  • An amazing lightning storm passed over the GTA on August 24th, 2011. According to local reports, there were approximately 1,000 strikes every two minutes. Thanks to the research of Tom A. Warner, we now understand that our video is evidence not of downward strikes hitting CN Tower, but of upward lightning emanating from CN Tower. Generated most likely by preceding flash activity within the storm, the CN lightning is believed to be "lightning-triggered lightning".

Great video. I was watching it from Mississauga. There were 30,000 strikes in the Greater Toronto Area and 1.000 per minute the Southern Ontario. On my 57 years, have never seen anything so intense and so amazing. As I drove down the 401 south I saw two stokes to my left and one dead ahead at exactly the same time. Also never seen as many bolts that travelled from adjacent clouds rather than to the ground.

was it like hitting the CN Tower? Seems to me it was a lot of Ground to Cloud lightning. Nice shots

I remember this. I had gotten home 5-10 mins. before this storm started. It is very rare for Toronto to get these kinds of severe storms. They usually occur north, east and west of us but hardly ever in the city. I love thunderstorms (I turn into a kid on Christmas morning, lol), the more severe the better (as long as nobody gets killed), but this one scared the shit out of me.

I remember being in Saratoga Springs, NY the night that system moved through. Being from Seattle where lightning is nearly nonexistent, it was cool to see not only plenty of loud lightning, but flash flooding as well.

I haven't seen this much lightning since back in 1988, when i was travelling by greyhound bus near the New Mexico-Texas border. It was such a light show that night! The rain was beautiful, the lightning was beautiful, and i wish i would have had a video camera with me back then.

Is there some kind of coil or something in toronto? It seems like most of the lightning is hitting one same spot in the middle of the city,

I'm pretty sure that I heard a tornado siren once in the video. I have NEVER seen any lighting BETTER than this! Best lighting storm, EVER!!!!!!

I noticed something behind the skyline seemed to 'launch' the majority of the lightning, particularly upward discharges.
Either way this is the kind of lightning I would love to see more often during Switzerland's hot summer days. ^^

I found an article out of Toronto about this storm. A huge antenna on one of the buildings was acting as a lightning rod and creating the upward lightning.

all below cloud lightning goes upwards. there are little "feelers" that come up from everything and the lighting that we see is only formed when the charge connects with the "feelers" at ground level and boom!

1000 over 2 minutes? local reports are wrong, that's 8 strikes to the ground every second...that's continuous lightning to the point you have solid light for 2 minutes

A lot of people are asking why the tower is getting repeatedly struck. The lightning is emanating FROM the tower - UPWARDS lightning, in other words. Awesome!

I was on highway 8 then the 401 to 24 when this was going on, very close to where the tornado first touched down. It was so intense I didn't know if I was more scared of the lightening or getting blown of the highway or just losing sight of the road.
