The Attempted Presidency Of Huey Long | Alternate History

  • Former Louisiana Governor, Huey Long, was once a figure of great controversy and interest. During the Great Depression of the late 1920's and early 1930's, Long achieved prominence on a populist and seemingly socialistic platform which advocated redistribution of wealth, and much more. Often portrayed through history as an abuser of power, a misguided but good-intentioned politician, or even an aspiring dictator, there is much reason for the confusion surrounding this fascinating man who dreamed of bringing his policies to the national stage by winning the Presidential election of 1936, but never had the chance. What if in an alternate timeline, things went differently?

Huey Long is fascinating to me. And not just for his politics. But for his love for his home state which is where I was born and for his love of his alma mater LSU. In fact he had so much love for LSU that in 1934, Huey Long helped the LSU student body at the time be able to afford round trip tickets to Nashville, Tennessee to go see LSU take on Vanderbilt in college football action. Ironically enough LSU won that game 29-0.

You mean his war chest? Huey Long had a thing where all government employees were required to donate a small portion of their salaries to the war chest to fund his personal projects, such as providing free textbooks for Louisiana elementary schools, acquiring oil and gas to power industrial products like cars in the state, or building tens of thousands of miles of roads so people could actually get around the state, along with plenty of new schools, bridges, hospitals, and other public infrastructure, as previously, Louisiana had pretty much none of that, especially roads. Essentially, Huey Long turned Louisiana from one of the poorest states in the Union to a moderately prosperous state. Now, did he do it in incredibly controversial ways, including consolidation of power, strongarming his political opponents, and the aforementioned war chest, among other things, but you can't deny this man did a lot of good for his state, during a time when it should've floundered, withered, and died.

The main thing about Louisiana is we hate authoritarians. The Cajun people would barter and trade each other or outright give lagniappe to those in need. We were socialist in nature due to the struggles of being so poor and dealing with natural disasters. Long did raise the literacy but helped destroy the french heritage of the state and was apart of forcing people to speak english. He may have done programs to help people but became the elite he was fighting against. He even built the biggest capital building at the time to show off while trying to say it was part of his programs to help the everyman.

@@Dr_Disconnect same thing with the "creole new orleans" (refering to you comment on the destruction of Latin culture in LA). One thing that the video producer didn't discuss is that the cultural divide was basically Creole New Orleans (the big city urban center) & Acadiana vs Louisiana (anything north of Opelousas). Governors since Reconstruction have made it hard for Cajuns and New Orleans to keep their Latin based heritages.
Fyi... people tend to forget (maybe purposefully omit) that French, Italian, and Portuguese are Latin cultures along with their Spanish& Hispanic "cousins". New Orleans has all of the above.

    Scenarios for future Videos:
    - What if Frederick the Great and Maria Theresia married (maybe with the extra that these two had also a son who inheritated prussia and austria and Title of holy roman emperor)? This would lead to an Austro-Prussian Empire. You can split this timeline into one where Frederick and Maria had a son and one without a son. I would prefer the first timeline, because i think the second would change little to our timeline :)
    - What if Germany was unified with prussias greater german solution?
    - What if Prussia splitted up Austria after the German war and annexed all Habsburg lands into the new german empire?
    - What if germany backstabed Austria hungary with their war with serbia?
    - What if the 30 years war never happend?
    - What if America/the USA became a Monarchie, under Fredericks brothers, after their independence?
    - What if the Confederacy took over the whole USA and implemented slavery in the north?
    - What if Germany became communist after ww1?
    - What if the Qing Empire never fall/never was pushed around by the european powers (Opium wars n stuff)/never lost territory to russia, japan and the europeans
    - What if Belgium, Netherlands, Luxemberg and Switzerland became Part of the german empire (maybe a Greater German Empire Version with Austria, Bohemia, South Tyrol, Slovenia and Istria+ Switzerland and the Low-Countries)?
    - What if germany formed earlier like france and britain, maybe due a sucessfull Roman conquest of germania or out of east frankia?
    - What if Maria Theresias father had a son?
    - What if the spanish Habsburg never died out?
-What if the HRE was able to hold nothern Italy?
    - What if Catholic christianity never gain influence and was replaced by Orthodox christianity?
    - What if the jews instead of the Christians became dominant in europe?
    - What if the US colonized the whole american continent (North and South)
    - What if Germany kept their Alliance with Russia?
    - What if an German royal House was on the Russian throne (Like in Britain)
    - What if Russia was able to colonize further into North America and was able to develope the Region?
    - What if Luxemburg didn't lost Bohemia?
    - What if imperial china never fell/ was able to colonize and westernize (Qing on it's largest extent) and so werr able to rival europa and japan/was able to hold them out of their sphere and never lost any territory at all, maybe where also able to grow
    - What if the Dual Empire between France and Germany happened? Thats a short scenario i saw on reddit. The scenario is like this: A french phyrrhic victory in the battle of Leipzig lead to a Hohenzoller-Bonaparte Alliance.
    - What if the catholics won the 30 years war?
    - What if the Netherlands lost their revolution?
    - What if there was never a spanish Austrian Habsburg split?
    - What if the Bourbons never took over spain?
    - What if no european power outside the HRE got involved in the 30 years war?
    - What if there was never the free and slave state system, instead slavery in all US States?
    - What if the Lands of Preußen and Pommerian got inherited by the Habsburgs?
    - What if Karl V never split up his lands between his brother and his son, instead giving Austria, Spain and the HRE to his son?
    - What if then Yuan Dynasty never fell/ stayed in power until the time where the Qing Dynasty took over?
    - What if China became Christian?
    - What if the allies conquered Berlin first?
    - What if the allies never supported the UDSSR during WW2 instead fight germany independend from Russia?
    - What if China joined the central powers in ww1?
    - What if Qing china industrialized in the 1800s?
    - What if the megaflora and megafauna never died out?
    - What if the oxygen in the atmosphere never decreased? (Would lead to giant insects)
    - What if Mexico won the mexican american war?
    - What if the first mexican empire never fall apart?
    - What if the Soviet-Union annexed Finland?
    - What if Russia beat germany in ww1?
    - What if the Qing Empire won their wars they had until WW1?
    - What if bulgaria won the balkan war?
    - What if italy joined the central powers?
    - What if Frederick the Great never existed?
    - What if Austria never get Hungary?

The Soviets would not have «undoubtedly fallen» if not for the efforts of the United States in WW2, the part where you stated that the USSR had only «just started» to industrialize after operation Barbarossa isn’t true, massive industrialization programes were initiated as early as 1928 in the USSR by Stalin to better compete with capitalist economies, often by any means necessary, including forcing work and permitting unbearable working conditions, which was common for the time not just in the USSR.
After operation Barbarossa, Stalin immediately ordered the strategic positioning of factories and other means of production eastward to protect them from the incoming nazi invasion, to say that the Soviet industry was crippled after operation Barbarossa is an utter falsehood.
The largest error presented by the notion that the Soviets could not have won the war if not for the efforts of the United States is a matter of relation, nobody denies that america’s efforts in the second world war were tremendously helpful to achieving an allied victory in *the west*, but the United States had very little if any involvement on the *eastern front* during WW2, and the truth is, that US involvement did not have nearly the impact as previously stated in the video on the eastern front, and to say that if FDR wasn’t elected president then the Soviets would have «undoubtedly» lost WW2 is entirely false.

Even so the concentration of power would have allowed him to do good things and generally that is the different between Democracies and Dictatorships as neither are inherently better than the other just different and dependent on the leadership, for example Democracies generally progress slower when it comes to issues due to divides but when they finally achieve that progress its harder to overturn whereas a Dictatorship allows a state to drastically progress in short time but makes it easier for the next person to overturn, in either case bad and good can happen it is just dependent on the person in charge

Now Long didn't fully agree with Catholics, but did try to appeal to them since they were a good portion of the Louisiana population. I imagine he'd be quite popular among Catholics, but wouldn't put forward explicitly pro-Catholic policies while in office.

My problem with what you've said about the Soviet Union is that if Long would find trade with Japan beneficial, wouldn't he also find it beneficial with the Soviets? In fact, maybe he would want to send more resources, knowing full well they would be desperate to win the war and would pay more than usual to recieve such. I'm suspecting a timeline where the US doesn't get involved in Europe in WW2 results in the Soviets taking all of mainland Europe- especially given that Hitler was in rough shape in 1945 already, I think it's plausible taking Berlin would be the final straw. If it wasn't, they'd just outright push into France.
Additionally, such a universe I think sets up a 3rd European War during the 1990's- I don't see a way that France would stay sustainably communist, they've never really had stable governments in the last couple hundred years. Perhaps a revolution would start in France, and they would team up with the British to attack what would effectively be the corpse of the USSR.

    • @danehammond5763
      @danehammond5763 3 года назад +4

@@dad9979 I think a Stalemate is *theoretically* possible, but I don't think it could really last. This is because I think by the time a stalemate could happen, the Soviets would've effectively been so far into Nazi Germany that it wouldn't be able to hold anything. Much of Germany is flat, and the Nazis were done for by this point, so it is likely they would fall back to the next defensible border- which would be the Rhine River. This has historically been a very defensible border- Napoleon, for example, knew this, and wanted to annex areas south of the Rhine into France. The problem with the Rhine as the border, though, is that there is practically none of Germany to hold this land. Not to mention that France already had a prominent, well known Communist leader around this time named Maurice Thorez, and if the front stalls here, it's decently likely that the Soviets would've protected him and tried to overthrow the remnants of Nazi Germany, and given how weak the Nazis were it is likely this would have worked.
The one area of Axis Europe that I don't think could've been taken would be Italy, which would have strong geographic borders, and Yugoslavian and Albanian communists liberated themselves so it's unlikely the Soviets could move through here. Perhaps in this universe, Mussolini is never overthrown in Italy given it is never invaded and he never has much pressure to back down. But Italy would effectively kind of be a North Korea, in that nobody would want to work with them. The Soviets would reluctantly prop up this state to avoid a revolution into British hands, and the British wouldn't want to work with Italy because they demanded insane territorial games (it's been discussed and proven that Italy wanted Egypt & Sudan just to mediate a British-German peace treaty if it came up).

I’m pretty sure Long would send more resources to Germany considering they are initially succeeding in the eastern front, there will be no point on giving aid to someone who is loosing and also since long is president instead of FDR the US wouldn’t give a crap about USSR after seeing it failing in 1941, US aid was vital for USSR’s war effort especially food imports as the Soviet’s main source of food supply is under enemy occupation. Cant have an army when your man power is starving to death. The Germans would succeed more on the spring attack due to soviet troops starving for food for months and lack of equipment, and Stalingrad would’ve fallen putting the Volga river on german control and the cacassus would fall tho this would also require Hitler not splitting the south army group, if he done this act then all oil reserves would be under the germans, the oil in the far east wasn’t discovered yet so the Soviet found themselves on the cluster fire situation as their tanks and planes would be useless. After a bloody defeat in the 2nd battle of Moscow (which no doubt would be the bloodiest) the Soviets would ask for peace

  • @kabobawsome
    @kabobawsome 3 года назад +3

The idea that the Soviets would have fallen without American support is ridiculous. The Soviets might have been so grateful at the time that they thought so, but hindsight makes it obvious Germany was doomed anyway. Germany simply did not have the manpower to support such a large scale invasion, and the Blitzkrieg method they were using doesn't work over such long distances. Moscow probably would have fallen, but the Soviets wouldn't have just surrendered at that point. Resistance to Mussolini's rule was growing in Italy, as was internal resistance in Germany. French resistance forces were, in real history, completely cut off from allied supply lines and were still growing stronger and bolder by the day. Germany's massive war-oriented economy started to falter, again, in real history, the moment the war machine slowed down, meaning that the Soviet campaign still would have been a huge blow to their economy.
Germany was doomed the moment they declared war on Poland. That tends to happen when you declare war on the entire planet.
