I wouldn't consider this a gateway game. It's quite abstract and might bore or confuse the players with the terminology such as priests and trades. beginner players are usually confuse with what is internal and external conflicts. If I remember correctly,I use to mention internal conflicts are created by placing a leader, external conflicts are created by placing a tile, when explaining the rules.
That's a great question. I just played it the other day, but before that I had not played it for several months. It's really nothing wrong with the game itself though. I tend to play a lot of different games, probably more than the average? Just guessing there. I think this has the potential to be a great crossover/gateway game if explained correctly. I highly reccomend this game either way.
My wife and I had a copy of this game for a couple of years now (it was basically a gift) and have not yet had the chance to play it. Partially because we play so many other games, but mostly because the rulebook seemed so daunting. We usually prefer to have a game taught to us by someone who knows what they are doing. This video makes the game look a lot easier than the rulebook seemed to. Gonna comb through it today and try it later on. Thanks
