Absolutely stunning storm video! I really enjoyed this. I'm from Ontario where we used to get storms like this, but have lived in BC now for over 20 years where we get probably 2 or 3 storms per year, and I really miss storms like these, so I'm living vicariously through your video. Thanks for posting!
This is a memory I will never forget. I've lived in Lakewood for 21 years and have never seen lightning like that before that night. I mean there was no pause between the flashes for a good hour. And even then I was bummed when it stopped :-(
Well, here's a little more from Denver last summer. I am fairly close to Lakewood, but the footage was taken from my 12th floor window in the evening. See any tornadoes in this lightning storm from last summer here in Denver? The storm was over the mountains & it was in the evening. I couldn't tell. This was a great one. I had forgotten about my recording of it and then while I was watching it a number of other people's showed up too. It was a great storm. We are in Idaho now and don't get storms like that. I miss them!
At about 0:26 seconds in there is some strange thunder like its broken or something, I heard this during a storm the other day, would you know what causes that because I have never heard that before ?
It happens because cloud to cloud lighting bolts overhead may travel for miles but not in a straight line so the sound gets to you at different times. If the bolt turns toward or away from you at close to 90 degrees, it can create gaps and overlap in the sound because the bolt itself travels so much faster than the speed of sound.
It was pouring and it was real windy and you know the Sky wouldn't stop flashing! I hope this can happen in Houston another time cuz I just think it's so awesome!!

daemn42 I guess where they have something similar or more is in the deserts of Sahara. I happenned to be in Jeddah Saudi Arabia one time. Hard to say, because it started after dark, and I wasn't watching the radar. It moved pretty fast from just above the mountains near where I live out to the east over the plains, so I don't think it was a supercell (which usually form over the plains). The lightning held up the pace you see in the video for about 30 minutes.

The spot I choose is the back edge of a parking deck that juts out from the side of a 10 story tall hotel that gets wider as it goes up (overhangs) so it blocks a lot of rain and wind. I figure the closest lightning would hit the top of the building or one of the light poles on the other side of the deck. Just about anywhere, from inside your car, is reasonably safe.
It's an internal lens reflection. The bolt of lightning is pretty close but almost directly overhead, just out of frame, and that is caught by the front lens element and reflected into the forward view and appearing abnormally close. Happens in many other short lightning videos, where some people will mistakenly claim that the bolt was as close as it looks.

Thanks. No fog, just moderately heavy rain for a while. Stock microphones on the Canon SX-30IS camera, which were way better than the mics on later generations of the same camera. Wind blocked by the building at my back so didn't need screens over the mics, and building helps intensify the sound a bit as well. Other advantage of old SX30 was a CCD sensor so no rolling shutter artifacts which are common in most current lightning videos shot with CMOS sensor cameras.

Awesome video!! How long did the storm last and did the lightning scare you at all? I love thunderstorms....I used to live in Colorado Springs and I remember the storms we had while living there but now I live in LA and get hardly any thunderstorms at all....maybe I need to move back!
+C Evans (littleartichoke1) Very intense lightning (pace of what you see at the beginning) for about 25-30 minutes, then tapered off for next 15-20 minutes as storm moved off to the east of me. Not scared of lightning where I was at as I figure it would hit the top of the building I'm standing near first. Colorado is 2nd in the nation for lightning, behind Florida (which is first in the world).
I remember watching that storm from the kitchen window of my house I wasn’t videotaping lightning that year Three years before I started videotaping my thunderstorms
Which would you rather have tornado, lightning, thunder, rain wind, hail, thunderclap siren I love it all, but I know tornadoes very destructive weather. They’re beautiful. Would you have the supercell thunderstorm? I don’t know how many types of thunderstorms there are, but I know there’s a lot of them. Some don’t produce tornadoes. Here it happens during the spring and summertime depending on where you are, I’m from Badgerland
+Brian Bruno No, I was outside. There's a 7-8 story tall building that is wider at the top than the the bottom, which blocks the rain, especially when the storm is coming in from the other side of the building.
Cool Vid-Thanks for Posting, Miss those great Summer Boomers..I lived in Castle Rock and experienced what I thought were the most violent lightning storms ever...Wind wise they are still the worst, but for overall Violence, amount of Strikes and water...That would be Ajijic, Mexico in Jalisco State on the Shore of Lake Chapala..lived there for a year and the lightning there is surreal. People are killed daily and yet they still walk the lake shore during the storm like it's no big deal...found that a bit hard to believe unjtil i witnessed it...lived on the lake front.
MSMTK I actually saw a storm like this once in San Jose. Folks kept telling me "It never does this here". They also told me it never snows there, but I saw snow on all the surrounding low hills once while there on a different trip. Guess the interesting weather just follows me around. ;)
Billy baggins The camera is on a tiny little tripod and the head was a little loose, so it tilted down by itself at that moment and showed the concrete table it was sitting on. Kept it in the video because I still wanted to capture the thunderclap.
The dynamic range is too high to do it any other way. I have good quality audio recorder which I've tried to use for other lightning storms, and if I turn off AGC and adjust the level down enough to avoid clipping on closer thunder, then much of the mid/distant thunder is lost. Turn the level up a little, and the closer thunder is ruined with clipping.
Odd.. I don't imagine lower volume information getting lost that easily, especially if the recorder is set at a high sample rate such as 24-bit. If the resulting dynamic range is way too much for youtubes 16-bit audio however which I doubt, then I'd recommend some normalization then mild fast-attack compression, to have a bit of a balance.
This is one of the most incredible lightning videos I've ever seen. I've easily watched it 50 times. Amazing display of Mother Nature.
This is amazing, I remember watching this video like 10 years ago, no clue how many times I have lol always love uploading storm videos!

+Brian Bruno No, I was outside. There's a 7-8 story tall building that is wider at the top than the the bottom, which blocks the rain, especially when the storm is coming in from the other side of the building.
Fantastic.
love this...
Every Time There Was A thunder Storm In Denver Those Were The nights I Had Better Sleep!
Wish we had storms like this in CA we barely get anything at all.
MSMTK I actually saw a storm like this once in San Jose. Folks kept telling me "It never does this here". They also told me it never snows there, but I saw snow on all the surrounding low hills once while there on a different trip. Guess the interesting weather just follows me around. ;)
daemn42 Do you think you can edit the background sounds out like the ambulance and some weird groaning out?
daemn42 What is THAT at 0:07.
Billy baggins The camera is on a tiny little tripod and the head was a little loose, so it tilted down by itself at that moment and showed the concrete table it was sitting on. Kept it in the video because I still wanted to capture the thunderclap.
daemn42 can you play video games during a storm like this or no?
Great video.
THE TITLE SAYS IT ALL!!!!
one thunder behind the other ,COOL
Where did you stand?? For what I got, you were outside, at the board of a sidewalk 👀 ain't it?
I remember this storm and I have footage too. It was bizarre.
where is lakewood
Lakewood, Colorado, USA
its a shame that the audio has been hindered by the cameras Auto Gain Control
