the higher end models, the colors start to look a bit funky for my tastes.

    • @theblytonian3906
      @theblytonian3906 Год назад +1

Share your perspective re the shape. Yamaha fixed Fender design aesthetics and functionality they would have in Stratocaster v2 were they able. Fender have been and are stuck between a rock and a hard place making changes lest they p1ss off the stuck in the mud traditionalists. The VIIFMs of the 600 series have been largely superseded in 2022 by the predominant opaques and opaque metallics of the 600 VIIX series. Love the 600s in their FMs (disclaimer I have one in TBL). Not a huge fan of their current colour range of opaques in the 600 Series. Not traditional, but you might like one. I think Vintage White or Old Violin Sunburst would go down in the range, but then they wouldn't be distinguishable from the lower segment's 112V or 311H, and people are snobs. Most elegant, tasteful traditional livery in the 600 Series for my money is the 611V in Tobacco Sunburst. Not available in the 612 sub-series unfortunately.

I was surprised that I prefer the 112v tone over the 612. I'm thinking it must be the high output of seymour Duncans compared to the Alnico V's in the 112V, which has more of the classic Fender chime to it. It's shocking how much value is still in the 112V. I think I'd prefer it over my MIM strat.

The Pacifica range of guitars are generally consistantly decent instruments that offer good value for money at their relevant price points. I have played several Yamaha guitars and basses and have always felt that what I got was a lot better than I would get from other brands for the same cost. Their consistant quality levels is a big part in why they used to be the main reccomendation of guitar teachers around the world.

To clarify, Yamaha's Pacifica still is. There are other potential contenders from several other brands today, but Yamaha's Pacifica is the easy sell without need for elaboration or rationalisation to the student because of its profile, legendary reputation, overall suitability, versatility and excellence in respect of all of those qualities.

I chose the same bridge pickup with a couple SSL-6's in my Sterling Cutlass and wired it so position 3 is bridge and neck. With the coil split positions it's the most versatile guitar I have. The treble bleed curcuit, orange drop cap and hand picked DiMarzio pots that are quite a bit under .500k have balanced the tones out very nicely.

I noticed Yamaha upped the street price for the 612 models on April 1 (Q2 2022) from $680 to $750. So I bought a used one online that same day! The 612 series still has more to offer and at a lower price than a new Player series Fender: (1) HSS->SSS coil split, (2) locking tuners, (3) pop-in whammy bar/tremolo arm, and (4) Graph Tec nut & string trees, all with top brand parts. (I see Alamo still has this guitar for the lower price. Someone should grab it!!! It's a beauty!) The 212 series has not experienced a price increase (...yet, still at $380), but those don't have these upgrades. It's still a great bang for the buck.

This was a really excellent and interesting video for me. The reason is that I believe I may have had a Yamaha strat copy in the mid 1980s at school, but I just can't remember. I do have a couple of photos of me in my band but you can't read what is on the head. It would have been the cheapest model available, not great, but I had a lot of fun with it. Would Yamaha have done other strat copies in the 1980s with a different name? Anyway, it was really interesting to see how good these sounded and wow - it's amazing what teenagers have available to them for a very reasonable cost, which is great too.

Yamaha's problem with the Pacifica is that it has become viewed primarily as a strat for beginners, no matter the quality of the Pacifica in question. This one has nice pickups, for example, and is obviously a decent guitar. I personally don't like guitars that look like jeans, but I'm sure this does the job.

Parents for their teen kid's music or "I want" adolescent beginners with a typical five minutes attention span & enthusiasm before 'the next cool thing', Yamaha;s PAC012 Gigmaker pack is perfect. The guitar actually plays quite nicely, and will definitely get the job done. A 112V or 311H for adults and those with more predictable commitment and cash to spend. Either will take any guitarist well beyond, yet save a ton of cash to redirect elsewhere into more amp or the guitar they know they want for the genre they are interested in once they have some hands on, exposure & knowledge. 600 series is beautiful and capable. Nice to have, but much more than one needs or has to spend to achieve initially. Professional level instrument for a relatively trifling spend. Admittedly I have a positive bias toward Yamaha bias although personally owning and playing other brand instruments too. e.g. Ibanez, Gretsch, Cort.

A lot less than a Fender Player. Does it sound like a Strat? No. It sounds better. Thanks for the great presentation, Cooper.

if you'd like to hear someone make one of these Pacifica scream check out a band called Asterism and their song Church (all over youtube). Not sure what model Pacifica she is playing in the video but she (their guitarist) has melted down a 611 before.

Yes but it's a signature model well above $1000. It's called the Pacifica 1611 Mike Stern.

It's all in the hands of the master Cooper!!!! You could put strings on a shoe box and make it sound like a Gibson!!!

Maybe people don’t like the necks? The fingerboard radius is very much on the flatter end of the spectrum.

Okay this a complex issue. My main blue guitar is a modified Yamaha Pacifica. I left my Pacifica with stock pickups but had extensive reworking with fret works and total electronics replacement. It was the best 500 I’ve ever spent. My guitar from the luthier that worked on my guitar transformed my basic baby into a bad boy and is easily the most beautiful and enjoyable guitar to play. Here is my point; the Yamaha has a-lot going for it initially but the electronics are bad and scratchy, the pickups are fantastic, the neck and body balance are top notch., but my fret design was done by a mega pro and that is the difference. If you can find a top pro willing to modify you’re guitar out there like my Pacifica you would only know the difference, from any other or factory whatever. My Pacifica will play better and be more comfortable than all. Facts top tech well worth the modification process. I upgraded the electronics and the fret work is unstoppable amazing.

  • @SeaDrive300

The problem with most Yamaha's is the weight; they are, generally speaking, HEAVY! The RevStars are great guitars, but they are all HEAVY! If I could find a Pacifica 612, at or under 7 pounds, I would buy it tomorrow...

I PLAYED ONE AT THE STORE. FOR A CHEAPO NEW GUITAR ITS ONE OF THE BEST. (I FOUND THE ONLY FLAW THE NECK BEING A BIT TOO "FLAT". NEEDS SOME "ROUNDING" TO IT. ALL THE NOTES SOUNDED GOOD BUT ITS A BIT MORE "WORK" TO RACE ON?) (GOOD FER "STRUMMER/CHORD PLAYERS"). FOR A "CHEAPO" THOUGH NOT BAD. BETTER IS THE "ERNIE BALL MUSICMAN". BOTH ARE DECENT GUITARS. (NO ONE ON U TUBE CAN EVER BEAT ME ON NOTHIN!...SO I KNOW KIDDIES).

Always with Pacificas it's a vintage/modern blend - with every model being dramatically cheaper than the equivalent spec in a Fender.
Yes it's 'inspired by a Strat' like many other brands that people don't feel the need to point it out - like a Music Man Cutlass and many others. The Pacifica has been around now in this same shape since the early '90s and is a classic in its own right.
