2:55 Okay but can we just appreciate the SHIFT in Salem's demeanor here? Up to this point in the scene, Salem's acting all lofty and unshakable in a 'look upon me ye mortals and despair' mode, but after Ruby's calls her out the only response Salem has is an honestly rather PETTY dig at how she killed Ruby's mom. It really feels like Ruby actually NEEDLED Salem in this scene. Like she legitimately got under her skin and unsettled her, even for just a moment. Ruby actually made Salem FLINCH.
I love her optimism. You should update this for V8 if you get a chance. It'd be nice to see the "I hope it was worth it" line because goddamn was that epic.
Awesome video! I also love in Volume 2 when she asks Dr. Oobleck why he wanted to become a Huntsman instead of him having to ask her. It showed that she was pursuing this way of life for the right reasons, and got to hear his perspective as opposed to the rest of her team who had to explain their (at the time) faulty or incomplete reasonings. A quick moment, but definitely a meaningful one and one where I fell in love with her character even more!
I love it when ruby just makes these little epic speeches. Especially this one right here 2:38. It may not be one of my most favorite speech from her. But the way her face was being so expressive, her head bobbing around with each word she says really makes it feel real. And the way her eyes glimmer, chef kiss.
“Ruby Rose is a bad protagonist.” I think those who think that should watch all 8 volumes or rewatch some of these scenes to find out what makes her Ruby.
We've watched the show, dawg. We just critically deconstruct its merits. If you think lines of dialogue make a character a better protagonist than how they impact the story, do you. But don't act like we we're there from the beginning with you just because we care about other things. XD

It's a writers responsibility to come up with rationale behind the framing devices they use, so having one kid not know anything so that it gets explained to us is honestly expected, but they did nothing to frame it. Blake had the most emotional mundane story, (and by that, i mean, that in a fantasy story about saving people from soul-sucking monsters, racism, sexism or family drama, are a mundane issues) but then -- again -- the structural issues with this STORY reveal the cracks. Faunus racism has nothing to do with anything else in the story. People aren't racist against faunus because... They can't use dust, so humans have used that advantage over them for centuries. People aren't racist against faunus because.... Grimm don't attack them and so humans have a natural resentment and suspicion that they are related. People aren't racist because.... Well, they don't have any reason at all, do they? Faunus don't even have an origin in this world: the writers felt the best story for them was to just magically, inexplicably appear after Salem's fall. Monty, the only person of color in this entire production, made a catgirl because catgirls are cool. I bet he even liked the idea of her cat ears because it plays as a nice allegory to the Asian American experience (granted, look at how piss-poor the writing is that this gives Blake FOUR ears, but who cares if she has an illogical character design if it makes a season 1 plot twist make sense). But then the two guys who wrote the plot wanted to be Deep and Woke and tried their damn hardest to write about racism, but their understanding of racism is "people being haters for no reason". There are always reasons. Even if those reasons get muddled over time. And "reasons" doesn't mean the people did anything wrong. If Europeans are fully clothed and have an entire religion that shames them for undressing, then yes they're going to think that all of the other people of the world who wear loincloths are uncivilized. That's a reason. If Europeans are trying to make farms work in Georgia, Florida, Cuba, Colombia and Brazil, then they are going to resent that the only people strong enough to stand that level of heat are these Africans. Being racist because it makes you rich is a reason to be racist. I knew this story had absolutely no idea what it was talkin about about racism when Blake was resentful that faunus has had their own country. There is not an ethnic group in this world that resents having their own country, but if you use an American standpoint, an American is going to assume that since segregation is bad that there must be something bad with having your own country because you're segregated from the rest of the world. Nevermind the fact that every ethnic group comes from someplace. The entire world is not the United States. So ... Sorry for the rant, but to me the structural flaws of RWBY are so deep that none of them make sense as main characters. Jaune kinda feels like a MC because he doesn't know what's going on and Blake kinda feels like a MC because she Is going through a lot of angst, and Ruby kinda feels like the MC because she has the most actual connection to Salem... But all of them just... Fall apart so badly... Ruby doesn't even get to be a good "inspirational leader" main character because the writers didn't know that a key characteristic for "inspirational leader" types is their need to butt into other people's business. Luffy sees someone bullying his friends, it's his fight too. Steven Universe sees an upset friend, he's not going to stop bothering them until they talk about it. Captain America will put everything on the line to save his best friend. Usagi, Sakura, and Madoka will fight demons in cute dresses for their friends, no matter how scared they are. Ryuko is torn between her revenge mission and saving her friend. The Mighty Kamina believed in Simon when the boy didn't believe in himself. The writers genuinely don't understand that the point of a main character is "How does Ruby feel about Blake dealing with racism?" I'm sorry, does that sound selfish? Let's see: How does Harry Potter feel about elf slavery? He put his sock in a book and gave it to Malfoy, tricking him into setting Dobby free by giving him clothing. THAT'S a main character!

I was an OG RWBY fan who was confused and bemused when Mikes and Kerry immediately swerved from Ruby to Jaune in Volume 1. Sure, Shikamaru and Gaara both get arcs separate of Naruto, but the first season is a bit soon to swerve the story from the main character. Little did i know that it was because Miles and Kerry had absolutely no idea how to write Ruby so they subconsciously gravitated to the dumbest boy being the lead. And again, it never occurred to them to figure out why. Jaune's family don't have any high expectations on him. His family is boring and normal and Jaune picked up his grandfather's antiquated weapon from an old war and set off to make something of himself to escape comfortable mediocrity. WE just begin to layer and project onto him because we are accustomed to stories having framing and backstory. It's sad because all they had to do was keep the story light-hearted and these flaws wouldn't look so bad. You don't need a backstory to enjoy Bugs Bunny, Betty Bop, or Ken and Ryu. The characterization for Dragon Ball Z is some of the thinnest in anime, but DBZ knows that it's a fighting and comedy show and works within that space. RWBY largely just suffers from being written subconsciously, with no thought into WHY things are happening.

@@viviblue7277 I just think the hyper-focus on Team RWBY and their characters have been such a good idea. The fact that so many aspects of Volume 1/2 are important here (like for example, the scene where they're talking to their younger selves is a reflection of the talk they had back during Mount Glenn) really makes this show feel like it has weight. Ruby actually being weighed down by her failures to the point where she breaks, while painful, has been really well done. Plus, the action is some of the best we've had in some time! It's no Monty, but it's been really good, imo Honestly I think the show's lowest point was actually Volume 5, after that it's just been improvements.
@@SHSLRuby volume 5 was unfortunately the poi t when. They were pulled in several directions as an animation company, I closing Gen:Lock, Camp Camp, and I believe Nomad of Nowhere. It's unfortunate because all the plot points are there and they work, but the effort just wasn't put in to connect them. It's basically just a bunch of exposition and downtime then reveals for the sake of it without good build up. I'm fairly confident V5 is objectively REBYs low point, but even then the glimmers of what it was meant to be can still be seen. Blake's subplot conclusion is strong and Yang's confrontation at the end with her mother is still a heavy scene. I was happy to see them realize this and put more effort into the production of volume 6 onward. Drama behind the scenes aside, volume 7 and 8 are massive improvements from the shows humble begginings, and volume 9 really is a solid season, not just by RWBY standards, but as entertainment media in general; I hope it's a sign of what is to come in the future.
