  • Have you ever wondered what it's like installing portholes in your van? Well this video will show you exactly how it went for me.
Installing windows is a pretty straight forward process, but we managed to use a little bit of our creativity when it came to the trim we ended up using for the portholes.
Here are a some of the items I used for the build.
    Porthole Window : amzn.to/2QerplJ
    Butyl Tape : amzn.to/30NjPQW
    Snap On Ductwork : www.zoro.com/z...
    Jigsaw : amzn.to/3eMv7gw
    Jigsaw Blades : amzn.to/3vyQPL6

Nice Dumb & Dumber reference with the jig saw blades, if that was intentional.
Looking to do porthole windows on my skoolie, liking your video and thanking my lucky stars that the idea came to me before I put in insulation and all that jazz. Glad yours wasn't a nightmare to work through, even though you had to get in there a little more than if you'd done it at the beginning.

For the inside, an alternative to the duct work fitting could possibly be a round wooden picture frame (gotten a little harder to come by in recent years, may have to look around thrift stores to find one... I imagine you could order them online).

We used flex seal around the edges of our MaxxFan cutout holes too! Then we used 3M 5200 marine sealant, and it blows Dicor away in terms of performance and longevity. You don't have to follow the crowd on these builds and it's great that you thought outside of the box.

My van came with one porthole in the rear drivers side door, and I was thinking of replacing it until now after seeing your video. Thanks for being awesome, Archervandogman.

Two round cushions (like the kind that might go on barstools) in the portholes will give you privacy at night, keep the light out and also provide insulation. Friction fir will keep them in. In the daytime they will just be...pillows

This is what I needed in my life. I've wanted to put a porthole window in my van because I'm doing City Life at the moment and I do not want a big window for someone to break into my vehicle. I do have a skylight which is very nice but I think I would also like a porthole window.

  • @vanlifebiker
    @vanlifebiker 3 года назад +1

Probably a proper name for that stuff but we call it edge guard in the electrical industry. We use it on big electrical boxes that have sharp edges to protect wires from getting cut or nicked. Good job & I may consider port holes in my build. I have no windows at all which I like for security reasons but the port holes offer security & light.

Nice work, when I put in my porthole windows they were a pain. I put a round piece of wood I found at Lowes. 11.75" x .5" for about $8-10 (don't remember) I used a bottom bearing trim router bit to make a round hole the same size as the window to make the trim ring.

I think they look pretty damn good. Especially the inside. It would be real easy to screw up the look of the inside, but you found something that made it look so good, that it looked like you planned it all out from the beginning like a professional. All you have to do now, is put the DCMV logo on the glass itself, via a sticker, or on the reflectix covers.

good you´re in the USA if you would live in here you should make notifications to the authorities and the insurance company EVERYTIME you make an implementation to the van, which actually is a nightmare due even you make those notifications in advance some of them cannot be complete for considering "not trusty enough" or compromising the security ....

The inner rings are reversible to fit thicker walls so no need to trim the inner insulation 🙃 therefore it would have not needed a trim ring I would just paint them black like the outside, totally destroyed my last name (the wife was in hysterics🤪) get some large shirts done🙃
