- An amazing lightning storm passed over the GTA on August 24th, 2011. According to local reports, there were approximately 1,000 strikes every two minutes. Thanks to the research of Tom A. Warner, we now understand that our video is evidence not of downward strikes hitting CN Tower, but of upward lightning emanating from CN Tower. Generated most likely by preceding flash activity within the storm, the CN lightning is believed to be "lightning-triggered lightning".
Great video. I was watching it from Mississauga. There were 30,000 strikes in the Greater Toronto Area and 1.000 per minute the Southern Ontario. On my 57 years, have never seen anything so intense and so amazing. As I drove down the 401 south I saw two stokes to my left and one dead ahead at exactly the same time. Also never seen as many bolts that travelled from adjacent clouds rather than to the ground.
was it like hitting the CN Tower? Seems to me it was a lot of Ground to Cloud lightning. Nice shots
WHOA!!!! looks like you got one of the best views of all this lightning!! AMMAZZINGG
amazing video of the lightning storm last wednesday, this video definatly deserves more views, seen some with over 50 thousand that dont come anywhere near the footage in this video, great vid share this video as much as you can, everyone needs to see this
Such a beautiful lighting 😍
I remember this. I had gotten home 5-10 mins. before this storm started. It is very rare for Toronto to get these kinds of severe storms. They usually occur north, east and west of us but hardly ever in the city. I love thunderstorms (I turn into a kid on Christmas morning, lol), the more severe the better (as long as nobody gets killed), but this one scared the shit out of me.
Wow that is some good footage. Such an intense storm.
I remember being in Saratoga Springs, NY the night that system moved through. Being from Seattle where lightning is nearly nonexistent, it was cool to see not only plenty of loud lightning, but flash flooding as well.
I haven't seen this much lightning since back in 1988, when i was travelling by greyhound bus near the New Mexico-Texas border. It was such a light show that night! The rain was beautiful, the lightning was beautiful, and i wish i would have had a video camera with me back then.
I'm surprised you had power!!!
Excellent shots!! :D
Is there some kind of coil or something in toronto? It seems like most of the lightning is hitting one same spot in the middle of the city,
I'm pretty sure that I heard a tornado siren once in the video. I have NEVER seen any lighting BETTER than this! Best lighting storm, EVER!!!!!!
I noticed something behind the skyline seemed to 'launch' the majority of the lightning, particularly upward discharges.
Either way this is the kind of lightning I would love to see more often during Switzerland's hot summer days. ^^
i cant choose the best lightning because its all good. Great Job.
I found an article out of Toronto about this storm. A huge antenna on one of the buildings was acting as a lightning rod and creating the upward lightning.
BEST LIGHTNING VIDEO EVER SEEN! :O
Great job man! This is PURE ART!
It's really eerie to hear the traffic going by, seeing birds fly through the air and life moving on while those black clouds are silently moving in. GREAT VIDEO!! I definitely subscribed!! Was there rotation in those clouds?
wow incredible, so many hits in one area.. and clearly visible, amazing!
Is there really so hard lightnig, or are u cut this video?
all below cloud lightning goes upwards. there are little "feelers" that come up from everything and the lighting that we see is only formed when the charge connects with the "feelers" at ground level and boom!
WOW! This is a great video! i was at the top of my condo and it was all cloudy and raining so i didnt get good pictures :(
Absolutely brilliant footage.would love to have been there to see that.
Just wondering. WHY does all this lightning seem to be striking in the same place?
Incredible! Thanks for sharing.
nice... is that lightning seriously going into the sky, cause it looks like it
i'll never forget this night... very cool
1000 over 2 minutes? local reports are wrong, that's 8 strikes to the ground every second...that's continuous lightning to the point you have solid light for 2 minutes
A lot of people are asking why the tower is getting repeatedly struck. The lightning is emanating FROM the tower - UPWARDS lightning, in other words. Awesome!
Damn. Great captures and epic video. :3
This kind of thunderstorm doesnt strike very often but when it strikes, it strikes hard, as you can see here :D The kind of TS i love the most :)
I was on highway 8 then the 401 to 24 when this was going on, very close to where the tornado first touched down. It was so intense I didn't know if I was more scared of the lightening or getting blown of the highway or just losing sight of the road.
very cool , I was on my moms balcony damn your video is good !!!!!!
I would like to make a comment on this vid. First of all .. great video! Almost all lightning seems to come from one point.. Just behind the appartmentbuilding with the green letters.. There is somethere triggering these lightnings..
Indeed, that one's my favorite!
why are they upward????
I was in a plane during all this up there with the lightning. it was really cool seeing the lightning up there though:P
Cool video but hey, wheres the thunder?
How come you can't hear any thunder?
you have some realy nice lightnning strikes in there man. I love this video, awesome dude! Keep up the good works. My personal favorite : 1:43..
It's really eerie to hear the traffic going by, seeing birds fly through the air and life moving on while those black clouds are silently moving in. GREAT VIDEO!! I definitely subscribed!! Was there rotation in those clouds?
great upward lightnings!!
That night we were working at the base of the CN tower drilling across from the steam whitsle brewery! we had the best seats for that storm!
Why are all the bolts hitting in one area?
Wow, great footage. The sky in my area was white all the time. Too much lightning! Haha
wicked! i wish we got storms like that here...
Looks like you actually caught on video some upward lightning.
1:13 Did that lightning do a freakin loop??
We had a lightning storm last night, it was amazing :D
Put foam over the camera's microphone to reduce windnoise!
How can the CN Tower survive this?
i've seen alot lightning storms in texas, but nothing as cool as this. i'm jealous.
It's cool to watch this when there's also a thunderstorm outside your house.
badass footage
Beautiful
I watched this very closely, and almost all of it seems to be upward lightning. It's amazing and beautiful. It's natural beauties like these that will never cease to amaze me.
Damn, there's too much lightning for even Voldemort to maniacally laugh to...
A very powerful electrical storm
must have been a loud time for those near the CN tower :-/ ... holy moly !
@JockooAssman there was very little thunder surprisingly....just one big light show display...it really was like that!
How?
i was in the tall building in the far right and the elavators were broken and there we tornado warnings and severe thunder like it was scary even we were watching a movie and had ear guards on
Toronto: Lightning hits power line. New York City: Where the hell is that light coming from?!
very cool lightning
Wow amazing!
I couldn't see that well from my apart!! WOW!!!!
Best Lightning ive seen :}
This was a Tornadic storm. We have had these storms and even touch downs in Toronto now for the past three years in a row... this is serious and it's only a matter of time before we see a devastating touch down in toronto...
It cant record the low frequencies, "
the thunder sounds like paper"
Weird it keeps striking the same area......
omg i wish i could see lightning bolts like that with my own eyes!
was an hours drive away east and it wasn't nearly as intense as this
I remember it went on for 3 nights in 2011 some time in the summer after that I could hear the birds chirping at 3:30am..
Damn, I wish I could have been there to see that!
did you see that it starts all at the same exact spot
put your mouse arrow on it
I remember that big storm
I remember that well. I was in basement flat in Cabbagetown.
0:19 ground to cloud lightning really rare
Too bad we couldn't hear the rumble after it striked
I wonder why that part of the city caused upward lightning. Amazing video. Absolutely amazing.
1:29 the sickest of all!!!
CN Tower has a massive lightning rod on top of it, watch closely....you will see it start from the tower and go upwards instead.....aka GC lightning.....
I didn't know thunder could sound like paper being shacked.
1 in a million bolts are called superbolts and are 100 times brighter than normal lightning.
Absoluteley shoking
UHH cant believe this was on my Birthday
It even looks like upward lightning sometimes ;)
The one at 1:46 was just WOW
The CN tower kind of acts in the same way as when scientists launch small rockets to initiate a lightning flash.
1:29 is sick
if u get hit by that thunder hmmm mmmm you'll get a super power "im not saying the flash" lmao im silly
Damn that's crazy I'm so scared of lightning :(
No, it's Cole super charged.
sounds like a scary time
I love them
@rkpearce dude Zeus a greek god. Hellenics bielevve in Zeus. Christians and/or other single god religions believe in "god". So I am confused here on your comment. But adding to that this vid is awesome and I am really curios on the christian explanation of lightning cuz no matter how hard I search I can't find it lol.
Lots of CGs. Lots of return strokes
...
...
HOLY CRAP.
Pretty sure that's wind dude
That was on my birthday. And that's awesome lightening as well. Please check out some of my storm videos.
there was thunder and clouds it was just very silent
if u look where it hits, it hits the same place all the time d;
Ssssooooooo awesome and lucky I want to have tht kind of lighting storm here XD
